If anybody shouldve ended the streak, it would be Edge. He was always weaseling his way into winning the World title and ended up being a transitional champion. He needed that big win.

I also didnt know what way the first HBK match was gonna go.....those 3 matches were the closest ran things I had ever seen. Vs Edge vs HBK(part I) vs Orton I truely thought that HBK was gonna end it the second time around. The whole retiring stip came out of no where so i had that little piece in me that was like "umm where did that come from? He has to be going over" However during the match I knew for sure Taker was winning. Thats what I loved so much about those 3 matches. Each one made you legitimately feel like he was going to lose. The HHH match last year was the same way.

Orton would've made perfect sense, but he turned out good still i think.

I'm pretty sure that, at that time, they weren't making such a big deal of the streak.
I know that at WM XIX they mentioned it during his match that he was undefeated but it certainly wasn't mentioned in the build up, nor was it mentioned even once in his match at WM XX.
I'm sure that the streak would just never have been made a big deal out of.
And HBK was always going to retire when he did. He would have just done it with someone else, maybe HHH or still maybe 'Taker. Obviously a completely different build up.

I remember thinking Batista might end the streak. I was excited all week for that match & I was on the edge of my seat for it.

God, can you imagine if Mark Henry had done it? I'd never heard it was a possibility until now... That would have been shocking.
Would've made sense for Orton to break it, but I'm glad he didnt.

Seriously outstanding match. Didnt expect Cena/Michaels to touch it at all but IMO Cena/Michaels was the better match

I was only 5 at the time of WM12 but I remember my older cousins talking about how Diesel lost to Taker because he announced he was going to WCW a few weeks before. There is a good possibility that Nash would have gone over at WM12 to build him up for HBK a month later had he not jumped ship.
After HHH completly burried him, Orton was in need of a huge win to get over again. I legitimatly thought that that was the best chance of the streak being broken. The "Legend Killer" gimmick was in full effect at the time, and because it was the first time the WWE made a big deal of the steak, I thought they were doing it to make Orton going over an even bigger acomplishment.
W/ Batista being the face of SD for about 2 years at the point, I thought the Animal had a goo shot at doing it. The match, while short, was much more entertaining than the Cena/HBK match that night, and I thought Batista might actually do it after putting Taker through the announce table.
Never thought Henry or Edge would go over. Henry because he's always been an upper mid-carder jobber since his return in 2006. Edge because he's always been a transitional champion, and if Batista, the face of SD a year before couldn't do it, then no way Edge was going to do it.
Never thought HBK would do it either. After refusing to win the world title after 2002, I knew he wouldn't want to be the one to break the streak.

I have heard that Nash story too and I honestly dont buy it.it was the typical UT vs Monster build and I genuinely never seen that outcome as in doubt.
Nash vs HBK had built in heat and they did a great job of rebuilding Diesel before IYH:Good Friends....Better Enemies.besides had Nash given his notice by WM12?I didnt think he had.

I really thought Batista was the one going to break the streak.
I know people wouldn't agree with me but I really thought it was over with HHH at @ WM27 especially after all those chair shots with HHH saying "stay down", then the pedigree, the cut throat sign then the tombstone. I really thought it was over after that. The match told a great story too that in kayfabe each WM takes a toll on Taker showing his human side.

I know Bret said in his book though that there were rumors of Nash and Hall leaving for WCW a few months before WM12.

WM 21 was the first time they made a big deal over the streak. It would have been a big win for Orton but nowhere near the accomplishment it would be nowadays. Orton's career probably wouldn't be that different than it is now had he won.
I remember reading that the reason he lost was because of his shoulder injury.
