Hey,
I was just curious as to why former NWA World Heavyweight champions like Terry Funk, Dusty Rhodes and Harley Race weren't ever able to win the WWF Heavyweight title during their run in the WWF.
I mean, their time in the NWA was legendary, as were their reigns as NWA World champion, but when they came to the WWF, they were more or less wasted away and never even held a single title, which I think is ridiculous.
Sure, Harley Race was the "King" of the WWF, but that is certainly nowhere near the NWA World title, which he held 8 times prior to entering the WWF.
I guess it can be summed up that they all entered in the WWF at the wrong time, which was during "The Hogan Era" and that right there stopped any and all chance they could have had of holding the WWF Heavyweight title.
It's unfortunate, but that's why I think it was. Hogan was just too damn selfish to lose to any of these guys.
Oh well. What's your guys take on it?? Since these guys held the NWA World title, do you think they should have been the WWF World champ as well while they were there or not??

Maybe it just wasn't in Vince's grand scheme of things.Or they didn't fit his idea at that time.

Vince doesn't like things/people from other companies. Vince likes his own ideas and that's it.

No. NWA= Wrestling, and telling a story in the ring. This would not have cut it in the WWE, none of the characters were colourful enough to sell merchendise.

I think all were past their primes by the time they entered the WWF. Especially with the likes of Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, and Hulk Hogan walking around backstage. They was a ton of talent that had a lot more to give and could pool in fans. Most of the former NWA Champions didn't have that going for them.
The exception, of course, is Dusty Rhodes. He got over while being made into a mockery. Just think what he could've done if Vince tried to push him.
And besides, Ric Flair held the title twice in his first WWF run, so its not like Vince was specifically trying to tear the NWA alumni apart (just look at the push Roddy Piper got!).

Ive never personally understood this. Honestly during the Hogan Era you had some of the NWAs biggest World Champions come through. Funk, Steamboat, Flair, Race and Rhodes. If you could have used them all as heels and build the matches up as "former" world champions or something creative and then have your current champion beat them, it could really add fuel to an impress resume. It would just be hard to see Steamboat and Rhodes as heels though

Vince has never known what to do with something he didnt create.......especially if that act was sucessful elsewhere like The Road Warriors,Flair,Arn and Tully,Steiners,Vader.
the list goes on.
just a prime example were the Steiners.Jesus they were over like Rover for Vince......but because they didnt want to fight in the Rumble(something many teams protested against and were listened to)they were jobbed out then they left.

Vince doesn't like things/people from other companies. Vince likes his own ideas and that's it. This. Which is funny, especially as most of the talent that he got had wrestled all over the US in other companies as well...

Terry, Dory, Harley, & Dusty were well past their prime when they cam into the WWF during the mid-late 80's, and although they did not win any championships, they did play big roles in the WWF, especially Race & Dusty. Steamboat burned his bridge with the WWF when he took a paternity leave, and when he returned he was clearly no longer World Title material, and when he was World Title material in the WWF he was behind Hogan, Macho, Andre and Ted DiBiase on the totem poll.
I have said it time and again that what makes the WWF Championship of the pre-Attitude Era so special, is the fact that the title was not whored-out by being passed around to every big name in the company.

Race, Rhodes, Flair, Dory and Terry Funk, Steamboat, Windham.....However of all NWA champions I think we're forgetting the main one.......How in the blue hell did Rugged Ronnie Garvin not get a push in the WWF. I mean he even had the yellow trunks

vince was looking for roided out musclemen then, theatrical performers. nwa was a place of grit and 'old style' wrestling, completely what the wwf was trying to move away from.
