Hey all, i was wondering what you thought about the Rumble from 1999. IMo it was a poor show with one good match - Rock/Mankind - but that was really cause of the stip & spots in the match.
Everything was kind of boring,
X-Pac/Gangrel had no real build to it, had a last minute add on feel.
Bossman/Road Dogg didn't have the hardcore title on the line when they had been feuding for it & was a nothing gained normal match.
Billy Gunn/Ken Shamrock was a run of the mill IC title match with the title never going to change hands in the match & a way to get Billy out of the Rumble abit easier later on.
Sable/Luna could of been alot better if they hadn't done the bad back angle during Heat, could of been done during the entrance.
Rock/Mankind as i said early was the only good match but again that was cos of the stip & spots it had to make it a big deal.
Rumble match was from start to finish about Austin/Vince which took away from the match itself & others in it & in the end we got a blow off cage match at IYH between the 2 instead of a huge WM bout.
Thats just my opinion of the event, it was my first Rumble i watched live on TV & didn't live up to past Rumbles i had watched before hand.
Thanks for reading

It's a pretty brutal show. Easy to watch though, just like any Russo PPV. Just not very good.

It's all down to perspective, but yeah, IMO now, it was a nothing show really, but at the time I probably thought it was awesome.
In regards to 'strong matches' it just depends which way you look at it; are they matches that hit the mark in terms of sports entertainment workrate or pro wrestling effiency? Everyone's different, but I thought they were mostly dire, and the whole thing seemed to serve the Corporation VS Austin feud, apart from Rock and Mankind.
Just my two cents.

I was at this show as a 14 year old Austin/DX/Foley mark and Corporation hater and it was pretty bad. X-Pac was the only face that won so what's that say. I've never rewatched it except for the Rock/Mankind "I Quit" match which at the time was disappointing but having seen it again since it's a pretty decent match.
The three things that stand out from the rumble that I can remember were being excited for Kane's debut to see him do some damage but then he eliminates himself like an idiot.
Mark Henry laughing away at Chyna when Stone Cold eliminates her was the highlight of the night.
Lastly if I recall correctly the worst part about being at this show live was that Austin/McMahon did the majority of their fighting away from the ring. So being there in person I couldn't see really anything that was happening between the two of them until they came back to the ring towards the end of the match.
