I've heard people rave about this game (World of Warcraft). It really seems to be the most popular game of all time.
I've never played it.
It's supposed to be so addictive and fun, and for everyone, and I'm thinking of considering getting the game because I could really use something to occupy my time.
But to be honest, I've seen some demos and gameplay vids on youtube, and it just doesn't look that good. It looks too complicated, too many menus, and I really don't like all these weird arrows on the map during gameplay. Perhaps this isn't what it's usually like, and maybe I saw out of date videos. But from what I've seen, the gameplay and graphics are totally different from what you see in commercials. I'm also not a fan of medieval stuff.
I could always try a demo... but how close is the demo to the actual game? Plus I've heard lots of people having trouble getting their demo to work.
So, should I get World of Warcraft?
And how big of a learning curve is there?

Well WoW is medieval-style fantasy, so if that's a real turn off then perhaps you shouldn't play it. However, they do a free trial now where you can play up to level 20 without paying anything and then decide whether you want to start subscribing. us.battle.net/wow/en/

I've been toying with the idea of playing it myself, to which my friends have said "Don't do it, I was addicted. It consumed my life." Which just makes me want to play it more.

Did this by any chance sway you towards getting it?

You should get it, it's a really awesome game. Don't listen to those people who say it consumes your life. It's isn't really THAT addicting. Heck, I haven't played regularly for like a month or two now. But sooner or later, you'll want to play it again. At least, that's how it is for me. But try the free up to level 20 that they offer first, to see if you like it.

Hell, there are even tv shows about people's addiction to it. Obviously, it will not have the same affect on everyone. You could buy it and hate it. Honestly, if you're looking to occupy that much time, I think you should look for a more productive alternative.

Do the free trial thing or try it at a friends house. I did the latter, which I know I would've enjoyed more than a trial, and plus, any questions I have could've been answered on the spot during gameplay. That said, I didn't really like the game, and it didn't even take me long to figure out this wasn't for me, but I still played it after awhile. As long as it's free and you have some time to kill, I don't really see problem with trying it out.

Ok thanks everyone. Yes, all the commercials and Youtube fun and parodies made me think about it. There's that hot chick in the new commercial too I just hear so much about the game, and I had a friend who loved it and kept telling me to get it. As for being addicted and it consuming your life, that's not a problem for me. I don't really have a life right now, and I'm just looking for something to pass the time. My body is all ed up and sick right now and there isn't much else to do that's more constructive or meaningful.

I'm an ignorant ass because NO ONE I know has had their life destroyed in ANY way (and quite a lot of people around me play it)? Yeah, great logic It's the individual's fault that they allowed a game to consume their life. Actually get your facts right before you insult me.

The only instance I can think of is when that American woman judge person was talking to someone who's husband was completely ignoring their child. Like I said before, it's all down to the individual. Don't hate the game, hate the people playing it, because it's all down to them.

LOL... I saw that! It was Judge Judy, I believe.
One of the memories which reminds me what a cool game it must be...

Why don't you just get the new Star Wars MMO that's coming out? Why would I? What's so great about it? Part of WOW is that there are so many people playing it and it's such an in depth Universe. So popular.... I'd like to be a part of that.

From what I've heard WOW is on the decline in popularity. If any MMO can steal WOW's thunder I'm willing to bet it will be the Star Wars MMO since everybody either loves or at least knows Star Wars. I don't think it's any coincidence that they're starting World of Warcraft advertising campaigns right before the Star Wars game launches.
Star Wars the old republic intrigued me not only because it's set in the Star war's universe but also because it's made by Bioware (the guys who made Mass Effect and previous old republic games) so I know the game is in good hands and will feature conversation trees that create a unique story based on my choices. Not only that but it also has fully voiced NPCs, decent graphics and better customization.
You said yourself that you don't like Medieval themes so wouldn't this suit you better? At least with The Old Republic you know it will be an even playing field since mostly everyone will be new to the game just like you and you wouldn't be a little fish in a sea of level 80 something orcs or whatever.

Ok hmmm... the Star Wars game does sound interesting. I am a semi-fan of Star Wars and sometimes I've been a huge fan.
What would be really could is if you can travel to other planets as you wish. Like, you get in a ship, say goodbye to the users on that planet, and fly to another planet and greet the users there. It would be especially cool if you can do this freely and in a minimal amount of time. In video games I enjoy exploring places and roaming around different maps, even if it's all by myself and I'm completely lonely in some deserted world.
Also with Star Wars, I'd enjoy some laser guns. I like shooting poop.
What I'd love is to fly and explore the Millennium Falcon. I'd love to play on a MF map. I'd basically just stay on the ship by myself and do nothing... just pretend I'm really there chilling out.
Will any of this be possible in the Star Wars game? If so, I'm really interested. Could get me back into Star Wars fo sho.

Could get me back into Star Wars fo sho. There's a lot of info about the game on it's Wikipedia page. It says there's quite a few different planets and each player will receive their own starship. Among the different classes there's Smugglers, Troopers and Bounty Hunters so I'm assuming those will focus on rifles and other weapons besides lightsabers.
