Yesturday I decided to pick up the Elite series 1 Undertaker figure and opened it from its package. I wanted to see the details for myself and compare it to older Undertaker figures from the Jakks line. I will say that the figure itself is very well made but as for the accessory parts (Hat, Trench + Elbow pad) I was highly disappointed.
First off the Trench is what really ticked me off. The material they used for it does not work well for this type of figure. I remember a WCW black and white painted Sting figure that was released by Toybiz back in 98' that had an actual leather trench and included a bat accessory with Hollywood hogan. It was a 2 pack that was well detailed and I paid much less for it at the time than I did with this recent Taker release which reached almost $20 after tax at TRU. The trench on this figure does not allow for mobility while its on the him and I can see that it was more made for display purposes. However if I had to pay so much for the figure why couldn't Mattel just use real leather or some other realistic material to make it feel like a real leather trench?
Now on to the elbow pad, again another piece that prevents mobility of the figure. The pad acts more like a cast for a broken arm than a elbow pad. For an elite figure I'd expect better material. We should be able to bend the arms of the figures even when the elbow pads are equipted.
The Hat could've been made better also. In comparing these accessories to jakks version I have to say that Jakks did a way better job in executing them than Mattel. The Undertaker hats for the Jakks figures fit well on the figure and dont need to be glued on to stay on. I also prefer the Trench on the Jakks Undertakers that were partially made of sculpt at the sleeves and a rubber base. Although the trench could not be fully removed on those figures you were still able to pose them as you wanted to.
Again the Elite figure itself is well done it is just not worth the 20 bucks if you asked me. Hopefully in a later version they will use better materials to pull off the Undertaker as he was meant to be. And thats my review. I would like to read anyones opinion of it because I know that I cant be the only one who feels this way about this expensive figure.
