I Have been Watching anything Legends almost fanatically latly, Ive seen a lot of worries about the Legends Series but i dont think theres any need to worry.
Obviously The Point of Concern for Legends was 2 packs being scrapped and the series going from 6 - 4 per wave and talk going from Everyone having at least one figure to more strategic choices needing to be made.
Well , What I think is we'll see the line go back up to 6 in the near future..... Im not sure when but i think Legends popularity is on the Rise
First , Heres my opinion on what hurt mattel ,
- 2 Packs, Obviously Some Bad Choices to Start. They should have probably focused on 2 tag teams per wave and put out some bigger names to start
- Less Marketable Names/Costumes , If they had started the way jakks did, with some Big names, then the series would have picked up faster i think. Were at Series 6 now, and still Theres no Elite undertaker Legends in the direct line, No HBK, no Bret hart, No Andre, Honestly i love 90% of the choices made, but you can see how that could have hurt sales
- Mattels New to the Game, Over stocking, Understocking, Knowledge of WWE, good choices/bad choices ... The First Year for Mattel was a learning Curve
But my biggest point yet, It Seemed to me like mattel kind of assumed people would gladly pick up their Legends collection where jakks left off, which for some Die Hards is the Case 100%. Personally i didnt make the switch till i seen Legends 5, It was hard to start a collection for me without the star power of hogan, taker, hart , warrior, savage, andre etc
And it seems like this month theres 2-3 New Threads every week About someone making the switch from jakks to mattel, and another 2 threads about someone just starting mattel from scratch.
Not to mention it seems like every thread i see about someone buying from L5 Has Bought the Whole Set, Which i think goes to show how Awesome the set is , not to mention the popularity of the line improving. Legends 5 is going to do very well in stores
Anyways, i know this is speculation, but i really seen this fiasco with legends coming with some of the line ups that came out, i think mattels got a better grasp on the wrasslin business now And with More star Power from Savage and Warrior , i Think we'll be seeing 6 per wave by 7 or 8 , at latest series 9 .
any thoughts?

The First Year for Mattel was a learning Curve I think this is huge, but I also think they have made some great strides forward after seeing what worked and what didn't work. I think now that they have their rookie year out of the way, and they see what the fans do/don't like, they will make this line much better.

With an inevitable Legends release of Bret Hart, Undertaker, HBK, Andre and maybe Hogan? to go with endless possibilities of Warrior and Savage + mattel's first year experience I think sales should keep the line strong.
One thought for why we haven't seen a classic taker and hbk sooner may be because we got them in EG in a "classic" attire + they both already had so many recent releases that mattel didn't want to saturate the market.
I am curious to how they handle Savage and Warrior. They have countless attires that will sell however, I think there is a fine line in order to capitalize on sales with the not so diehards by spacing out their releases a little but not too much.

I think a big reason for the Legends lines sluggish sales has been the price. As a classic/legends only collector that has been my biggest issue. This is not a Jakks vs Mattel comment but it went from $12 to $16 for singles and $22 to $30 for the two packs. It has made me cherry pick instead of getting everything. It would be a good idea if Mattel looked at maybe shaving a little off that price. (reducing packaging...that bubble is HUGE, etc..) Just my two cents...

Yes Mattel costs more, but you're getting more. You get more articulation and scale. That's like calling a four cylinder engine a better price than an a V6. It is cheaper, but you get less. I would NOT trade the elite articulation and scale that Jakks mostly left out for cheaper price tags. This is why I don't (and never did) collect Jakks. As far as packaging is concerned, I wouldn't care if they came in bubble wrap, but there are MOC collectors who love lavish packaging. I can pay for that if they can pay for articulation and scale.

Well , What I think is we'll see the line go back up to 6 in the near future..... Im not sure when but i think Legends popularity is on the Rise any thoughts? First, I too have been watching feverishly for any legends news, and the reduction in the lines was a bit scary to hear, however, I also think the line is in good shape and may rebound in the future. I think Mattel discovered something brilliant when they put two Kerry Von Erichs in the upcoming legends series, and bumped their set from 4 to 5 to accommodate it. I can see Mattel doing that again in the future; Mattel will release their base number (4) plus a variant or repaint. I can see Mattel releasing a 90s HBK along with Rocker Shawn Michaels in the upcoming series. Perhaps in the following legends line we'll get four new figures and another variant, such as the highly craved camo Sarge or WWF LOD. We'll see. But Mattel already offers more than Jakks did throughout its line by giving us scale and elite articulation (plus far superior belts!). There really is no need to let whatever Jakks did in the past keep Mattel from doing what we all know is going to be better anyway. It's time Mattel became it's own line and just forget that Jakks even existed (except to steal good ideas or learn from mistakes). That's just my opinion.

I hope you are right. I was dreading the switch from Jakks after having such a great run. But the new body style and great accessories have really won me over. Hopefully this pics up steam and we get our tag teams back.

I think the Sales of Legends 5 will Push Mattel to upsize the line with more figures, Really the price doesnt bother me one bit. I know that im paying for the most premium product that any wrestling fig collector has seen yet. Ive Collected LJNs, Hasbros, Some WCW figs, Jakks BCA's , Jakks Classic Line and i think its hard to ask that elite mattel figures be priced the same.
For the extra price we get Elite Articulation, Scale and Accuracy and Every Figure comes with accessories. Thats far beyond worth the price to me, I Wouldnt Pay $10 for basic figures personally , they're almost barbie like to me, and i recall the jakks csda line and deluxe line were more expensive as well.
I Really think Mattel jumped the gun Bringing the series down to 4 and eliminating the 2 packs, the fact is even jakks classic line didnt have as many collectors the first year as they did in the last, obviously right , but its a gradual climb, jakks started with 6 powerhouse classics so they had a better advantage.
but mattel has a better grasp on this now and i think sales of legends 5 will show them the markets out there and show them we do want legends!! They just need to give us the right legends to make the line stay successful !
I would really like to see Andre, Taker, Hbk, Bret, Hogan in the Legends line Soon, Not DM, To Really Boost the Sales of the Whole line.

I have collected every line aswell...I' 27 so I basically grew up with Wrestling figures, and I think this is the best line to date ...so far. The figures are far better than any other series IMO

I agree this is the best line thus far, and I would love to see Andre, Undertaker, Bret, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, etc in the legends line. If they could put two or three all-time greats in each series along with classic middle-carders like Big Boss Man, I don't see how they can fail so long as they're smart with the attires.

To each his own, my favourite so far has been the volkoff sheik two pack and the Piper Orton Pipers pit two pack, I think I am COMPLETELY alone on that though. I started my collection with the Volkoff two pack and the Iron Shiek Legends two figure and then just started buying all of them because they are amazing!!!

I really hope you're right and the Legends do go back up to 6. The key is Mattel stepping up some of the names. The one positive thing I can say is I love some of the obscure characters they've brought out like heel Jake and short haired Rick Rude. This Legends line could go on for years if they listen to fans of the line and continue to sign up names fans want to buy.
