We have all heard the story that Lex Luger was going to win the WWE title at Wrestlemania X. Well something I have always wondered is was he going to still have the belt at the end of the event. So he beats Yoko in the first match but was the plan all along for Bret to beat Luger in the final match or was Lex going to beat Bret as well?
My own personal opinion is that Bret was always going to leave Wrestlemania X as the WWE champion I mean lets face it the work the guy did during 1993 was excellent. So what are you guys thoughts on the mater do you think Lex would have left mania champ if he could have kept his mouth shut or was Hitman always leaving the garden with the title.

Taking the belt off Bret would've been a serious mistake. First off, the '94 Rumble proved that Luger wasn't really main event material. Thought that ending was horrid. Secondly, Bret was the man at the time. Losing the belt then would lose him some crediability and that's why they knew Hitman was walking out WrestleMania X as champ.

If Luger would have won, I think Bret Hart vs. Yoko would have been first on the card with Yoko winning and then Luger beating Yoko at the end to capture the WWF title.
Thank god that didn't happen.

I think Luger would have left with it...
And I kind of wished he had, I was a big fan of his at the time...
Thoguh in all reality, they messed up by not giving him the Belt at Summerslam. He lost all his momentum by not winning it there.

Luger simply wasn't over with the fans as much as Bret was - booking wise it made sense for bret to be champion - Vince realised you cant stuff the lex express down everyones throats and expect them to like it!

I am biased, but still, Luger was way over at Summerslam, they should have given him the belt there. Bret was a lot better than Lex, but people wanted Lex to win the belt at Summerslam.

Either way Bret Hart was guaranteed to leave WrestleMania X as the WWF Champion. The original plan was to have Lex Luger defeat Yokozuna for the title, then lose it to Bret later in the night.

The story I heard was that Luger was supposed to walk out of Mania 10 as champ. I heard before Mania, they even already taped an interview with Luger as champion, even walking out with the belt at a live event. The interview was to be aired after Mania. But Luger apparently got drunk at a bar, blabbed to patrons about how he was gonna win the title, so Vince changed plans.
I agree with others, though. If Luger ever was gonna win the title, it should have been at SummerSlam 93. He never had more momentum than then.
What do you think would have happened if Luger had come out of Mania as champ? A Luger/Bret fued? A maybe there would never have been that classic Bret/Owen feud.

I've always felt like Vince never had enough confidence in Lex even though he pushed him huge with the Lex Express and all heading into Summerslam 1993. What other reason could there be for having him NOT walk out of SS '93 as WWF champion? I will never understand the booking for that main event as it would've been the smartest move at the time and Bret, the only other challenger at the time, wasn't going to be leaving any events as champion until seven months later at WrestleMania X. I know that Vince supposedly promised Luger the belt and kept him hanging on for months and months until the incident before 'Mania X took place. Maybe that was just the excuse Vince was looking for seeing as how fast the ending to 'Mania was changed in one night. Also, Bret was obviously the better guy to go with so in retrospect I believe Vince made the right decision. Luger left for WCW in '95 and Bret stayed with the company.......until leaving for WCW in '97. Regardless, I don't know if Lex would have left WM that night as champion, but if the actions of previous months were any indication, I would say probably not.

Lex was pushed so hard but the fans never took to him, Vince always saw him as being the NEXT Hulk Hogan but despite all the money he threw at the lex Express he just never got over with the fans. If he had he'd have won the strap at SS as several here have said, the win but no strap really cost him.
However the way I'd always heard the story was the lex was scheduled to leave the show with the strap

Can somone please explain the whole SummerSlam '93 to me, I mean I know Lex won via Count-Out, but I never watched then, and even if I had, I would have only been 1 and a 1/2, lol

There was a Lex Express bus that was doing a tour of USA promoting him as the next big American hero. If I remember his title shot against Yokozuna was billed as his one shot at the strap. Him winning by countout I suppose was meant to keep lex strong as he won, but build up his chase for the title. The problem was a lot of fans expected him to win the strap here (sim ilar to Goldberg in the Elimination Chamber really) it just felt like his time especially with the huge push. As a result when he didn't win the belt a lot of fans felt very deflated and turned the back on him. That was shown at the Rumble when fans cheered when Bret was announced the winner but booed when it was said Luger had won and againwhen it was announced they were co-winners.

Luger's title win would have been the main event. I mean think about it, it makes a hell of a lot more sense for Perfect to screw Bret out of the title than it did for Perfect to screw Luger. (Albeit Luger knocked him out the year before at WM IX, but Bret/Hennig's history far surpasses that)

It wouldn't make much sense for Perfect to screw either of them over, really, seeing as he stayed inactive. Its just a heel turn outside of actually wrestling, I suppose. Now, somebody correct me here, but wasn't there some MAJOR changes in the Wrestlemania X card? Like, Undertaker was supposed to win the belt from Yoko, lose it to Ludvig Borga (yes, that Ludvig Borga), who would then lose it to Lex at Wrestlemania? All the while, Owen/Bret was set to happen. All this changed when Undertaker was injured, and then again when Lex blabbed. I swear I've heard that before.

I think he was taking time off to heal from an injury. Borga was injured as well, which pretty much killed any chance of a push for him like there was supposed to have been.

Borga was being groomed for a main event heel run as WWF champ at the time. They made him look strong by killing Jannetty in 4 minutes at Summerslam (the same event where Luger faced Yoko for the belt). Then two months later, they decided Borga should go over Tatanka, thus ending his 2-year undefeated streak, to further push him as a monster heel force.
At Survivor Series, Borga was the last member of the Foreign Fanatics to be eliminated by Luger. They did this to keep Lex looking strong (which was a MUST coming off of the Summerslam debacle) and further his rivalry with Ludvig.
By the time 1994 rolled around, Borga injured his ankle at an untelevised match against Rick Steiner, putting him out of commish. He was never seen again in the WWF.
