In the summer of 1997 rumors were circulating that WWF veteran Bret "The Hitman" Hart was going to jump ship to rival company, World Championship Wrestling, when his contract was up in the fall of 1997. Although he was offered a multi-million dollar contract to join WCW, The Hitman decided that loyalty was worth more than money and resigned with the World Wrestling Federation. The Hitman's bitter feud with long-time rival Shawn Michaels came to a head at the Survivor Series in Bret's own backyard of Montreal, Canada.

**Main storylines heading into IYH: Armageddon**
--The night after Survivor Series, The Hart Brothers defeated Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels in a tag match. Due to a pre-match stipulation, The Harts earned a shot at the Tag Team Titles at IYH (if Austin/Michaels had won, Michaels would face Bret for the WWF Title and Austin would face Owen for the Intercontinental Title). --The Harts started a big time feud with the Legion of Doom for the Tag Titles. Five weeks before IYH:A, WWF Owner Mr. McMahon announced that Bret and Owen would be put the WWF Title and Intercontinental Title respectively, marking the first ever Match of Champions. Over the course of the next five weeks, The Harts and the Road Warriors faced off in a series of tag matches as well as singles matches, with each team getting victories. It's unclear which team is walking out with all the gold. --Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin rekindled their old feud on the 11-17 edition of RAW. Each man blamed each other for the loss against The Harts the week before. Soon enough the words turned to fists with Austin stomping a mudhole in HBK before the rest of D-Generation X came down to attack Austin. Four weeks before the PPV, Mr. McMahon declared that at IYH:A, Austin and Michaels would wrestle to determine the number one contender to the WWF Championship at the Royal Rumble. Every week Michaels got the upperhand over Austin due to the help of DX. Because of this, McMahon made the stipulation that if any member of DX interfered on the behalf of Michaels, he would be disqualified and Austin would face the WWF Champion at the Royal Rumble. --The feud between Kane and Mankind intensified when Kane drilled Mankind with the Tombstone on the steel ring steps. Mankind went on to challenge Kane to a Boiler Room Brawl match. --Sgt. Slaughter made a match between Shawn Michaels and Triple H for the European Championship on the 11-27 edition of RAW. But it turns out the two degenerates turned the match into a joke with Michaels laying down for Triple H resulting in a new champion. As punishment, Slaughter announced Ken Shamrock as the number one contender for the title. --The night after Survivor Series, Commissioner Slaughter announced that at IYH:A, the survivors of the elimination matches would face off in a battle royal with the winner entering at number thirty in the Royal Rumble match. --Tension grew in the ranks of The Nation of Domination as leader Faarooq and The Rock grew apart. Often, The Rock would take advantage of Faarooq in a tag team matches by capitalizing on Faarooq putting away opponents and tagging himself in to the get pinfall victories. --Goldust entered a feud with Steve Blackman. On 11-11 RAW, the two fought in an exhibition match which Blackman would win after Goldust was arguing with Marlena. After the match Goldust tried to pull Marlena up the entrance way but Blackman made the save. Over the next few weeks Goldust and Blackman went at it tooth and nail. Blackman challenged Goldust to a weapons match for IYH:A which Goldust gladly accepted.

Kane became distracted when the entrance of The Undertaker went off, but The Undertaker never showed up. --Mr. McMahon announced that the Legion of Doom will get their rematch for the Tag Titles on the final RAW of 1997 in one week. --In the tag team match between The Hart Brothers versus Faarooq and The Rock, The Rock tagged himself in after Faarooq hit the Dominator on to steal the win from Faarooq. During this, Bret was distracted by D-Generation X who were taunting him from the entrance ramp. --The British Bulldog issued a challenge to Triple H for the European Championship. Triple H accepted the challenge later in the night and Commissioner Slaughter made the match for next week. --The Godwinns attacked The Headbangers during a promo. --The New Age Outlaws challenged Vader to a Handicap match due to Vader winning the Survivor's Battle Royal the night before. Marlena left the arena in tears. It's noted that Goldust debuted a new, even more bizarre persona. --After his victory over Steve Blackman, Marc Mero began insulting Sable for no apparent reason. Blackman stepped in to save Sable, only for Mero to pull Sable by the hand forcefully from the ring.
