Back again with another interesting topic, maybe we can get some debate going. A lot of people are already jumping on GSP and claiming he's afraid of Anderson, I disagree, so I wrote a piece on it. Thoughts are always appreciated, and please click the link so I can get some views. ---------- Is Georges St. Pierre Afraid Of Anderson Silva? A New Interview Leads Some To Believe So, But I Disagree Article Posted: March 5th, 2011 | By: Oliver Saenz It’s one of the most-talked about “dream fights” in UFC history, and perhaps in all of MMA history. It would be an epic encounter between two of the most dominant UFC champions ever. Of course, I’m talking about UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre taking on UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. People have been debating this topic and all its many facets for months, and recently, George St. Pierre made some interesting comments about the potential match-up that has caused some cynics to already claim that GSP is afraid of “The Spider”. So what exactly was said? Let’s find out. Courtesy of Bloody Elbow, George St. Pierre recently said the following: “I don’t know (about fighting Anderson Silva)… Right now I’m focusing just on Jake Shields… It would take a long time (to add the size). Anderson Silva is a huge guy… He’s very big… I don’t know if I’m going to go up (to) 185… It’s a complete reorientation of my career. I have a lot to lose and I haven’t thought about it, I haven’t sat down to talk about it.” I’d like to start out by saying one thing plainly and clearly: I don’t think Georges St. Pierre is afraid of Anderson Silva. I think George St. Pierre respects Anderson Silva, and I think GSP is smart enough to know just how much he could lose if he were to come out on the wrong end of this mega-match. ---------- Read the rest here.

If GSP is afriad of Anderson, then Anderson is also afraid of GSP. Not full on afraid, but what I feel is more of a cautiously afraid. While both have faced the best competition in the world, these two are on a higher plain, and both would know they are in the cage with the best fighter theyve ever faced, and would know they would have to come into this fight better than ever and have to have a great gameplan and be prepared

Nice article, and I agree with you.

Anderson was willing to go down to 170 to fight GSP. Now, GSP is saying "I don't know about going to 185". Sounds odd.

I want to see how anorexic Anderson looks at 170. LMAO.

If Anthony Johnson can make 170, Anderson can.

I love how Anderson will STILL put the vaseline on his face onto his body.....while the cameras are on him! The first time he did this was after the whole 'greasegate' incident. Everyone was saying that was Andersons subtle way of calling GSP out. Not sure if it is true but it makes sense to me.
If Anderson were to win this fight the general consensus would be "big deal, he beat a naturally lighter fighter who didn't have enough prparation to go up to 185."....
but if GSP wins that basically leaves Anderson in limbo. Lets say Anderson gets completely dominated...does anyone think he will honestly go in back of the line to try and regain his title? He is 35....I just don't see it happening. At least if GSP loses, big deal, he can go back and fight some of the 185ers that he leapfrogged for the title shot.

I heard GSP walks around at 190-200, so its not really going to be much trouble for him to make 185 as opposed to 170, is it?

I don't think he's afraid either, more respectful of the talent Silva has. I can understand also that he's trying to fob the question off to concentrate on Jake Shields.

Good article. I think it's a massive ask of GSP to jump a division and face Silva - who has fought at LHW - in his first fight there. Why not make the fight at a catch-weight... something like 178lbs.? That way it's still the Super-Fight everyone wants - and both guys will be in "uncharted waters", weight-wise.

EVERY fighter should move up to test themselves. Anderson did it, BJ Penn has done it for years, but GSP wants a "Legacy", so why doesn't he?

EVERY fighter should move up to test themselves. ...not sure I agree with that, but: BJ is pretty unique when it comes to weight-jumping. But Anderson fought James Irvin and Forrest Griffin... it's hardly the same as GSP moving up to face Silva(!). I wonder how keen Silva would be to take on Shogun Rua or Jon Jones(?)... that's more of a comparison. Silva is a huge MW who can easily make/fight at LHW... if GSP does want to fight him, he should have a couple (or at least one) "testing the water" fights at MW first (against similar-type opponents that Silva fought at LHW).

This whole "Silva is a huge MW" is just bollocks. Even his manager said he was around 195 when he fought Chael. I can imagine Silva sort of bulking up when he fights at 205, but he only did that twice. There are guys cutting from 220 to make Middleweight, and even bigger guys making the cut to 170.
Silva vs. Shogun would be a great fight, but it doesn't have the same luster as GSP vs. Silva because both guys have dominated for so long and several people want to see it.

I don't agree with your logic at all. When Anderson was facing Forrest...nobody gave Anderson a chance. But now that the dust has settled everyone makes it seem like he was supposed to win. Anderson said he would go down to 170....he even entertained the idea of going up to heavyweight.

Nobody gave Anderson a chance? Really? From what I remember, most people were picking him to win... But regardless - while it was a very impressive win, it's not as though Silva stepped up to beat the current champion (and P4P great) in his first fight at the weight - which is what GSP would have to do. I'm just saying, like Silva did, let GSP fight a Top 5 guy in the division and "test the waters" first... to fight friggin' Anderson Silva in your very first fight at MW just seems like a huge ask. Yep... but he's stayed at MW, because that's where he's best. Nothing wrong with that.

Forrest was ONE fight removed from having the title. It was a huge win that people DID think Forrest was going to win, including Kliquid and a few others on the board. It even was so unbelievable to people, that a bunch of guys said Forrest threw the fight. Hah.

From the top of my head a bunch of members were saying Forrest would win by decision...a couple said submission...and we ALL remember Mr. Old School saying Forrest was going to knock anderson the f*** out. Anderson jumped up to LHW after Forrest just lost the title. He was ranked #2 or #3 . So your logic still doesn't make much sense.

And I bet there were a "few others" picking Silva too. But - the point of all this - Forrest was ranked about #3/4 at the time and it was Silva's second fight in the division - it seems only fair to let GSP have at least one fight in the Middleweight division before facing Silva... even if it's somone outside the top few. I know they probably won't do it (in case one of them loses), but if Silva beat Sonnen in a rematch and GSP moves up and impressively beat a top MW (Okami/Marquardt/Maia/Bisping), then the Super-Fight would be even bigger - and, importantly, seen as much more of an even/fair fight. As it stands now, I think Silva would be quite a big favorite.
