I was told by the man himself, the main Ringside admin account to create my own thread to discuss this and to leave it out of the Punk figure thread. So here it is. I think Mattel lied to us and wanted hype for this figure. proof? So rather than believe they concocted this whole marketing strategy, you'll believe that a couple of kids on an internet forum got the WWE and Mattel to change their minds?

Its a shame because now to get the figure, you have to pay atleast 10 dollars more than you would if it was a regular elite at retail.

I don't really know what to say about a possible conspiracy. To play devil's advocate, it being limited to 5,000 is a high amount, and it's unusual to see another RSC exclusive 2 months after the other one. Couldn't it have just been in production, WWE tells them to axe it, so then they shop it around to RSC, since they already started making them?

I don't care anymore. I'm pretty much over this figure.

In my opinion...
I think the exclusive was revealed on accident. They most likely still needed final approval from WWE. And instead of announcing it early they tried to pretend it was a canceled figure.

My take is that Punk changed his look too fast and WWE didn't want it on toy shelves anymore since it was outdated so it was pulled but RSC saw the demand for it and wanted it as an exclusive and WWE agreed.
Punk is a popular wrestler and having it as an RSC exclusive was the best way to get this released. Our only chance at getting "unpopular" figures at retail is RSC.

I find it interesting that this figure's hype included "finally", he's wearing USA GIJoe Camo gear, and it comes the day after we ended Osama... Creepy... The GI Joe attire was different.

No one knows or will ever know what mattel's intent was. Also I don't really care.

so instead of paying 15 dollars for an outdated figure now all you kiddies can pay 30 dollars to get it shipped to your house. yep certainly does sound like Mattel and RSC are playing you guys but "ZOMG ITS THE PUNK WE DEMANDED! GIVE ME TWO!"

Not a stretch by any means imo. That being said, it really doesn't matter. All you can do at this point is tip your hat to Mattel for strategic marketing if that is in fact the case. I also think that the idea of Mattel accidentally displaying the exclusive so they needed to cover their ass isn't that big of a stretch either.
Again, it really makes no difference. This is the first Mattel exclusive I actually have interest in buying. CM Punk is the internet messiah, who better than Punk to be an internet exclusive? Glad we are getting it, wish it was retail price though. Begs the question, is it better to pay double or go without?

Why do people want it anyways? It can't wrestle with a broken arm, so you can't play with it. I mean, as an Accessorie the Mask/Arm Sling looks awesome but... I would of preferred him dressed. Ala. SES Outfit when he was feuding with Big Show. (Hand tattoo's included). Umm, what?

Mattel doesn't have the time to waste conspiring against consumers, especially the small portion of their demographic that this community represents.
I think they were guaging consumer reponse for sure and were hoping for a positive reaction and large committment from an online etailer, but that's strategic marketing, not conspiring.
Let's not make more of this than what it is: a great way for the fans to get a cool product we all want.

Agreed; they dont set out to have this entire scheme against consumers. Do they mislead? Yes. Are they kinda jerkish? Sure.
Overall I will be purchasing this figure as I only collect Jericho and Punk stuff. Some folks are complaining over the price point but my logic is: if you want it you'll pay for it. It isn't too unreasonable and if you want the figure, fork out the extra $10, if not, no need to worry about it.

And instead of announcing it early they tried to pretend it was a canceled figure. This. You guys are WAAAY overthinking it. And I thought I was up to eyeballs in Bin Laden conspiracy thoeries the last few days. My assumption was that it was mistakenly put out on display. And once we started going batty about it on the board, the Mattel guys had to come up with an explanation. But I hardly think that RSC and Mattel felt that based on the handful of people on this board who were psyched for the figure, they'd sell 5,000 of them.

Just because they're pro-wrestling figures doesn't mean every "controversial" thing that happens is a work.
As soon as the mask gimmick started, Mattel probably went to work on a figure representing it because it was so different. By the time they got them into production, WWE (Vince?) said "too old, put something newer in" or even "Punk may be leaving, hold off on Punk figures until we find out what his contract status is". Anyone on this board that follows wrestling at all knows how much Vince and WWE change their minds on things.
It's likely that Mattel just didn't want all the work and resources that went into this figure to go to waste, so they negotiated with WWE to get it released as an internet exclusive. That way, the hardcores that actually would still want the figure can have it, the work isn't wasted, and the figure isn't as "public" as it would be in retail, so if Punk leaves, WWE isn't broadly selling his merch. The timing makes sense that WWE would ask Mattel to hold off on his merch, but they would have been deep into production on this piece. They may not have even been told until the week of the show when the figure was displayed.
This "conspiracy" idea is silly. Yeah, I could see how they could do something like that to create hype or buzz, but who would really be buzzed and hyped by this? Five people on the WFigs message board? Where else in the toy industry is there a clamoring for "Masked CM Punk" after he was "dramatically pulled last minute from the showroom floor"? Anyone on this board who was into this figure would pre-order DAY ONE if it was announced on here, point-blank, with no "last minute cancellation" drama. It's too much trouble to go through just to hype MAYBE 5-10 people into buying it that wouldn't have otherwise. If it were meant as an exclusive all along, then why wouldn't they just say "the figure has been canceled from wave X" or "we have no plans to release this figure at retail because it's out-dated" instead of claiming word came from WWE?
Mattel has said time and time again to let them know what we want. There was strong demand for this figure to be released as an exclusive and Mattel, who famously monitors feedback on these forums, were probably already thinking it would be worth their time to try and release it as an exclusive. OCCAM'S RAZOR, FOLKS.

So rather than believe they concocted this whole marketing strategy, you'll believe that a couple of kids on an internet forum got the WWE and Mattel to change their minds? Yes, I am more inclined to believe that rather than to blatantly call mattel liars. Especially when: A. The explanation they provided for why it was cancelled is consistent with the past practices of the wwe, mattel and other similar companies. B. It was a lot more than just a couple of people. It was an approximately 25 page thread with hundreds of unique users attempting to make their voice heard. C. It is a proven fact that mattel representatives monitor these boards. D. It was explicitly suggested in that thread that it be released as an exclusive. None of this is solid proof (that would be impossible to produce) but it is irrefutable evidence that supports mattel's claim. So, the question remains, where's your proof? The mere existence of the figure does nothing to support your theory as we've seen images of prototypes for figures that never saw the light of day, surface many times in the past. Never before had there been such an overwhelming outpouring of support. It actually makes me curious as to what unreleased figs may have come to fruition had we given the same effort that we did in the case of the punk fig.
