As we usher in a new year of the World Wrestling Federation, we begin to see the development of young wrestlers. No longer does the WWF need Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair to survive, as guys like Shawn Michaels and Owen Hart begin to strive for the WWF Championship.
It is not all smooth sailing though, as the WWF's rival World Championship Wrestling continues to circle around like sharks, stealing all wrestlers even slightly unhappy with their standing with the WWF.
This is the beginning of a war. |

WCW MONDAY NITRO January 1 1996 @ Atlanta, GA
Nitro kicks off with a bang, a pyro technics display going off on the stage as Eric Bischoff welcomes us to the show, alongisde Steve 'Mongo' McMichael and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan. Appearances from WCW World Tag Team Champions Harlem Heat, Television Champion Johnny B. Badd and former WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Macho Man' Randy Savage are hyped for later on.
'Nature Boy' Ric Flair (with Arn Anderson, Chris Benoit and Brian Pillman) defeats Marcus Alexander Bagwell (with Scotty Riggs). The WCW World Champion swiftly brushes Bagwell aside. The young star doesn't have much of a chance, especially with the rest of the Four Horsemen at ringside. Flair finishes off Bagwell with the Figure Four Leglock.
After the match, the Horsemen take out Riggs at ringside. Gene Okerlund comes out and interviews them, specifically Flair. The Nature Boy says that tonight is the beginning of the VERY end of Hulk Hogan and Hulkamania. There will be NO focus on Hogan tonight, in fact, no Hogan at all. To make sure he cannot hog the limelight this week, Flair has arranged a main event match for tonight to teach Hogan's supporters a lesson - 'Macho Man' Randy Savage vs. 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson!
Harlem Heat (with Sister Sherri) defeat The Nasty Boys. Another impressive performance from the brothers Stevie Ray and Booker T, the current WCW World Tag Team Champions. Knobbs and Saggs are showing what their true value to WCW is here (not a lot). It's not a long match. Harlem Heat win with the Heat Seeker.
A video package airs from a room filled with smoke, and large shadows visible behind it. The voice of The Taskmaster can be heard as he condemns Hulk Hogan and Hulkamania again. He says that Ric Flair's statement that the end is now is nothing but the truth. The final straw was when Hogan attacked The Giant with a steel chair a couple of weeks ago. Hulk Hogan will soon be gone from WCW. The follower's of Hulk Hogan will then be next.
Eddie Guerrero defeats Dean Malenko. Fantastic match. These two have great chemistry. Malenko rocks Guerrero with some very stiff punches and chops, but his over-confidence proves to be his downfall. Attempting a Texas Cloverleaf to put away Guerrero, Malenko loses focus and is pulled down into a small package and pinned. Guerrero rolls out of the ring, happy with the victory. Malenko looks extremely frustrated.
A video package airs announcing that Clash of the Champions will take place on January 23 in Las Vegas.
'Das Wunderkid' Alex Wright defeats Mr. JL. The exciting young cruiserweight Alex Wright puts on a brilliant show, beating JL with ease. Some sloppy spots from the masked JL will not impress WCW officials. Wright wins with a very nice German Suplex.
We're on the ramp where Gene Okerlund awaits his next guest - United States Heavyweight Champion One Man Gang. Okerlund questions One Man Gang on how it feels to finally hold his first major championship. Gang grabs Okerlund by the throat and tells him to shut up. He says that now he has the U.S Heavyweight Title, nobody will ever come close to holding the belt. He is undefeatable and to prove it, he will take on anyone, anywhere, anytime. Just then, Bam Bam Bigelow came out to a huge reaction, making his debut in WCW. Okerlund asks what Bam Bam is doing here. He says he was just visiting friends, but heard what this idiot had to say and will be happy to challenge him next week for his United States Title. We go to commercials as these two giants stare each other down!
Commercials air for WCW live events in your local area.
The broadcast team discuss the night so far, as well as what's still to come, primarily 'Macho Man' Randy Savage vs. Arn Anderson in our main event.
Johnny B. Badd (with Kimberly Page) defeats Earl Robert Eaton (with Squire David Taylor and Lord Steven Regal). Quick match, with Badd coming out on top with after Steven Regal tried to interfere on Eaton's behalf, but miscommunication between the two led to Badd knocking Regal down, and nailing left-handed jab to the face of Eaton. The Television Champion wins, and leaves with his belt.
A graphic announces that Sting will confront Lex Luger on WCW Saturday Night regarding his recent behaviour. Our main event is next!
Randy Savage defeats Arn Anderson via disqualification. No Horsemen were present at ringside, at least at the start of the match. Savage held his own against the powerful Enforcer, landing all of his signature moves, ready to put Anderson away. However, the Alliance to End Hulkamania made their way down, surrounding the ring. Savage was trapped, no doubt. As they descended upon the Macho Man and beat him to a pulp, Hulkamania made an appearance! Hulk Hogan, alongside Sting, Harlem Heat and Bam Bam Bigelow, came down and chased off the Dungeon of Doom and the Four Horsemen, saving Savage from what surely could have been so much worse. Hogan tells them all to come down and face him, but none of the Alliance chooses to accept Hogan's challenge. Nitro ends with a heated staredown. We're out of time! See you on WCW Saturday Night!

WCW Monday Nitro: Monday 1st January 1996...Ah, the time when WCW and WWF seemed dead on equal, though WCW was started to better the WWF. Ric Flair starting off the show was quite unique, good win for Flair representing the Four Horsemen, the group defeating Marcus Alexander Bagwell. All good, here. Did like the Horsemen then taking out Scotty Riggs as well, Flair seems sure about the end of Hulkamania. Randy Savage and Arn Arnderson should be great. Harlem Heat over the Nasty Boys is fine, good win for Booker T and Stevie Ray, as these two teams had a hardhitting feud if I remember in 1995. Oh god, the Taskmaster. So many oppositions after Hulk Hogan. Eddy Guerrero defeating Dean Malenko is fine, fantastic match that seemed to be ideal, would be extremely short on this one hour edition of Nitro, though unfortunately. I feel it would have been better on Saturday Night. For quality's sake over quantity. Alex Wright defeating Mr JL serves as no surprise, again, this is more of a Pro/Saturday Night match to me. Just a way to get Wright over, probably. One Man Gang, how was he ever WCW US Heavyweight Champion again? Bam Bam Bigelow arriving, could be great, not so sure of him getting an instant title shot though, should have to prove himself to OMG first. Hopefully their bout is better than WrestleMania IV. Johnny B. Badd over Earl Robert Eaton was interesting, the Blue Bloods faction always intrigued me. Wow, Sting and Lex Luger confrontation on Saturday Night: should be great. Wish that they'd had a promo on Nitro though, rather than Bigelow and One Man Gang's promo, or Mr JL and Alex Wright's bout. Randy Savage beating Arn Anderson by disqualification: that damn Alliance to End Hulkamania! Loved Hulkamania making the save though, Bigelow with Hogan, Sting and the Harlem Heat is interesting. An exciting close. Decent episode of Nitro to kick off the year.

1/1/96 Nitro:
- Let's see what you guys have here with this diary. I hope you stay with it guys! Basic squash to kick off Nitro, kinda had to figure that Bagwell stood no shot. Macho/Anderson should be good though. Obvious Harlem Heat win but over an established team is solid. Kevin Sullivan was always an interesting character. I'd love to see him used properly here Chaz. Eddie/Dean would have been awesome and hopefully it got some good time. Wright getting the obvious win again over JL. I see something big in his future, please? BAM BAM! Good debut there and OMG/Bam Bam will be a battle. Another predictable win for Badd here. Nothing too special. Sting/Luger will have me tuning in! Good way to end with a DQ win for Macho and the epic staredown. Will be interesting to see where you take the Alliance to End Hulk storyline. Nice job man.

-Flair over Bagwell was expected. Good to give Bagwell an opportunity at the champ but it was obvious he'd lose. -Harlem Heat over Nasty Boys is a decent one either way. Nothing wrong there. -Guerrero over Malenko is good. Glad you kept the Guerrero push. -Wunderkid over JL is fine either way. -United States Title Match next week? I'm liking that. -Badd over Eaton was expected. -Savage over Anderson was great. Hulk Hogan, Sting, etc coming was good for hype here. -Good show; can't wait for next week.

Hey guys, I've been super busy lately and will be for the next 2 or 3 days, so I thought I'd just post some quick results to tide you over until Wednesday! Apologies.
Monday Night RAW 1/1/1996 @ San Bernardino, CA
King Mabel (with Sir Mo) def. Bob "Sparky Plug" Holly via Belly to Belly Suplex Isaac Yankem DDS def. Tatanka via DDT Hunter Hearst Helmsley def. Goldust via Disqualification Bret Hart vs. The Ringmaster ended in a No Contest after involvement from Shawn Michaels and Diesel
Show Notes: - Early in the night we saw a pre-taped promo from The Undertaker, who sends a message to not only WWF Champion Bret Hart, but his opponent on next week's edition of Monday Night RAW Sycho Sid!
- Jeff Jarrett cuts a promo backstage that enhances his developing heel character.
- Highlights taken from a match between The Smoking Gunns vs. Owen Hart & Yokozuna match from a WWF Live Event are shown. All four men will be in action next week on RAW!
- Razor Ramon joined Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler on commentary during the Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Goldust match. Ramon was insanely over when he made his way to ringside to survey two possible challengers for his Intercontinental Championship.[/font]

Ouch! A belly to belly from Mabel? I didn't know Tatanka was still around, I suppose this was towards the end of his run. HHH vs Goldust vs. Razor could be a great midcard feud. Don't like two matches back to back ending without a conclusive finish. Would like to see what happens next week with these four though.

WWF Monday Night RAW: Monday 1st January 1996...Not so sure on the professionalistic look on the diary that the first show from the WWF is in list format. Maybe it's just my obsessing. With the space between shows we've seen though, you may have very well just waited and worked on RAW to be written in full. King Mabel beating Bob Holly was fine, getting him over. Isaac Yankem DDS getting more popular in a nice back and forth bout with Tatanka. Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Goldust was bizarre as both are heels, very strange. Bret Hart and The Ringmaster was a fair main event, Shawn Michaels and Diesel definitely getting involved means Shawn will be respectful to Bret. Not sure why HBK is here when he was concussed and momentarily retired: next time he was seen was Royal Rumble, serious lack of continuity. Owen Hart should have been lurking around at the time too if HBK was on screen. The Undertaker facing Sycho Sid next week seems pretty big. Not so sure why clips of Owen Hart and Yokozuna facing Smoking Guns was shown: but then again why was Owen and Yoko teaming? I think Owen became more solo again after they lost the belts. Not the best, which is disappointing to say. This seemed like a 1995 episode of RAW, there was seriously no continuity on display and it was like this was just thrown together.
