Rand Paul, Ron Paul's son, is running for Senate in Kentucky.
He has seemingly said that you should not be forced to wear seat belts that it should not be mandated by the government.
What are your thoughts?
Should the government be allowed to force you to wear seat belts or should you choose for yourself if you want to wear one or not.

My brother died because he didnt wear one and they said if he did, he might of only had severe injuries.
But as a law, im not sure. Should it be heavily pushed, yes. It'd also make families and Insurance companies happy. If your over 18, then it shouldnt be a law but heavily pushed you do wear one. But under 18, definatley wear one.

I have always hated this law. It just represents to me the government overstepping its bounds into my life
if i want to be dumb and not wear it...that should be my choice

I think thats pretty much common sense. Of course I also think Ron Paul is a nutjob. One reason why he garnered like .01% of votes in the last election

I think it should be mandatory. It is for your own good and it prevents roads and freeways from being closed longer if they have to scrape your mangled body off of the road. . Click it or ticket! ![:P](http://www.wrestlingfigs.com/images/tongue.gif)

Without seatbelts people die. So yes, it should be the law, and it should be enforced.

I do think the Government should tell folks not wearing a seat belt could kill you. Because if are in an accident, it could. They don't fine a guy walking down the street smoking.

I think they should heavily tell people to do it. As far as it being illegal i don't know if it should be illegal or not.

As someone mentioned, if you make wearing a seat belt mandatory, you have to sweep across the board in regards to any number of items that can currently be defined as a personal choice that improves or causes detriment to one's opportunity for survival.
- Helmets for motorcyclists - Smoking tobacco - Alcohol consumption
FWIW, I do wear my seatbelt, but I don't think it ought to be a law.

This needs to be a law. Not wearing seat belts kills people if they get into accidents, plain and simple.

Agreed 110%. This is a personal choice. I wear my seatbelt 100% of the time. To the point where, even if I'm backing my car out of my garage and just parking it in my driveway; I still wear my seat belt. But that doesn't mean other people should be required to do the same. Let's just say, he'll change his mind. Why would he change his mind? This needs to be a law. Not wearing seat belts kills people if they get into accidents, plain and simple. This is like saying that "bullets kill people, not guns." The act of driving a vehicle is the "dangerous" thing. Wearing or not wearing a seatbelt may have a difference on the outcome of if you die or not in an accident; but regardless, the dangerous activity is driving in the first place. But I don't see many people saying that no one should be driving.

I can see the point behind not making it mandatory. It doesn't really matter to me, because when I was old enough to buckle myself in, we had a "magic car" that wouldn't start if everyone's seatbelts weren't latched.
However, on a point that was brought up, I would not mind at all to see cigarettes made illegal, or at least made illegal in all locations that aren't completely blocked off from other people. I don't need to breathe in your death-fumes just because you want to slowly kill yourself, thanks.

I don't like the idea of someone forces me to do anything, especially the government. It should be a choice. However I do believe kids should lawfully wear a seat belt at all times. When I was a kid I hated wearing one but as an adult I feel safe wearing one and make everyone who rides with me wear one.

I think it should be law, becuase without the law some people might think that they dont need to do it and then the worst happens.

If you don't wear seat belts and get hurt, it's your own damn fault.
