So I'm watching WWF Primetime from the summer of 1989, and they show a Barry Windham match, and then they show Tony Shivannoe doing a promo for home video, then we get a Dusty Rhodes promo.
Now I had always known that all these guys had a stint with the WWF, what caught my attention was the fact they all came in around the same time.
Arn Anderson Tully Blanchard Ron Garvin Dusty Rhodes Barry Windham Tony Shivannoe
Were all apart of the WWF roster in 1989.
If I recall correctly these guys were big draws for the NWA(WCW) at time, heck three of them were horsemen.
Tony Shivannoe's stint in the WWF always surprised me as I always saw him as NWA loyal, just watching his promos in the WWF you could tell that something was off.
So my question is...what the hell was going in the NWA during 1989 that made them lose some top stars? Was their financial problems, or was Vince offering good money? Could it have been a falling out with management? Which also led to Flair's stint in the WWF.
I hope you guys can shed light on this!

Anderson and Blanchard left the NWA cause of money issues. They weren't getting paid enough. JJ Dillon also soon left for the WWE and was in the back as some executive agent type guy. Windham came over as soon as he dropped the US Title, Dusty left the NWA in early 89 and went to Florida and then came into the WWE in summer of 89. Same with Tony.
I am guessing Jim Herd probably had something to do with it, or maybe some just wanted a change and a chance to say they worked for the WWE at least once in their life. Not sure.
It's like, why did those guys all end up going back to WCW??
But the same can be said for WWE guys who leave to go to WCW (like Davey Boy Smith) they just didn't fit there and they come back to the WWE.

schiavone in wwe was always bizarre to me as well, but the fact he stayed employed in the wrestling business in general is fascinating.

yup Jammer you are spot on there chief.
all these arrivals stemmed from money issues.Flair and The Roadies were also en route but Turner execs put cash into them to stay.
Vince wanted The Roadies to feud with Superheels Demolition in 88,but after that fell through he took POP instead......of course they were a failure and it led to the famous double turn at SSeries 88.The Roadies probably would have mowed the Bolsheveiks down at SSlam 88 just like POP did.
Rumors persist Flair was meant to debut at Summerslam 88 too......

Regarding Schiavone, I actually thought Jim Ross sounded much more out of place on a WWF broadcast than Schiavone did.
Of course, that's almost impossible to comprehend now that Ross has become the voice of WWE's last 15+ years or so. But when he debuted, he seemed way out of place.

I agree, Ross was very awkward when he first joined the WWE, especially during his debut at WM 9 in that toga! I don't think think he really started gelling in WWE until he began consistently calling Raw with Vince and Lawler. Then, when Vince left the booth to play the Mr. McMahon character, he really began hitting his stride.

Alot of the problem was Crocket was losing money and the wrestlers wern't getting great pay days, and then when Turner bought the promotion and made it WCW alot of wrestlers wern't happy with Jim Herd who was running it, which is the reason Flair left in 91

Would have been great had Flair came over with all of them. Then Vince could have reunited his version of the Horsemen. Plus if memory serves me, I believe J.J. Dillon was also working backstage at the time.
Could you imagine if we would have got The Mega Powers vs the Four Horsemen? I'm salivating just thinking about it. Hell, I'd cut off my own hand for a chance to see Randy Savage vs Barry Windham.

I don't like thinking of anything happening in 88/89 other than the mega powers angle. Their teaming and explosion is still my favorite angle of all time. I'm just not sure how bringing in the horsemen would have affected that. I would be interested to see what thy would have done with Flair during that time period, while keeping the Hogan/Savage deal essentially the same. I guess having the Horsemen there would have meant taking the Twin Towers out of that spot. I'm also having trouble remembering who all was there, so who else could Flair have feuded with? Hmmm... I'll give this more thought once I've gotten some sleep.

yeah that's why most guys that came in from other promotioms were given new gimmicks. I remember reading somewhere that when Harley Race came in they set up the whole king of the ring gimmick for him to highlight him as an accomplished wrestler witout making any nods to NWA

Race,Arn & Tully and Flair all parts of the Heenan family.
makes me wonder why Windham didnt end up in there

i still remember when Herd wanted to change Flair's gimmick to a "Spartacus" knock-off complete with shorter hair (which Flair did do) , shield, cape, and armor.... because "Vince has characters"....
