How is it that Bruno Sammartino held the belt for 8 years..., Backlund held the belt for years, Hogan held the belt for years all without suffering a major injury.
It seems that nowadays there are so many wrestlers that are getting hurt. Edge & Batista recently had to relinquish titles due to injuries. Not to mention the recent injuries of Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Mr. Kennedy, Triple H, Bobby Lashley & Gregory Helms....and more I'm probably forgetting.
Just weird that we NEVER heard anything about injuries back in the old days. Was it because of kayfabe or just because wrestlers were more careful with each other back in the 70s & 80s?
It just seemed that Bret Hart, Jake Roberts, Ted Dibiase, Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Tito Santana, Greg Valentine, Ric Flair, Harley Race and all the other old school favorites wrestled year after year after year without taking time off for injury.
But nowadays, every time you log onto wwe.com, we are hearing about another wrestler taking the trip to Birmingham, AL to examine the extent of their injury.
Is the time these guys spend in the gym making their bodies injury prone, are they wrestling a more reckless style or were the stars of yesterday just plain TOUGHER.

The style now is far more demanding and hard hitting, also the fact that they're working an insane amount of dates with this style makes it a lot harder to stay injury free.

The ammount of time they spend on the road doing shows these days contributes to a lot of the injuries.

The schedule isn't the difference, because most old school territories worked 3-4 nights a week just like the current WWE crew does. The following could all be a part of the reason:
-- The style today is higher-impact -- Low-risk holds used to be enough to pop a crowd (figure four, body slam, clothesline, etc.) so a banged-up wrestler could still work a decent match without worrying about getting hurt much worse than he already was -- Fewer wrestlers took steroids, painkillers, and other drugs (except alcohol & weed) in the 1970s than today. Steroids make you more prone to muscle tears and stuff like that, while painkillers make it possible for you to work a high-impact style when your body is probably on the verge of needing surgery (so a current WWE wrestler with a minor injury will end up with a major injury by numbing the pain and working another six months on it) -- They probably did a better job hiding injuries back then due to the style of matches, the fact that wrestling aired on tape delay, etc. Sammartino could have been out for 4-6 weeks at a timee without the TV audience knowing the difference because the TV shows were taped weeks in advance anyway. -- Just like in the 1980s, I don't think it was super-common for the champions (Bruno, Dory Funk, Backlund, etc.) to wrestle every week on TV. So if they were hurt, the only shows it would affect would be house shows.

There is a multitude of reasons, they've been pointed out. The schedule is a million times more demanding and the physicality is amped up tons and tons. It makes sense.

Actually they have less dates now.
Today 1 wrestler works about 3 to 4 times a week, while in the 80s it was 6 to 8 times a week.
Its all due to the fact that wrestlings been on TV for so long, they've had to change their style to a more fast paced and hard hitting style, you can no longer sit on a headlock for 5 minutes or you get the "Orton Treatment" from fans.

Wrestling is far more demanding nowadays. Go & watch wrestling from the "Good Old Days" & you'll see hour long headlocks or bear hugs, hell a drop kick was once considered a high spot. A wrestler today is doing more risky moves & wrestling in a more aggressive style meaning they are far more open to be injured
