I know a lot of people didn't like Ole Anderson, but I was always a fan. I still consider his incarnation of the Horsemen to be the best. I know he was pretty much over the hill by the time the Horsemen were in their prime, but Ole was always hilarious to me, and he looked like he smelled like Whiskey.
His screen print t-shirts that said things like "Damn I'm Good" were amazing. I know I'm in the minority, but damn I loved Ole.

I love Ole. Sure, he's a grumpy old man, but I'm a grumpy old man and I'm only in my 30's. I can't imagine how grumpy I'll be when I'm his age.
The best thing about Ole was that his character was so damn mean. Flair's over-the-top flamboyance was completely balanced out by the fact that the other Horsemen would beat the stuffing out of you anywhere. Ole in particular was outright vicious. (As an aside, I think that's why so many old school fans like Orton -- modern WWE villains tend to be goofy manipulators not ruthless badasses, and Orton has that old-school heel meanness). Before the Horsemen, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew had that same tough, take-no-prisoners style.
Sadly, as a kid, when Lex stepped in, his physique and image made me think of him as an upgrade, but over time, I realized that Ole's viciousness was the heart of the Horsemen. Through the various incarnations of the Horsemen, that spirit was increasingly gone. Even the Windham Horsemen, who many regard as the best, were missing that for me, as I never thought of Windham as having that real heel meanness.

I'm with you, TRW, as I liked the original incarnation of the Horsemen the best. The WWE produced DVD I thought was very well done, as it took me back to the days when wrestling was (for me) must-watch programming.
Ole to me truly epitomised the toughness of the Horsemen, and would stake his claim with vicious yet controlled promos, balanced with brutal in-ring work which at times was quite scientific. Of course out of Ole and Arn, Arn's one of my favourites of all time, but Ole was definitely a great fit in the Horsemen, and the toughest, no doubt.
I agree with magnum, and I too may be in the minority, but I didn't really enjoy the Windham Horsemen, as something about Windham just didn't sit right with me. Luger was less than impressive as well, as to me he didn't have anything besides a look going for him.

Man, I love that Horsemen DVD. I could watch it over and over. It takes me back to the foundations of why I love wrestling.
I love Windham, I just thought he didn't have it as a heel. He was a classic 80's face who they turned to make room for Lex as a main event face. I actually thought Lex worked pretty well as the young muscle for the veteran faction. His career would have benefited from him staying in that role for a while and learning the ropes from Flair, Arn, and Tully. Plus, Lex did provide that "oomph" when fighting powerful guys like the Road Warriors and the Russians. In the era of kayfabe, looking like you could get it done did matter.
Back to Ole and his t-shirts, I marked out when Ralph made the "Damn I'm Good" t-shirt for figures. I had to order one for my custom Ole. Ole is actually one of my most wanted figures for the Jakks NWA Legends of the Ring Line. I hope they can make it happen.

Ole just hit me as a legit bad ass. If you messed up in the ring he would stiff the hell outta you and then beat your ass in the locker room and probably whip it in the parking lot, restaurant and hotel before finally letting you go to sleep.

It sounds sadistic, but I liked the way Ole would make guys ugly. He did it to Steamboat, Piper & Ricky Morton. In each case, they had their face grounded into the concrete & they bladed. During the commercial break, Ole would take them backstage, rub their face with sandpaper, smack them around & put a stinging ointment on it to make it look good. Roddy Piper talks about his experience in his book.
I thought he was too old to be a horseman, but he did seem like a genuine bad ass.

But yeah, his no-nonsense style was great, and I never thought about it, but Orton has sort of embraced that. The Anderons just had that look and attitude that said I am going to kick your ass, make you look stupid, and go drink a beer.
I always felt the Horsement were never quite the same without Ole. I liked the Luger (I didn't really realize how green he was at the time) Horsemen, and Windham, but the original is by far the best to me.

Again, with you there TRW, I can appreciate what Luger and Windham brought to the table, but in my mind the original was by far the best. They made their opponents look good, and of course as wrestling goes, would have strength in numbers on their side for payback later...The best stable ever, IMO. |

I'm a huge Horsemen fan and the version that featured Flair, Tully, Arn & Ole to me is still the standard. I also loved the Luger era Horsemen and I'm not afraid to admit that I loved the Sid version.
The only Horsemen groupings that I was not too keen on were the one's with Roma, McMichael.
Ole was tough and I loved watching him destroy jobbers. It was a work of art.

Ole is a prick. He was also a very talented worker and interview at one time. I'd be a huge fan of his to this day if it wasn't for how negative he is. That really hurts my view of people a lot of times. I mean, anyone will get angry sometimes, but this man just seems to always be that way. It doesn't stop me from enjoying his work, but that is always in the back of my head when I watch it.
But since this turned into a bit of a Horsemen discussion, I'll say this. The Windham years were definitely my favorite. Granted, he didn't play a great heel until a couple years later. But he did it well enough, and was such a fantastic wrestler, it really helped their image of being the best of the best. One of the most underrated of all time in my opinion.

Sucks he became such a bitter old prick, because I think he could've done a lot for WWE backstage and would've loved to seen him on the Horsemen DVD.
As for Mongo, IMO he fit in the Horsemen, he was what the Horsemen were all about, a celebrated athlete with Charisma

I think he really did fit the Horsemen mold, more so than Malenko who I think was totally bland. I did not hate Mongo, I do now but that has nothing to do with his Horsemen days, but more so for the 20 times I hear his voice on my radio promoting amature night at Black Jack's Gentleman's club hosted by him every Tuesday. Seriously hearing Mongo say "champaign room" boils my blood. |

Mongo > Paul Roma by a mile and a half. I'll say that much. lol
As for Ole. I'll have to go with the general consensus here and agree the 1st incarnation got it perfect. You just can't top Flair talking **** for 15 minutes, only to have a literal pack of wolves attack whomever he provoked, and Ole fit that bill so perfectly.
