Hey, I am back once again to feature another old-school "Blast From The Past" and this time I have chosen the one and only, Waylon Mercy. Waylon Mercy arrived in the World Wrestling Federation back in 1995 and his tenure wasn't a long one. He of course, was "The Golden Boy" Dan Spivey, but had since dyed his once blonde hair to jet-black to play the character of Waylon Mercy. Personally, I loved the character. It was so creepy, I thought. I only wish he would've lasted longer, that's all. The Waylon Mercy character was based off of Robert DeNiro's character of Max Cady in Cape Fear, for those that did not know. Prior to entering the WWF as Waylon Mercy, they began to air several vignettes to hype him up and they were great. When he made his way to ringside, he greeted and shook hands with the fans and then even wished his opponent luck and shook his hand and shook hands with the referee as well. His entrance theme was great too: I don't believe he was around long enough to have any sort of major feud with anyone. Here is his debut match against Bill Weaver: He also had a match with Savio Vega at one of the old In Your House events. In a match against Bret "The Hitman" Hart: Also had a match with "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel on an episode of WWF Superstars. He ended up leaving the WWF due to injuries and eventually retired. I mean, Waylon Mercy was like 6'8 and his kness were in bad shape due to the numerous bumps and bruises over the years. To my knowledge, Danny Spivey NEVER had a single action figure in his likeness, which is a shame because he definitely deserved one. Especially in the Waylon Mercy gimmick. Jakks really missed the boat on that one. If there was anyone to sign to a deal, there's no question I would have included Dan Spivey for sure!! If there is one gimmick I have ALWAYS liked and still like to this day, it's Waylon Mercy. It's a shame he was plagued with injuries and pretty much forced to retire. I would have loved to see him as the WWF Heavyweight champion, even if it were a short reign. It would have been great. He also did a shoot interview with RF Video: On July 14th, 2007 he was arrested for driving under the influence in Odessa, Florida. Here is his mug-shot: Wether he was Dan Spivey or Waylon Mercy, he was a tremendous, under-rated wrestler. And there you have it. Another "Blast From The Past" is in the books. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and memories on Waylon Mercy.

I liked the Mercy gimmick, too bad his career was cut short. I really enjoyed him as Dangerous Dan Spivey and as one half of the Sky Scrapers. He was not World Title material, but would have made a fine US Champion.

I think Spivey was gone before the character of Mercy could really take shape. I remember being kind of confused as to what he was supposed to be.

He was not World Title material, but would have made a fine US Champion. Let me get this straight here. As many years as Waylon Mercy had been wrestling up until that point and trust me, there were MANY, and he was a great wrestler and certainly one of the most under-rated big men of all-time. And yet, you say he wasn't World title material and yet this rookie named Sheamus who hasn't been wrestling nearly as long as Spivey has, is the WWE champ. I'm just a bit confused as to what classifies anyone to be World title material. I mean, if this rookie Sheamus is World title material, then surely Waylon Mercy should have been as well. I just hate knowing the fact that these new guys like Cena, Batista, and Sheamus got to be WWE/World champ and other, BETTER past wrestlers like "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, The British Bulldog, and Mr. Perfect did not. Makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever.

Makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever. So let's just give the World Title to everyone then. Spivey came up in a different era & he is far from being in the same class as some of the greats that never held the WWF or NWA World Title (DiBiase, Jake Roberts, Junk Yard Dog (yeah I said it), Roddy Piper, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, Wahoo McDaniel, Dick Murdoch, Magnum TA, Jimmy Snuka, Kevin Von Erich, Greg Valentine, Mr Wonderful, Stan Hansen, Michael Hayes, Arn Anderson, Dr. Death, Don Muraco, John Studd, Jim Duggan, Terry Gordy, Bruiser Brody, Eddie Gilbert). All the guys I listed above were Spivey's peers at one time or the other and all of them were uncrowned World Champions. Spivey does not belong in that group. The World Championships of today can not be compared to the ones of the past. The World Titles do not carry the prestige that they once had. I have said it once and I'll say it again the fact that greats like Roddy Piper & Ted DiBiase never held a World Title makes the World Title mean more. If Dan Spivey would have ever held the NWA, or WWF World Title he would have automatically been the worst NWA World Champ of that era, and if he were to have won the WWF Title he would have been the worst WWF Champ in WWF History prior to the Attitude Era. Spivey was good, but should not be mentioned as on of the all time greats or as one of the most underrated stars of all time, or even of his era. Creme rises to the top, Spivey never did. I have nothing against you and I love these threads you do, but how can you say that Billy Jack (who was way over and successful until the end of his WWF run) toiled in the midcard, when "toiling in the mid-card" should be the title to a biography on Dan Spivey.

Regardless if that person is ready for that main-event World title spot or not. The title obviously doesn't have the meaning it once had if guys like Batista, Cena and this new rookie Sheamus are holding it. I'm still sticking with my opinion though. If this rookie Sheamus who hasn't put in nearly the time or effort Spivey has, can be WWE champ, then Waylon Mercy should have been as well. Even if it were a short reign. I'm sorry man, but having a rookie be the current WWE champ takes ALOT away from the belt and it disgusts me to no end that they gave him the belt over Mr. Perfect. You tell me who you'd rather have seen as WWF/E champ. This new rookie or someone that actually paid his dues and was actually a hell of a wrestler? Yeah, I'll take the latter of the two. End of story.

End of story. I understand what your saying, but comparing the era that Spivey competed in and the Champions that reigned during that era, with today's product that took word wrestling out of it's name. Did you see the preview for HBK's new dvd, they wrote something like "HBK is one of the greatest and most charismatic performers in all of entertainment" I find that more offensive than a rookie holding the world title. The world title is a prop nowadays. The fact that HBK has not held a World Title since 2002 but Edge & Orton have are on pace to have held the Titles ten times each within the next year, makes the title mean even less than Sheamus holding it. Credibility and the WWF/E & World Titles are no longer synonymous. In Spivey's time they were.

^ I agree, and I think that it's because there are so many belts nowadays. They should fuse the IC/US titled and the World Titles and have universal champions that go between shows.

I do think 2 World Champions and the US & IC Titles being in the same promotion are too much, but even if they were to fuse the titles, they would still try to keep them around the waist of younger talent instead of on the best talent. HBK should have had at least a couple lengthy runs with a World Title since 2002. Randy Orton and Edge should not be nearing 10 world title runs, and Flair should have been given a last big run as Champion. I don't understand WWE's hard on for having the belt on young guys just for the sake of doing it.

Waylon Mercy had his brief run while I was rather young, and I remember just being frightened by him. Looking back I think his character was just ahead of it's time, and his theme music is just purely amazing.

I've been a fan of Spivey for a long time, and I think the Waylon Mercy gimmick could have been really big had he not been forced to retire.
Oh well, great memories all the same.

I remember Mercy vaguely, and actually wondering if his gimmick was based off of Max Cady...Guess I was right...

The Waylon Mercy character was YEARS ahead of its time. If it would have debuted a year or two ago, off the heels of the Dark Knight where the Joker had the same kind of 'crazy-yet-sensical' demeanor, I have a feeling the character would have been a major success. Unfortunately, and I know it was based on DeNiro's Cape Fear character, but it was introduced in a time where the characters were over-the-top and kid-friendly. Too bad because Spivey deserved better.
