Entry 16: Bugsy and the Azalea Town GymAzalea Town
I think my adventures in Azalea Town are nearly complete. I've fought through many battles with several different Pokemon. I've gone through a cave. I've helped a ball maker save Slowpoke from the Slowpoke Well. I've added a Slowpoke and a Togepi to my party. I've trained my booty off in order to get ready for this next gym battle. I think I'm finally ready. Its time to challenge Bugsy to a battle. I make my way straight to the gym to make my mark.
I look around and see four Junior Trainers that train under Bugsy in this gym. I decide battling them all could provide some worthwhile experience against the Bug Type and maybe teach me a few things about my Pokemon. I walk up to the first trainer(s) and say that I'm here to challenge the gym. In unison (creepy) they say that I will regret that.
Twins Amy and May would like to battle!Amy and May started off the battle with a
Spinarak, a Pokemon I had never seen before. Quilava could use a bit of experience against Bug types, so I send him out. Turns out, Ember is a very strong move against Bugs and the Spinarak faints after a couple of hits. Next out, was a Ledyba. I decide this would be a good time for Togepi to prove its place in my party. Surprisingly, Togepi made pretty easy work of the Ledyba, which once again proves to be a very tough Pokemon to raise.
Twins Amy and May were defeated!
Quliava grew to level 15!After defeating the Twins, I move on to the next trainer, who is a simple Bug Catcher. He says that he was impressed by my battling against the twins, but that he was much better. He told me to prepare to lose.
Bug Catcher Al would like to battle!Let's just say that Al was a little overconfident heading into this one. All he had was a Caterpie and a Weedle. Spearow was able to easily take care of both of them. I will give him this though, Weedle was able to poison Spearow before the battle was over.
Bug Catcher Al was defeated!I quickly heal Spearow's poisoning with a Psncureberry. Al seemed shocked that he lost with his Caterpie and Weedle, but I move on to the next guy. He tells me that Al has always been a bit delusional, but that he really has stepped up when it comes to Bug Pokemon. I'm not sure to believe him, but I challenge him anyways.
Bug Catcher Benny would like to battle!Benny started off the battle with a Weedle, so I figured it would be more of the same. I did think it was very strange that Benny's Weedle was quite a bit weaker than even Al's was. I easily beat the Weedle with Spearow, only to see Benny send out a
Beedrill. I was shocked to find that this Beedrill was the strongest Pokemon I've battled against so far. However, after taking a couple of hits, Spearow's type advantage proved to be helpful and the Beedrill fell. After that Beedrill, came a
Kakuna. I sent out Togepi to battle this time. Despite its high defense, Togepi hit a few Swifts and sent the Kakuna packing.
Bug Catcher Benny was defeated!
Spearow grew to level 13!
Spearow learned Fury Attack! With one more Junior Trainer to go, I figure my Pokemon are healthy enough to battle the last trainer. I have two Pokemon that haven't even battled at all yet after all. I challenge the final trainer. He says that he was surprised that I made it that far and only a few people have even been able to challenge him. He says that he has only lost one time to some red-haired kid, but he even beat Bugsy. He tells me that I am no different that the rest of them.
Bug Catcher Josh would like to battle! After Josh talking about Bryan, I was admittedly a little knocked off my game here. I decide to go with Geodude in this battle, since he has a very high defense and Rock type moves are strong against Bug. Josh has a
Paras, which is another new entry into my Pokedex. Geodude's Rock Throw was too much for Paras to handle, but once again, one of my Pokemon got poisoned. It wasn't enough to defeat me though.
Bug Catcher Josh was defeated
Geodude grew to level 13!After that, I knew I was ready to challenge Bugsy for the next badge. I decide that its about time to stock up on some goods before challenging, just in case. I head straight to the Pokemon Center first though, to heal Geodude's poisoning as well as all of my other Pokemon who did battle. I then go to the Poke Mart to buy some Potions, Antidotes, and even Poke Balls for after the battle is over.
I'm really confident heading into this battle. My only Pokemon that has really no effect on Bug type is Bellsprout, so I only plan on using him in emergency situations. I've heard about a very powerful Scyther that Bugsy owns. That's Quilava's battle right there. My strategy seems pretty good going in. I'm excited and head straight back to the gym.
I walk past all the Junior Trainers, and surprisingly they wish me luck in the battle. I introduce myself to Bugsy, who says he can't believe that I beat all of his apprentices. He tells me how great Bug Pokemon are and that he knows everything about them. He tells me that I hope I'm not a sore loser and the battle kicks off.
Leader Bugsy would like to battle!
Leader Bugsy sent out Metapod!
Go! Slowpoke! vs.
I quickly find out that Bugsy is a whole different breed from the rest of the trainers in this gym. This Metapod is even stronger than the Beedrill that I had battled earlier in the day. I decided to go with Slowpoke because of its high defense. However, the first few moves of this battle showed me that I Slowpoke may not be able to defeat Metapod if it simply uses Tackle. Mud Slap isn't very effective either against Bug Types. In a move that I don't do very much, I use Curse to raise Slowpoke's Attack and Defense at the cost of its Speed. I figure Slowpoke's Speed is already slower than Metapod anyways, so there's no point in conserving it. Curse helped quite a bit, and Tackles became more effective. Metapod's low Attack made its moves do very little against Slowpoke. After a few more Tackles. Slowpoke was victorious.
Enemy Metapod fainted!
Leader Bugsy sent out Scyther!
Slowpoke, that's enough, come back!
Go! Quilava! vs.
This was the battle I had been waiting for. Seeing Bugsy's Scyther in person was very intimidating. I decided to go through with my strategy and bring out my strongest Pokemon, Quilava. Quilava also had a type advantage, but I was surprised to find this only gave me the slight advantage. In the first move, Scyther made its Speed apparent by quickly hitting it with a Quick Attack. My Quilava has been weakened quite a bit, but is fine to continue on. I use another Ember, and am shocked to find that Scyther faints before it will be able to do damage to any of my other Pokemon.
Enemy Scyther fainted!
Leader Bugsy sent out Kakuna!
Quilava, that's enough, come back!
Go! Togepi! vs.
This was Bugsy's last Pokemon. I was very close to getting my second badge. I decide to use Togepi because I think it could use some big battle experience and because of its high defense. I believe that similar to Slowpoke, Togepi will be able to take Kakuna's hits relatively easily without taking too much damage. I decide that risking using Metronome in hopes that it uses a good attack, but everytime I use it, its something that doesn't do hardly any damage to Kakuna. Togepi's Swift doesn't do much damage, and he doesn't have an attack raising move like Slowpoke did to do more damage. Kakuna's Poison Sting is beginning to make me worry about Togepi getting poisoned. I decide to risk using Metronome one more time.
Togepi used Baton Pass!
Togepi returned to its ball!
Go! Slowpoke! vs.
I go with Slowpoke, since he can use Curse to raise his attack and do more damage to Kakuna. I use Curse, but not before Kakuna poisons Slowpoke with a Poison Sting. I am upset to find this out, but fight on anyways. After every Tackle, Slowpoke is weakened, almost to the point of fainting. I decide to use one of the Antidotes that I bought before its too late. It was just in time too, because Kakuna's Poison Stings were almost too much for Slowpoke. Two more Tackles and Kakuna was down for the count!
Enemy Kakuna fainted!
Togepi grew to level 13!
Leader Bugsy was defeated!Bugsy seemed surprised that I knew as much as I did about Pokemon. He congratulated me on earning the Hive Badge. He told me that I could now use HM01 Cut outside of battle. Maybe that has something to do with the little trees that block my way. He also tells me that all of my Pokemon would listen to me up until they reached level 30! He then gives me a TM49 for having such a good battle. I thank Bugsy for everything before heading to the Pokemon Center to heal. Its time to move on and see where the road will lead me.
