I watching History of the World's Heavyweight Championship video and was amazed with the Goldberg/Hollywood Hogan match. First off, they packed the Georgia Dome that night. Secondly, the fans were so in to the match, it was totally awesome. And after Goldberg won, the freaking place erupted.
Made me think: Did people really love Goldberg that much back in the day? Why didn't his run in the WWE become successful. I mean, even Heenan said during the match that Hogan was the most successful, popular wrestler of all time; he then said, Goldberg will one day become the biggest star of all time (I'm paraphrasing but that's the crux of it).
On a personal note, I was more of a WWF fan at the time. I viewed Goldberg as being a Stone Cold Steve Austin rip-off. Maybe I didn't give him his due.

Goldberg and Austin had very similar looks, but they were totally different characters. The end of Goldberg's WCW run was horrible and he was starting to come off ridiculously. His WWE run went bad because he was poorly booked after his debut.

By the time Goldberg came around, I had been watching wrestling for 20 years, and I loved him even before they really started pushing him. He was legit over with a lot of fans. His run wasn't successful in WWE because Vince didn't book him the same. He definitely watered down his character. Plus a lot of WWF/E fans had already decided they didn't like Goldberg before he even got there. At the time, I never understood the whole Stone Cold rip-off thing. Their characters were nothing alike. They were just bald white guys with goatees and black trunks. That's pretty much all they had in common. Their characters and style were completely different. |

The match was more about atmosphere than anything else as I remember, and was amazing to hear the eruption from the crowd when Goldberg pinned Hogan.
Unfortunately Goldberg came in too late to the WWE, as his run was booked quite poorly, even though he had better (longer) matches against some big names.
As for the comparisons with Austin, that's what people love to do, compare people or things that look slightly similar, even though they were worlds apart.

I think Goldberg was really over because it was his hometown crowd and that made it much better. Not to say the same reaction would have happened somewhere else. That and the fact I'm sure everyone had enough of Hogan and wanted to see him lose.
Just imagine how the PPV numbers would have been if they went that route. In the "Rise and Fall of WCW" Goldberg made it quite clear that not having in on PPV was a huge mistake. Ratings were more important than money for Bischoff. They could have made some good money.

The thing people loved about Goldberg was that he seemed like an unstoppable machine, his matches were so short because he ploughed through everyone with such ease and it made him look like the kind of person the other wrestlers should fear. It took the nWo to the point where they used tazers on him for crying out loud. He was awesome.
In WWE, Vince stopped making him so mysterious by having him talk alot more and cut promos for longer than he used to. He booked him horribly too, aside from the Rock and HHH he was essentially treading water until his release. His match with Brock was dreadful.

I disagree with the statement that he was booked badly in the WWE. The man went through every star they had on RAW and was made to look like a beast the entire thing through. Problem was he wanted to be pushed like he was in WCW and that would have been bullshit. He had a presense but his wrestling skills were mediocre and his mic skills were nothing special. The man was incredibly over-rated and let the special treatment he got in WCW go to his head.

They should have shown video packages of his WCW dominance and then have him just come out and destroy a guy. |

I can understand him going over, but destroying everyone would be pointless. Then add on the fact that he didnt have many matches that last that long in WCW. It's never been known as the most demanding in-ring wrestling company. Hell, all the internet wrestling fans talk about is how the top stars can't wrestle. They also had him tone down the impact/stiffness of his moves, which hurt his character (it could have been necessary if he was hurting people, but the WWE is also more cautious about this, often changing people's moves to minimize risk). |

That does not prove much though. Hulk Hogan was the WWF's biggest draw for years and he was extremely limited in his matches. |

case in point.
Summerslam 2003.
1)Hometown.
2)HHH is legit injured and should have dropped it
3)Goldberg annihilated everyone kicked out the glass on HHH,just awesome crowd is loving it
then HHH smacks him with a sledge Evolution beatdown blah blah blah......and he wins the title one month later in a totally anticlimatic fashion where truthfully noone cared.
Vince had his chance at Summerslam and blew it.the Jericho feud was booked poorly too

I didn't enjoy having Goldberg around in WCW or WWE. I think I was the only person at the GA Dome that night rooting for Hogan.

I think I was the only person at the GA Dome that night rooting for Hogan. I understand your point, but promotions had been booking around "monsters" for years. You just have to do it right. Think about the way the Road Warriors were booked. They didn't always win, they had great programs with other teams, and they barely even held the belts most of the time, but they were still booked successfully as juggernauts. I'm not putting Goldberg on that level, I'm just saying that you can successfully book "unstoppable machine" characters if you do it right. It's certainly a lost art in wrestling now. There's no point in having giant, monster characters when any and everybody can beat them. I know some people find that kind of character boring, but I think they're a necessary part of wrestling that many people find exciting, as you saw first hand. As for his stiffness, I usually like stiff matches, but only when it's a part of a skilled wrestler's total package. It seems like Goldberg's stiffness was a result of pure greenness and lack of technique, so I agree with you there. |

Oh my god, for those last four miserable years of WCW, that was easily the greatest moment. I mean, WCW hadn't thought of a goddamned good thing since Hogan went heel, but then Goldberg hit the scene. I was still relatively young and holy hell did I love that match.
But now of course I know Goldie's a prick and lacks talent when he's not billed to be a monster. But that Hogan match!!! Whew! Man!

Loved, absolutely loved Goldberg in WCW. Apart from the SummerSlam '03 main event and Backlash, his stint in WWE was pretty indifferent to me. Still liked the guy, just it was different...
