Sorry if this is old. I kinda knew for a day or so but didn't post til now.. www.slashfood.com/2010/06/24/animal-lovers-cry-foul-on-az-lion-burger/?icid=mainHere's one of the more bizarre stories to emerge from this year's international soccer madness: in honor of the World Cup and its host country, a restaurant in Mesa, Arizona is serving up burgers made from lion meat. (It's dubious what kind of "honor" it is for a restaurant half a world away to be taking one of Africa's most iconic and threatened species and tossing it in a meat grinder.) Apparently sensing that the burger wouldn't be a roaring hit with animal-rights folks, owner Cameron Selogie of Il Vinaio opted to keep the special off the sandwich board and on the down low, announcing it to a select list of restaurant regulars via email. Turns out one of the regulars is an animal lover (who, it seems, doesn't seem to mind Il Vinaio's other occasional gamey offerings, such as wild boar), and she alerted the press. Now the story has been picked up as far away as the UK, with CNNMoney.com launching an investigation into the source of the big cat meat. Selogie claimed his lion had come from a "free-range" farm in Illinois (sure, you know, that famous lion farm south of Chicago...), but it turns out the source is some shady guy who runs a "skinning operation." Yuck. If you've got the stomach, you can check out all the sordid details at CNNMoney.com. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So yeah that is ing gross and I hope no one actually eats that sh*t!
What are your thoughts though?

I WISH there was a lion farm here, I'd be down there half the summer. On a serious note, that's just plain wrong. I'm not PETA-level animal lover (not even a vegetarian), but whether your vegetarian or not you know animals need a bit (at the least) more respect not just in the way they are taken care of while living, but how they set them up for being food as well. Lions? Who in their right mind would even consider lion as a delicacy? (EDIT: Besides Andrew Zimmerman and even I would think he would be disgusted.) Guess humans need to be on the top of every single food chain. Considering not just my post but this entire subject overall is timing win because this is how the topics were aligned when I clicked on this:

The way I see it, the lion would eat me and not think twice. I don't mind eating him.

Lion farms in Illinois? In 24 years I've yet to see one of those.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. ---And if the other guy cares so much about how animals are 'set up' to become food, he might as well never eat meat again. The factory farms that make up the majority of the meat industry, and the slaughter houses that 'process" the majority of the animals are pretty damn far from being 5-star hotels.

I don't think I would want to eat anything I can see at the zoo. You can see chickens and cows at the zoo. You can also see fish and pretty much any other animal commonly eaten at the zoo.

If this is a situation where they are reared for eating, much in the same way a cow or pig would be, i dont see whats so bad about it, sure i dont like the idea of animals being murdered, but to speak out against it in these situations would be hypocritical seeing as im not a vegetarian, if they were raised for that purpose and it doesnt effect the natural levels of lions then i see no major issues.....could probably be worth a try to.

This is sickening to me. Lions have no natural predators and it angers humans because they see it as something that they can never conquer. Humans don't need to be the predators of everything for sake. It's all about pride, thats all. Im not vegetarian btw

Cows and chickens at a zoo? I've never seen a cow or a chicken at any zoo, well the 3 I've been to. LA, San Diego and San Francisco zoo.

If lion was eaten on a larger scale, lions wouldn't be on the endangered species list.
