Episode #52: An extremely different regime? June 12th, 2007 - Philadelphia, PA. This week's broadcast opens with a tribute picture to Mr. McMahon, who is presumed dead following the shocking explosion that took place at the previous night's annual WWE Draft. Following that, the usual intro video opened this week's show. Joey Styles and Tazz opened this week's show, hyping it up as being the first anniversary show of ECW on Sci-Fi! They inform the viewer that tonight, the locker room have took it upon themselves in the absence of an authority figure to put on a show that represents what ECW is all about, with a triple threat match contested under Extreme Rules main eventing this evening, Balls Mahoney, The Sandman, and Tommy Dreamer clashing!
However, upon this being announced, Shane McMahon's theme plays to a chorus of heavy boo's from the Philadelphia crowd. He walks out to the ring, with a microphone in hand. He climbs in the ring, and begins to speak. The son of the presumed deceased chairman says that he isn't here to point the finger about who is responsible for the explosion, since he knows the ECW roster are all too stupid from the amount of hardcore violence inflicted on each other over the years, which gets a lot heat. He says he's here to inform everyone that he will be naming a new General Manager at the end of the night, and also - starting tonight - a tournament ending at Vengeance: Night of Champions for the ECW World Championship will begin! The first contest of the tournament - CM Punk battling Marcus Cor Von! The first break of the night begins following this.
commercialbreak
1) CM Punk vs. Marcus Cor Von - A solid opening bout for this edition of ECW, with these two going back and forth, the power of Cor Von going up against the speed and strikes of the 'Straight Edge Superstar' CM Punk. Punk had the advantage in the early going, but the strong offense of Cor Von soon caught up with him, and he was struggling. However, the support of the very vocal Philadelphia crowd was enough to bring him back into it, and Punk made a fight back. After hitting his backhand slap combination, several kicks, and the knee and bulldog, CM Punk nailed the Go to Sleep, which sealed his place in the second round of the ECW Championship tournament. Winner - CM Punk. |
CM Punk celebrated the huge win, rubbing his midsection, and pointing at the championship which had been placed at ringside before the match had begun. The commentators note that CM Punk hasn't had a one on one shot at the gold yet, and should he win the tournament, thats just what he'll have. They hype the night's main event, the triple threat Extreme Rules match, with Balls Mahoney, The Sandman, and Tommy Dreamer clashing in thier trademark match. Commercials then begin.
commercialbreak ECW returns with the theme of the 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit playing through the arena to a tremendous ovation! He walks out from behind the curtain, with a microphone in hands, and climbs in the ring. He says that he feels like he has come back to one of his many homes by being drafted to Tuesday night, saying he has some great memories of making a name for himself in America through ECW. He says that his only aims while on ECW are two things - One: to carry on entertaining his fans, and Two: to win the ECW World Championship! At this point, Matt Striker's theme plays, and the 'Extreme Educator' made his way out. He says that if Benoit was intelligent, he'd know only one man was going to be the next ECW World Champion, and thats Matt Striker. He then tells Benoit that they have a match scheduled in the tournament next week, but they can bring it forward a week just so Matt Striker can embarrass Chris Benoit in the home of ECW, Philadelphia. Benoit says he accepts, before vowing to make Striker tap, or if he doesn't, snap! The crowd cheers, as the match gets underway.
2) Chris Benoit vs. Matt Striker - A good second contest here, and another great contest for the ECW World Championship. Benoit and Striker had a good amount of chemistry despite only working together for the first time tonight, and managed to produce a good match, which the Philadelphia fans enjoyed. Striker played a cocky heel, proclaiming himself to be 'better than ECW' whenever he could, but in the end, his words couldn't protect him, as Benoit spun out of Striker's attempt of the Golden Rule, and locked in the once again dubbed 'Crippler' Crossface. Striker tried not to tap, but the pressure increased to the point where he screamed out in pain, the snap Benoit had mentioned had arrived! Striker tapped desperately, ending the match, and sending Benoit into Round Two! Winner - Chris Benoit. |
Benoit celebrated the victory, having his arm raised by the ref, and beating his chest and pointing around the arena at all the Philadelphia fans. Chris Benoit had won the right to join CM Punk in Round Two of the ECW World Championship tournament! The last break of the night then came in.

3) Balls Mahoney vs. The Sandman vs. Tommy Dreamer - The Main Event of tonight that was contested under Extreme Rules was a great one, and the crowd loved it! Mahoney made his way out first with a personalised steel chair to chants of 'Balls, Balls!' Sandman entered next through the crowd with his Singapore Cane, and a cans of beer, and finally Dreamer entered with his shopping cart full of weapons. The match itself was a complete spotfest, with lots of weapon shots flying - trash cans, chairs, singapore canes - and the arena being utilized, the shopping cart being sent into the crowd barricade, the ring and heads being banged off the stairs and announce table. The finish came after two tables were thrown into the mix, and Balls Mahoney was set up on the top rope. Sandman nailed went for a superplex, but Tommy Dreamer came up from behind, and nailed down Sandman in an electric chair drop as Sandman nailed the Superplex on Balls, with Sandman and Balls both crashing through tables! Dreamer crawled over and covered Balls to take the win in the exciting main event! Winner - Tommy Dreamer. |
Dreamer celebrates the hard fought victory, beating his chest, and shouting 'ECW!', a chant breaking out. However, the chant ends when Shane McMahon's theme plays to a lot of boo's, and the son of Vince McMahon makes his way out. He says its about time the 'Land of Extreme' calmed down a little bit, so tonight, he's given a sensible man the job of being the new ECW General Manager. With that, the theme of William Regal plays, and the new ECW General Manager makes his way out to a mixed reaction. Regal stands and looks around at his new surroundings, as the first year of ECW ends, and the second year begins.

ECW on Sci-Fi: Tuesday 12th June 2007...I suppose this is about the right time to start in an ECW diary, but it's pretty hard to make things different I will say that. Disappointed by the fact WWE 2010 isn't going anywhere now, that had so so much potential. Shane McMahon introducing the show and mentioning Mr McMahon's limousine explosion made sense. The ECW World Championship tournament was logical, nothing changes as we prepare the semi-finals and finals for the tournament leading into Vengeance: Night of Champions event. I hope that Chris Benoit doesn't die though. CM Punk beating Marcus Cor Von is a solid opening contest, could have gone either way, in fact I'd like to see Cor Von with an ECW title shot in the future. Punk winning was more logical though. Chris Benoit's promo was pretty good, I liked it and how Matt Striker matched it. No Elijah Burke? Weird. Still think this should have main evented. Nice hardcore but dire main event with Tommy Dreamer, the only talented ECW Original left that's worth a mention winning against The Sandman and Balls Mahoney. William Regal as General Manager is cool. I hope to see a feud with Regal and Punk down the road though. A decent start show.

OMGZ HU IS CRIZ BENWAH!?!
Shane opening the show is interesting. Can't wait to see who the GM will be, though I predict it'll probably just be Shane himself. Here's hoping Punk goes all the way in the tournament.
Glad to see Punk win. Cor Von isn't big enough nor does he have the same potential as Punk.
Benoit vs. Striker sounds awesome. I hope you do a lot with Striker. Predicting a Punk/Benoit final.
The main event was very well written. Sounded like a hell of a battle. Dreamer winning was probably the right choice, as he is the bigger star out of all three.
Whilst Regal is a great choice for GM because of his character, he is winding down his career at this point, and should be spending his last few years in the ring rather than as an authority figure. I believe there are far more fitting candidates to be GM. It probably would have been better to have Regal as ECW's top heel.
