Everyone has some sort of complaint - and maybe it's understandable short term (having a bad week, bad day), but for the most part, life in the West in 2011/2012 I think is pretty good. We have extreme technology that allows us to relax and spend hours doing leisurely activities, reading, playing video games, watching TV, going online. While many people do have stressful families/work lives, especially with a rough economy, it's a heck of a lot better than the previous decades/centuries/millenia of the history of the human race that has featured laborsome lives, full of murder, decay, starvation, etc. There are people, whether politically left/right, or from a religious standpoint that see those negative features existing here and throughout the world and want to fix it - and that's great too. But, regardless, I feel like the quality of life overall for Westerners in the modern age is pretty darn better than anything the human race has seen to compare it to, and that we should be a lot more grateful.

Yes, living conditions in the west are the best they ever have been, but it's all about relativity. If one was brought up in the slums of India, of course you'd feel better off. But because we are so exposed (through intensive mass media) to other, more affluent lifestyles, we are left craving more. It's just feels more natural within society to say, "I wish I had X" rather than "I am glad I have Y". Also advertising has created this culture where you can only be 'happy' if you have Product X. we have been brought up in a consumerist society, and conditioned to want. None of us (or at least 99.9% of us) will never have everything there is to have and for most people this restrains their potential for happiness. I don't think most people would consider themselves 'very happy', not genuinely, and I think this is the reason why.
Possible to escape from this mindset, but certainly difficult.

No. The internet was the best and the worst invention ever at the same time. Now nothing gets done, and everyone thinks they know everything. It's only going to get worse.
How's that for negativity?
