Apparently there's no real rivalry between them, but Greoning sent a letter thanking Trey and Matt for ripping on Family guy so he obviously doesn't genuinly like his shows.
Comic Book Guy's comment certainly applies to seth's shows.

Actually, Groening and MacFarlane are good friends. MacFarlane voiced a character in one of the Futurama movies.

I seem to remember a Peter Griffin cameo in one of the Treehouse of Horror episodes. The one with all the Homer clones.

I think Groening is jealous of MacFarlane's success but their "rivalry" seems like a friendly one.

Yup, when it was still a quality show... unfortunately the Simpsons has sucked for 10+ years...

Yup, when it was still a quality show... unfortunately the Simpsons has sucked for 10+ years... Yet they still get good ratings and are a larger part of the world wide culture than Family Guy.

The worst episode of the Simpsons has more thoughtful writing than the "best" episode of Family Guy.
Groening has no reason to be jealous, Family is not and never will be as huge (or as good) as Simpsons.

Yup, when it was still a quality show... unfortunately the Simpsons has sucked for 10+ years... Pray tell what exactly does Groening have to be jealous of? He created a cultural phenomenon and despite the quality of his show noticably dropping since the 90's still produces a much more entertaining show than any of MacFarlane's shows... Family Guy has been consistently garbage since it came back from cancellation

I love how everyone says their opinions on Simpsons being better written or funnier than Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show and try to pass it as fact.
My opinion Simpsons are just horrible now
American Dad > Family Guy > Simpsons > Cleveland Show

My opinion Simpsons are just horrible now American Dad > Family Guy > Simpsons > Cleveland Show There's not liking something and then saying it's awful. You can not like something, that's perfectly fine and that's an opinion. But to say that it's horrible well that's a statement and that's where I can argue that you are wrong...
