Cheick Kongo vs. Paul Buentello Set for March 21 at UFC on Versus 1
by Dann Stupp on Jan 18, 2010 at 2:35 pm ET
A heavyweight bout that could have the octagon rocking is set now that strikers Cheick Kongo (14-6-1 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Paul Buentello (27-11 MMA, 3-2 UFC) are signed to meet at UFC on Versus 1.
The Versus-televised event is set for March 21 at The Odeum Colorado in Broomfield (near Denver) with a headliner of Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera.
Kongo and Buentello are part of the night's televised main card.
Buentello, who recently returned to the UFC after a run with rival Strikeforce and Affliction Entertainment, dropped a majority decision to Stefan Struve in December. The closely contested UFC 107 loss snapped the fighter's two-fight win streak, and it was just his second loss in his past eight fights.
Buentello, in fact, is 12-3 since August 2001, and the lone losses came to then-champ Andrei Arlovski, Alistair Overeem (for the vacant Strikeforce heavyweight belt) and Struve.
The former top UFC heavyweight contender now meets Kongo, who was on the verge of a UFC title shot (after three TKO wins over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk and Antoni Hardonk) before his recent back-to-back losses to Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir. A noted French srtiker, Kongo again was penalized for a lacking ground game when he suffered the submission loss to Mir at UFC 107. Kongo refused to tap and went out cold before the referee halted the bout.
The latest UFC on Versus 1 card now includes:
MAIN CARD
Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera
Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Paul Buentello vs. Cheick Kongo
John Howard vs. Anthony Johnson
Shannon Gugerty vs. Clay Guida
PRELIMINARY CARD
Eliot Marshall vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
Spencer Fisher vs. Duane Ludwig
James Irvin vs. Alessio Sakara
Chase Gormley vs. Brendan Schaub
I will once again emphasize how much I HATE DirecTV right now.
