I keep a knife in my room so I can cut that string. It works better than trying to maneuver the figure out of it.

Yup, the string can be bothersome though.

I keep scissors handy and usually push the feet out first from the back.

Yeah, cut the bands and push out. I usually just push the figure out from the center of the back (if the figure is not in some crazy pre posed position). In the case of crazy poses ,cut the bands first then pull from the waist. That usually prevents any major warping that could loosen or break joints. The the key ,no matter how you do it,is to cut the bands first and slowly remove your figure without forcing it too much. Always,go for the point with the least resistance from the figure.

Most of the recent series' haven't had the string, have they? Elite 7 do, but the basics I've got recently didn't.
I've never had much trouble getting figures out of the packaging. Getting the stands out can be tough, though. Just tonight I had to hack a Sheamus bubble to bits to get the stand out. Almost every figure I open has a really stuck shoulder joint (usually left), for some reason.
