The US plays the 2nd place team from Group D and England plays the 1st place team from Group D. Hopefully we play Ghana as Germany will be a tough game for both teams. Unless Serbia or Australia win and Germany lose, it would be better for both teams.

It was really one of those days where Slovenia, England and US all just had to go out and take care of business and not worry about "well if we dont do this, we need this to happen" England and United States both did that and they both advanced.

Outstanding game by the referees, particularly on shutting down Clint Dempsey. They really deserved the win over USA here, such a shame they came away empty handed.

just wondering, whats the atmosphere like in USA? has there been a reaction, and how big? does it make front page news, or are people not really bothered at all?

just wondering, whats the atmosphere like in USA? has there been a reaction, and how big? does it make front page news, or are people not really bothered at all? I go to bars for all the games here, which broadcast at 9-10am sometimes, and they open JUST for World Cup. The best part? They're absolutely packed! As someone that's been a soccer fan for so many years, it's heartwarming to finally see Americans embrace it. There are shirts waving, faces painted, and cheers all around...not to mention a drunk Doomrider with a vuvuzela he got on eBay. I never thought it would get this popular in a country where baseball is considered a legit sport. And this has been making me laugh since Pizza posted it:

No, unless you go to a place that has a soccer specific crowd, its still not really getting over here. I think a lot has to do with the time zone as well as we're all at work during the matches but also, soccer just isnt really that big here. The casual person would just rather hear by word of mouth or see the highlights on sportscenter I also dont see why baseball shouldnt be considered a legit sport either

If fat out of shape me can do it...it's not a sport, ha.
Also what was up with Algeria? I felt like they were just on a mission to keep the US from scoring. They had no offense whatsoever aside from what? 2-3 shots on goal maybe? Plus the late cards were just disrespectful.

I think the playing level is different. No offense but a fat and out of shape you probably cant hit a Joel Zumaya 101mph fastball. Thats neither here nor there though

E A S Y ...for the United States. If we're bringing up stupid tabloid headlines then 'USA wins 1-1' is near the top of the list (yes I realise it's supposed to be witty and in reference to the US "doing well" against England but it's just stupid). Second of all, easy for the USA? Ha. If it were that easy, you would have won all of your games. Not to say you didn't play well, a lot of people under estimated the US.

Just because the English media thought the US were 'lowly Yanks' doesn't mean everybody thought that. If you ask most people with some common sense, they said the game would be close. I said 2-1 England personally, maybe I would have said 1-1 but dammit I'm English!
