Hey,
Back again here with another classic for ya. This time around, we've got the friendly Aussie, the man from Humpty-Doo Australia, Outback Jack.
Back in the early 80's, Crocodile Dundee was a huge movie hit, so I guess Vince thought he would try and capitalize on that and make his own version of Mick Dundee, in Outback Jack.
I can't really recall if he was over well with fans or not. I've got tons of old W.W.F. Coliseum Video tapes, but I don't think I've got one Outback Jack match.
However, when Outback Jack would make his way down to ringside, he entered to his catchy "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" theme song, which is probably one of the worst themes in history.
His finisher was probably even worse than his entrance theme and I didn't think that was possible, but I guess it is. It was called "The Boomerrang".
For those that don't know, he would stun his opponent in a standing position. Then, he would bounce off the ropes and deliver a clothesline to the back of his opponent's head, knocking them forward. Then, he would bounce off the opposite ropes while his opponent was still reeling from the first clothesline and deliver another, knocking them down and out.
He wasn't the best wrestler around, that's for sure. However, I'll give him a bit of credit and say he wasn't the worst either. He was ok at best.
Here's a clip of him taking on Steve Lombardi, which I believe is his debut in the World Wrestling Federation:
Even though his tenure in the W.W.F. wasn't long, Outback Jack had his own W.W.F. LJN action figure and t-shirt. That's alot more than some other wrestlers can say, that's for sure. Matter of fact, I still have his action figure MOC in my collection and to be honest, it's one of my favorites.
Some guys NEVER get their own action figure, let alone t-shirt, so I guess they had high hopes for Outback, but he didn't really deliver the goods in the end.
I believe he was seriously injured in a match against Killer Khan where he eventually lost the sight in one of his eyes and now wears an eye-patch. He must wear the eye-patch so his equilibrium doesn't get messed up.
He is long retired now and still makes rare appearances at autograph sessions.
I believe Jakks even contacted him for a figure in the WWE Classic series, but it must've been cancelled because it was never released to my knowledge. I wonder if Outback Jack even made it to the prototype stage. Only Jeremy knows for sure. Someone should contact him and find out.
I don't believe Outback Jack ever wrestled on a pay-per-view and there was probably good reason for it, but he was still good enough to have a run in the World Wrestling Federation. Some guys never get that chance in their career, but Outback Jack can say he was there and he enjoyed his time in the sun.
There you have it. Another "Blast From The Past" in the books. Share your thoughts & memories on Outback Jack right here!! Thanks.
