So I'm watching a bunch of past matches in preparation for this year's Mania, and I'm on Wrestlemania VII's infamous retirement match.
I cannot BELIEVE how strongly they put over the Ultimate Warrior here. FIVE elbow drops. Warrior should have been legally dead, but instead, he got right back up and finished Savage off. Just blows my mind knowing that the following year, Savage was fighting for the WWF Championship and the Warrior wasn't even booked in a match. Still, possibly Warrior's best match.
Better than that though was the reunion of Savage and Elizabeth. Such a wonderful, Disney-esque moment in wrestling.
Thoughts of the match or the PPV in general?

nice thread chief.
I thought the match was great.....the build was top notch and it was a dream match of sorts with the 2 being top face and heel in the 2 years preceding.
its also better than their Summerslam 92 match IMHO.

UW's greatest match is against Honky at Summerslam 1988. Possibly against HHH at WM12 also

The most underrated match that has ever taken place, like you I have been watching all the Mania's and hadn't seen 7 yet, that match blew my mind, a kickout after 5 elbows, I did not see that coming. And then the match went on for another like 15 minutes.

I liked the match I really didn't like how Warrior took 5 Elbow Drops from Savage and still managed to even move but he did...Also Didn't like the "cocky pin" in the end either. Pretty Good Match though I wouldn't say it was The Ultimate Warrior's best.

Wrestlemania 7.....my first Wrestlemania and I was a huge Warrior fan back in the day. Brilliant storyline and match. Still love the tears from the women in the crowd and Bobby Heenan saying "maybe her shoes are too tight!?" - still use that one today!  Warriors kneepads and trunks "means much more than this" - ace! |

Wrestlemania 7 was one of my favorite wrestlemania's. this was the era of wrestling i grew up with and can never get enough of seeing it. The warrior savage match was good the only thing i diden't like was warrior getting up after 5 elbow drops.

I was more enamoured with Elizabeth returning to Savage's side post-match, that was great, 'Disney-esque' is a good way of putting it.
For once, Warrior used some psychology, when he raised his hands to the sky, giving the illusion his power was sapped, despite absorbing five elbow drops from Savage, who had used the move so effectively previously.
The ending was dross with the multiple shoulder tackles, and using that 'power' to haul Savage back into the ring, only to do it again and again. Then the foot on the chest (whilst moving his foot) was a bit much for me personally, but post-match I didn't mind it.
I personally believe Warrior's best opponents were either Savage, Hogan or Rude.

I think that was easily the best match on the card. The buildup, the emotion, and stakes made this a very memorable match. I remember watching this and thinking that the Ultimate Warrior had no shot of getting up after 5 elbow drops. Me and my friend went completely nuts after that. If you were not around at this time, it's hard to put into words how popular the Ultimate Warrior was with kids my age.
Savage reuniting with Elizabeth in the end is still one of the most memorable moments in Wrestling for me, especially when he opens the ropes for her to exit, like she always used to do for him. Overall an amazing match filled with great memories.

i hate how savage was constantly buried because of his size, always near the top but never truly getting enough glory in the end. he was mega over for basically his whole career too.

Fantastic match for the Era, I was watching it going mad.
However like others here watching it back the foot on the chest seems disrespectful but hey, its Warrior after all!!
His best match though was all down to the magic of one Mr Rick Rude

I will alway's remember this match,not just because it was one of the best mania main event's.This was the first time I seen my uncle cry.During the reunion of Savage & liz.He was a big Savage fan,I was 10 and he was 34.I remember me and my cousins where going for warrior and he was going for savage.He lost it once they hugged.MEMORY'S!

This was one of my favorite matches of all time.
Excellent buildup - this storyline was months in the making, and moment after moment it led to so much anticipation - especially when they put career on the line since Warrior lost the strap to Slaughter (hence, "Means much more than this!")
Excellent match - nice sequence, false ending (Warrior retreating to the lockers because he thought his warriors in heaven turned their backs on him, haha), good finish.
Excellent post-match storyline - Reunion of Savage and Liz was one of the most memorable and sincere moments in wrestling. Wrestling's "first couple" reunited after so many years... this isn't just a couple of weeks worth of storyline, this has YEARS of history behind it. So meaningful, so consistent.

The only thing I wish could've gone better were the shoulder tackles. Warrior should've done them a bit menacing (i think thats the word im looking for) I dont like how he took his time with every tackle.

I don't think you guys understand the feud that was going on.
Savage and Warrior did not like each other (in the feud, not real life, obviously - actually the two got along very well). Savage and Sherri cost Warrior the WWF title at the 1991 Royal Rumble (vs. Slaughter) and interfered in other matches and attacked him from beind in this timeframe as well.
The reason Savage went for 5 elbow drops was because he loathed the Warrior, he wanted to make him suffer. But upon spending that much time dropping elbows, Warrior got a second wind.
As for Warrior's "cocky" cover...again, these two were built up as absolutely hating each other. Why would Warrior show respect to a man that cost him the world title and tried to end his career by dropping his lethal elbow from the top rope 5 times? This wasn't face vs. face. This was way over face vs. way over heel.
The build-up was better than any of the other matches at Wrestlemania, and had they not given the belt to Slaughter (or had Warrior win a rematch shortly thereafter), having this one for the title would have made the stakes even larger.
That Hogan/Slaughter feud was boring, the match was average. Then they had that stupid botched fireball thing as a bonus to those that bought the Coliseum Video.
