they have said they were slightly inspired by the early 80's wwf title belt that the iron shiek held but beyond that they don't resemble any of the better known belts.

yeah I can see that (insperation from the early 80s WWF Iron Shiek belt), but I think on the mattycollector forums they said it was inspired by the Mattel logo.

In an interview with the guy who designed it, he said that it was a conglomeration of the Mattel symbol and the "Big Green Belt".

Oh yeah, mostly the side plates on that one though. There's no wacky flexing man on that belt.

It's based on a slightly changing title used in the early 80's. It difficult to find pictures of either version of the belt. The first version was the "Big Green Belt" as seen here: There was a version after Hogan won it that has a muscular figure on the center plate which you can slightly see:
