Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.
Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.
This planet has — or rather had — a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.
And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.
Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.
And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, one girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.
Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terribly stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever.
This is not her story.
But it is the story of a young women’s wrestling promotion called Ring of Beauty - not a generic women’s wrestling promotion, never seen before on Earth, and until the terrible catastrophe occurred, never seen or heard of by any human being. Women from all over the world wanted their shot at the big time, and Ring of Beauty was just that - big time woman’s wrestling.
This is that story.
2010 was only the second year for Ring of Beauty, and was much bigger than 2009. Cheerleader Melissa entered as the Ring of Beauty World Champion, rolling off of a win over Japanese legend Mariko Yoshida, but was quickly dethroned by Sara Del Rey on the first show of the year. Del Rey took on Nikki Roxx in a successful first defense, and then backed up her title win with a defense over Melissa in what has been heralded as the best match in Ring of Beauty history. The promotion began to expand, pulling in women from the east coast, bringing them west for the first time in their careers; Ring of Beauty fans were introduced to the likes of Mia Yim and “The Portuguese Princess” Ariel. Then came the biggest announcement: three of the best WWE Divas were not re-signing their contracts, and were instead joining Ring of Beauty! The names were rather big – Melina, Beth Phoenix, and Gail Kim – and quickly the promotion grew to new heights.
With star power in hand, the promotion rapidly expanded to television, signing a deal with Versus on a weekly one hour show called “Primetime”. The promotion changed it’s show schedule to something more like TNA’s, taping several weeks of television from its home base of Sacramento, California, while running bigger shows in larger buildings. Sara Del Rey’s championship reign came to an end at the biggest show in Ring of Beauty history, the first ever Dreamslam. The show was big on two fronts; drawing the biggest attendance in Ring of Beauty history, while it was also the first Internet Pay-Per-View. The new champion was the rechristened Beth Phoenix, who was calling herself “The Firebird” Phoenix, as she upset Del Rey, Cheerleader Melissa and LuFisto to become only the third champion in company history.
Also at Dreamslam was the creation and crowning of the first ever Ring of Beauty Tag Team champions, as Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews, known as The Canadian Ninjas, beat out three other teams in a knockout tournament to become the champions. Their reign would be ended before the year even came to an end, as Nikki Roxx and "The Portuguese Princess" Ariel took home the gold at the final big show of 2010, aptly called "The Final Countdown".
With that, 2010 came to a close with the announcement that on the first Primetime of the new year, a commissioner would be appointed to run the company, with the only hint about the person hired to be commissioner is that is is a she, who has a wrestling background, and is known for something about her body that drives men wild. With fans wondering who it could be, we enter 2011 with the promotion on a continuous rise: will it stop anytime soon?
