Just got the recent Fright Night 2 on Bluray for my collection coming in the mail as I was a huge fan of the 80s version but the remake with farrell kinda sucked no pun intended but if I recall 2 was very well done and only had one part I disliked . I actually liked the remake. It was fun. The original is good, but if you revisit it, I don't think it's that great. I enjoy it a lot, but it's more noteworthy for it's effects than anything. The remake was enjoyable. Anton did a good job, Farrell was having fun, and Tenant was a blast. I honestly put the two films about even. Yeah the FN remake did nothing for me even though I thought they set up a great premise being in Las Vegas and casting Mclovin as Evil ed and Anton as charlie but after the first half hour it fell flat for me but I was really shocked how well FN2 was and Im still waiting on it in the mail . The original FN is so beloved as it was a surprise hit back in the 80s and its one of my favorite semi funny horror movie and its up their with Texas Chainshaw , Jaws , Phatasm and the 1922 classic Nosferatu .

Watched Devils due last week. Really enjoyed it. Also saw a movie called HUSH. More suspense than horror I guess but I really enjoyed it.

I just watched the original Hitcher movie again the other night and wow what a movie. Easily one of my faves if not most fave horror movie. Some people consider this more of a thriller more than horror but its always been a horror movie for me simply because Rutger Hauer scares the hell out of me lol. The filming location, score and the intimate cast just make this such a great movie that you can watch again and again and it always leave you on the edge of your seat.

Don't Breathe was ing intense. One of my favorite films of the year, hands down, if you like horror/thrillers, go see it this weekend. It's really good. Don't want to say too much about it, but man, what a movie. What do you guys think has been the top 2-3 scariest movies of the last 5 years or so. I mean actually mess with your mind, truly keep you up at night kind of horror. Would love to get a good list going. Thanks! Don't Breathe that comes out this weekend is great. Saw an advanced screening of it tonight. It's a twist on the home invasion film, where the people invading the home start to get hunted by the person who lives there. It does a great job of making them a bit unlikable since they are criminals, but also sympathetic because of why they are doing it. It gets to be a very intense, edge of your seat film, the camerawork really brings you in and makes you feel trapped, and like you can't make a sound. See it in the theater. The Loved Oneswww.imdb.com/title/tt1316536/ A bit silly and hammy at points, but legitimately disturbing as well. The type of thing that makes your skin crawl, imagining if the same situation happened to you. It Followswww.imdb.com/title/tt3235888/It is cheap, as it was a low budget indie horror film that blew up but It Follows is really solid. The final act is a little weak, but the rest of the movie makes it worth it. Essentially this otherworldly type being tries to kill you once you've been infected, and it can take any form, a nice old lady, a relative, you don't know who it could be, except that it doesn't speak. It walks, so you can outrun it easily, but it literally never stops following you, so you can't really stop or sleep or anything like that. Good sense of paranoia. Oculuswww.imdb.com/title/tt2388715/A film that seems dumb at first, being about a haunted mirror that causes hallucinations and other strange events in adults, this movie actually really worked, telling a creepy psychological story. What makes this film really interesting is the dual story told through flashbacks, 11 years apart. This is one of the movies I thought would suck and was a huge pleasant surprise. There are a few for you.

"Last Shift" currently on Netflix is hands down one of the best horror movies from start to finish I've seen in ages. It's just everything you want out of a horror movie. Go out of your way to watch it ASAP.

Do yourself a favor and skip Rob Zombie's "31". It's an atrocity. Zombie was once a promising up and coming horror director but his movies have gotten worse and worse. This was straight to video quality. A real piece of crap.

So who LOVES horror movies?
The discussion to be had here is...I LOVE horror but I think 95% of it is terrible/only in 'guilty pleasure' territory. It's only once in a great while I see a horror movie that is 'good' and even then once in a blue moon I see one that is actually truly scary for me. Anybody else feel like this? If not, why?

I can count the number of actually "scary" or "horrific" horror movies I've seen on two hands. I agree with you. Sometimes I can be in the mood for the classics, but most of the time I want a challenge. And those movies are few and far between. Don't get me started on the endless list of B, C, and Z horror movies on Netflix and Hulu. They're a waste of time and energy. I love horror movies too, but even some of the good ones aren't really scary. They're more "dark" and "atmospheric." It Follows and The Witch come to mind. I loved both, but was never scared while watching either of them. You can enjoy the camp and gore in some movies, but if you really want HORROR, I've learned you have to search it out.

I made the mistake of watching 'We Are Still Here' because of someone's 'Rotten Tomatoes' recommendation and I was baffled. The things people consider 'good' sometimes really make me wonder if I have something wrong with me. It Follows is one of the closest I've come to getting there, thought that was great. I haven't seen The Witch as I missed it in the theater and am still kind of sour about that, but I'll check it out soon.

Agree with all of the last few comments above. But I found a gem - Mothman Prophecies. Ashamed to admit I've still never seen it, up until tonight. Definitely has me not wanting to go to sleep.

I forgot about Mothman Prophecies! I liked it. Very creepy movie. I read the book it was based on after seeing the movie. Cool paranormal stuff. If anyone sees Blair Witch, please post review. I'm considering seeing it this week.

Blair Witch 2016 Date Watched: September 16, 2016 Format: Theater
Note this review may contain minor spoilers, but nothing plot specific.
A quick note before I go into the review. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of found footage films. There are exceptions to that rule, I do like several a lot, but generally, I feel it to be a cheap, lazy way to make a film these days. That being said, I did really enjoy the original Blair Witch Project a lot. I wouldn't consider myself a mega fanatic over the film but I do really like it. So that's my mindset coming into this film. I was actually really looking forward to this one.
And it's ok. Decent. But nothing more than that. It doesn't achieve the quality of the original in any way, shape or form. As far as found footage films go, it's fairly competently made, but it's also incredibly frustrating at times.
The best thing going for it is that the characters aren't all unlikable jerks. They're poorly developed and not very interesting, but you don't hate them, so that's a good step. Doubling the character count over the original film really hurts, because in 90 minutes you just can't develop 6 characters. There are some scenes at the very beginning that are good, but once they get into the woods, there simply aren't really any meaningful conversations that tell us anything about these people, and it becomes hard to care about them at all.
Also the amount of characters lead to my largest gripe with the movie. In the original, its only a few people and a couple of cameras. Here, everyone has their own camera, plus other ones they set up around them, and the movie is constantly quick cutting around to the different feeds, and it gets very annoying. I wanted some longer takes to set up some good conversations and tension, but none of that happens. It's no coincidence that the best section of the film is the last twenty minutes, when things start to ramp up and we go with fewer cameras.
Also with so many people in it, the film resorts to a lot of jump scares in the second act. Cheap, fake out ones at that. A few of them even come right as the film finally is starting to build some real tension and explore some interesting things, and it kind of ruins those moments.
There are also a couple of really cool concepts introduced that could have changed the entire complexion of the film, but they get introduced and then just not utilized at all, leaving a false hope of seeing something new and insane, and just getting the same old thing. It left me really wishing they had tried to go for it. One of the most disappointing things was that the group brought a camera drone. I was hoping for a cool sequence with it, something that would be innovative, but it ends up being a pointless addition.
The final 20 minutes are pretty nuts and easily the highlight of the film, and that sequence is probably the sole reason I enjoyed the movie.
Final thoughts are it's a decent, competent film, but one that had both too much and too little going on in it, and doesn't really add anything new to the series. If you're a huge fan of the original, or found footage movies in general, you will enjoy it, but 2016 has actually seen some very solid mainstream horror films, and I think because of that, it leaves you wanting more.
6/10

Started my fall horror movie marathon today. Started with The Thing (2011). It's not a masterpiece, and it has it's flaws, but it's scary and beautiful to look at. And frankly, underappreciated. It's above average sci-fi horror fare. 7/10

I've discovered recently that Horror Movies don't really do it for me anymore. I've been too de-sensitized to them.
If I want to watch something and be truly scared I go to Documentaries on real like Crimes/Murders. Paradise Lost for example is the one that made me realize how much I love Docs and can be terrified by them.

Yes, I liked the first movie, thought it was scary when I first saw it (in the theaters! I'm old, lol) I think the first movie gets some negative reactions for three main reasons: 1) it was so over hyped when it came out. My experience is that when people make such a big deal about a movie, it can't live up to their expectations. Luckily, I saw it before it blew up, so I wasn't expecting the scariest movie ever or whatever. 2) a lot of people don't have the patience for slow burn movies and have no imagination, so there was this huge backlash because..."they never showed the witch!" I guess people don't get the idea that your mind can create something scarier than cgi effects. (Or maybe I just have a real sick mind, lol) 3) the first movie gets blamed for the deluge of found footage movies that plague the horror genre to this day. Anyway I don't know much about the new movie, but I'm kind of excited that it may actually be good.
