UFC 129: Georges St. Pierre Vacating Welterweight Title to Fight Anderson Silva?Rumors of an eventual clash between UFC kingpins Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva are picking up as the two fighters head into what will likely be their final title defenses before the dream bout. Georges St. Pierre, the current UFC Welterweight champion, has completely dominated the division since winning back his title from Matt Serra in April 2008. Title defenses against Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, and most recently Josh Koscheck have looked like a walk in the park for the machine known as “GSP.” While the UFC employs anywhere from seven to eight of the top 10 welterweights in the world, the division looks bare due to the complete control that St. Pierre has on top. The only real fight remaining for St. Pierre at 170-pounds within the UFC is against former EliteXC Welterweight champion, Jake Shields, which will happen at UFC 129 in April. (more...)

From the sounds of it, if both guys win, GSP will be leaving the WW division permanently. Never said it wasn't legit man. GSP said it after UFC 124, Dana White said it at the FFTT Q&A etc. GSP doesn't wanna play around with his weight. If he's moving to 185, it's permanent.

He was going to do it after Kos. Dana asked him to fight Shields as a favor. GSP said ok.

This is actually believable, but he'll fight Shields first.

I feel like now that the wheels are in motion and we get closer to it happening...that SOMETHING is going to ruin it...I honestly feel GSP or Silva will end up losing their upcoming fights... I hope they don't though because the fight would be epic...

I bet that Vitor will beat Silva while GSp beats Shield. If so,wouldn't GSP actually stay in WW while Silva goes down?

If GSP is moving up to fight Silva, I hope he does vacate the WW title and does it "properly" - i.e. gradually put the weight on and maybe have a fight against a top MW first... I think that was a big factor when BJ Penn lost to GSP the second time at WW (Penn was still the current LW champ). I know it's a "Super-fight" so will probably be made asap, but if GSP comes straight from WW to challenge Silva at MW - a weight where Silva has been fighting for years - it just seems he (Silva) would have a very big advantage...

mmmmm...I don't know.
Silva gains very little in this fight compared to GSP. If Silva wins....who cares...he is supposed to win against the lighter guy who is fighting at 185 FOR THE FIRST TIME....
if GSP wins..he wins the MW title, ends Silva's winning streak, and AUTOMATICALLY gets the #1 spot on all P4P lists....
very fun fight to think about. I just really hope it happens

Silva has more chance of throwing this superfight away than St-Pierre.
It's insane to be saying Vitor Belfort has a better chance of beating Anderson Silva than Jake Shields does of beating Georges St-Pierre, but GSP is scarily impressive. He beats fighters at their own strength and makes them look bad doing it.
EDIT: One thing I forgot to add, is that I'd like to see GSP vacate the Welterweight Championship AFTER a superfight with Silva, mainly so he can be a simultaneous two-division champion.

If GSP moves up, I hope he has to fight his way through the division. Im a big GSP fan, but putting him up against Anderson immediately isnt a good idea imo.

I said this on the show yesterday, if we're getting GSP VS Silva. I want GSP to drop his belt after he beats shields. I also want Silva to drop his belt regardless after the Belfort fight. GSP does not deserve to come up a weight and get an automatic title shot and then *PROBABLY* rule that division for another couple of years.
GSP vs Silva, no bells and whistles, no titles, just a fight to see who the best in the world really is.

^^^
That'd be good to see as well, and would be a good fight to be sold on the strengths of both guys ruling their respective divisions, not just being the champions of such divisions.

Okay, We all know that Georges St. Pierre will defeat Jake Shields and vacate his UFC Welterweight Championship to head up into the 185 pound Middleweight division where he will hopefully defeat Anderson Silva. But for the dream match of Georges St. Pierre vs Anderson Silva to happen we need Anderson Silva to also win his next fight which happens to be against Victor Belfort. It will definitely be interesting to see if Anderson Silva will lack his skills in his next fight unlike Georges St. Pierre who will end up destroying Jake Shields and hopefully entering the Middleweight Division to destroy Anderson Silva and his weak fighting skills as of late.
