Hey guys, just wanted to know why everyone collects (in general, jakks/mattel etc). I sometimes question why I buy figures, and whether I really actually benefit from having them-ie, is the money I spend on them justified?
I was wondering why you guys collect.
Just a few reasons I think about...
Do you collect due to a nostalgic feeling, or that you are a big wrestling fan (and you collect merch)? Do you like to play/animate/fed with them? Do you collect because you always have and you feel obliged to, to keep up the collection? Do you see people buy them on this board, and does this make you want to have some yourself? Do you enjoy having and setting up a displayed collection? Do you feel that getting rare figures means you could make a profit in the future?
I know most of the board tend to just display them, I was wondering whether people have a satisfaction of doing this, and why some people have loads, rather than just a few favorite figs.
Also, could you ever easily stop buying them?

I buy figs that I'll use in my feds plus I've been a wrestling fan all my life. Don't see myself stopping but I have slowed down quite a bit so possibly soon I'll stop buying. I'm mostly buying UFC and divas/knockouts figs now..

I display mine sometimes but I also play with them. Im 24 now but Ive played with wrestling figs since the BCA days. Call me a loser, but Ive had a lot of fun. I have to put my creative imagination to use somehow.

I do it mainly for nostalgic reason of the fact that I've always watched wrestling and I collected wrestling figures and toys since I can remember. I stopped between the ages of 16-20 (I am 21 now) because I was finishing High school and becoming very busy and moving alot and stuff but after seeing Mattel's product, it sparked my love for collecting back.
I think I could easily stop and I know I will slow down once its mainly just repaints but right now theres no reason to at all. I dont buy stuff that I cant really afford and would not be mad if I had to pass on a figure. I really just display but if I am bored I will play with them (i'm not afraid to admit it) but I dont have a fed or anything like that nor animate with them.

It gives me something to look forward to. I enjoy going out looking in stores for things when I can. It's all about having fun and building up a good collection for me. If I wasn't collecting, I'd be bored and have no real other hobby.

As far as Wrestling figures go - The Legends/Classics I collect for the memories of my childhood watching wrestling with my father until he passed. Modern guys I collect who I enjoy watching.
Batman/DC - I collect because I've always loved them since I was a child in the 70's with my first Mego Batman.

For my 10th birthday in 1997, I received figures from Superstars Series 2 & 3 (BCA). I've been hooked ever since.
It's a very fun hobby to have, and for me personally, it's inexpensive. I only buy what I really want, and I'm extremely patient to wait for the right scan, the right attire, the right style, etc. I love being able to go into a store and check out the figures. It's like a tradition for me; all my friends and girlfriends in the past have been supportive of it, even. I used to play with them until I got in high school. My cousin and I used to stay up late and customize figures, throw shows down, and have crazy matches. He moved to TN in 2003, and got out of wrestling all together, so it contributed to my lost of interest, sadly. I decided to keep collecting though, because I still loved doing it.
Part of it is definitely nostalgia. I don't think I would jump in as an adult without having the history. The other part is just having something to look forward to as a hobby. I really like wrestling. It's had a fairly large impact on my life, and since I don't go to shows or buy much merchandise outside of figures, it's great to have something to display. I still buy cds and collect vinyl records, because I love physical media. I like the idea of having something beyond digital means.
I never collected for value. Even when CS1 HBK and CSTT1 LOD were going for well over $50 on a regular basis, I never wanted to part with them. Now, I don't care as much, but after investing 6 years worth into the CS line and cherry picking my favorites, it's hard to just part with them. One day I might try to get a few hundred out of them all, but that would only be to put back into collecting.
As it stands right now, I enjoy Mattel's effort tremendously. They do such a good job that I'm finding it harder and harder to resist spending more money on them. I do figure reviews (more on the way soon) on my website, and otherwise just display them on a shelf.

I'm in my mid forties and grew up watching Florida Championship Wrestling, then Georgia Championship Wrestling on the Superstation. As a kid I believed it was real. As a teenager I helped set up NWA rings at local shows. As an adult I was a sports writer and wrote several stories about the sport as it took off in the mid to late 80s. Over those years I have had the good fortune to meet and interview many legendary wrestlers and announcers, as well as getting a behind the scenes glimpse into the business. I doubt many people in this forum have interviewed Gordon Solie or been ringside ( inside the barrier...in Greg Valentine's corner ) when Valentine faced the Ultimate Warrior ( Got drenched in the sweat..yuck ) or ever Jake "the Snake" Roberts and Kevin Sullivan to the ring under a shower of soda and popcorn. I have done all those things and many more involving wrestling. I got hooked as a kid and it has carried through to this day. That is why I collect.

Because I play with them every day. Ever since I received my first set of Nash-Luger-Macho-Sting, I have been entirely obsessed. I have notebooks upon notebooks full of PPVs and title histories and all sorts of things. I love coming up with new storylines and evolutions and stables. I love creating matches. A few years ago I would have been embarrassed, but I stopped caring. I have fun doing it because it is fun to do. I do not post my federation online or share it with anyone, I just love to do it for me.

I collect because of Nostalgia. I only collect Classics/Legends/etc. because it's who I like as a child. I display them loose because deep down I'm still a little kid and love toys. I'm no longer up to date with wrestling, so I don't collect modern day wrestling figs. The 3 (4) figures I will never stop collecting as long as they make them are Ultimate Warrior, L.O.D, and debut attire Undertaker. I think I could stop collecting other classics though.

I'm just a huge wrestling fan, and a fully pose able 3D model of my favorites wrestlers are way cooler than a lame poster or 8x10.

I just like to have them. I still have some of the old figures (don't know what company) where the big thing was the elbows and knees made little cracking sounds when you bent them. I fell out of watching wrestling for years once I left high school, but now that I watch wrestling regularly again I'm interested in the figures. It's an expensive hobby for me right now as I'm building my collection with all the guys/Divas that I really like and missed over the years, but I'm also planning to do some fun stuff with them very soon

Because I'm a wrestling fan and they are the most widely available and cost effective forms of WWE memorabilia.

Cause I have nothing better to do with my time and money. I feel like I have to collect something, and there is nothing I am more into than wrestling.

I wouldn't have a lot to do with my cash. This is something I enjoy and it's fun for me and my friend to do a fed. He gets Smackdown, I get Raw we have Supershows, PPVs, Drafts, etc. It's also really fun customizing with someone you know to help like my buddy. I play with my figs and do feds so thats why I collefct.
