Does anybody know why they decided to give him the nwa title? Wasn't he a mid-carder before he beat Ric Flair? What did you guys think of him as champion(for those who got to witness his reigh)?

His winning the belt was a last minute booking decision by the committee due to losing their original choices for successors. Magnum T.A., the original choice, was forced out of in-ring competition following a car accident and Buddy Landel was fired for drug use on the day he was to win the title. He held it for less than 2 months before losing it back to Flair.

I thought he was a bad choice for champion. As soon as he won the title he took a 40 day vacation, which infuriated Ric Flair, because he wanted the title back as soon as possible.

Ronnie Garvin, after viewing his 1985/6 NWA work, deserved an NWA World title reign at some point in his career. Although the reign he got sucked total ass. Basically Flair wanted to lose the title and regain it at Starrcade 1987 and Ron Garvin was picked because no wanted to be a lame duck champion for 40 days.
IMO Barry Windham should've won the title against Flair during thier classic Worldwide match back on 1/13/87 and then lost it to Flair back at Starrcade that year. That would've ended up being a great reign with awesome matches and angles in the company and it would've had a great blowoff in the cage in Chi-Town.
