To let the air out of the packaging. With their package shape, the box would fil with air and break easily.

Isn't it because of the type of plastic used on the figures?

Come on guys has nobody seen Toy Story? It's so the figures/toys can breath. LOL !!! Nah, I am sure it's to keep the packaging from coming off the card due to air pressure also easier to package in the case boxes than packages with air that would take p more space.

My only guess would be that it somehow adds to the longevity of the figure if you plan to never open it - something for the collectors? I dunno. At first I thought it had something to do with preventing moisture from building in the package, but I've never seen an unopened fig with moisture inside, so who knows...

if you take a look on the side of the packaging there are 5 holes on each side. does anyone know if there is a purpose for them? Mattel does this with all of it's figures intended for children. It's a safety issue with the paint and fume containment. In their early batman release figures, they were recalled because of this. The later contained holes. As you recall Mattel had issues with paint and China. The box being crushed thing I hope was a joke.

To let the air out of the packaging. With their package shape, the box would fil with air and break easily. This was a joke, right? As stated above the holes are for venting. In a Q/A with Mattel last year, they stated the purpose of holes is the cut down on any possible fumes that have to do with the paint and plastic. After the recall on many Mattel prodcuts in late 2007 ("The Batman" and some of the Fisher-Price line) they decided to take extra caution with every aspect of their product. So even though there is probaly no harm in the fumes from the paint/plastic, with the venting there is less of chance of anyone claiming the "fumes" harmed them.

the figs are so lifelike that they need air or they'll die.
