They closed their stores due to bankruptcy. Pretty sure they still do retail online though. I thought sears absorbed them. Nah it was in fact bankruptcy. Filed in 1997, they emerged in from protection in 1999 with GE Capital as the owner. GE reneged on promises to further financially support the chain and the restructuring plans. Within weeks of the Dec. 28, 2000 closing announcement, the remaining 250 stores were in fact closed completely. [That info comes from Wikipedia. I knew a bit about Ward's because that was a big thing at the mall where my grandma lives, but I didn't know most of that.] They do, however, still operate as online retail at Wards.com

I liked the tool department at Sears. They sell Craftsman tools (which have a lifetime guarantee) and my dad would always get his beat-up, broken tools replaced for free.
But as a kid, I would have to fight my brothers & sisters just for a 5 minute look at the Christmas Wish Book. THAT brings back so many good memories.

I miss having a KB Toys in my mall. I remembered always leaving with something everytime I went there. Growing up the mall near my house, Brickyard Mall was AWESOME! It had pretty much everything I wanted. AND........................ It had.......... TWO, yes that's 2 Kb toys!!!!!! One was mid mall on the lower level and it was called Kay Bee toys. The other was on the second level in a corner and it was called K-B Toys. I would run to one store looking for hasbro wwf toys. And when I couldnt find a certain figure I would run to the other store and usually found what ever the other store didnt have. I miss the Brickyard so much. I had the 2 Kb toys, a Spencers, Kmart, Toy's R Us, Wards, JcPenny, Suncoast, Marshalls, and a Child World. All stores in which I would get TOYS!!! Now though the Brickyard is a waste. Only a target and marshals. The rest is all either sneaker stores, hip hop wear, dollar stores, second hand stores, or empty parking lot.

I remember at one point, there was the KB Toys, and then another store called K&K Toys was, if I'm not mistaken, a part of the same company as KB. It was like Milincoln, where I'd go to one, and then the other if I was allowed to get something but didn't find it at the other.

I can think of at least 4 Sears in Mass. that should have closed before the two in NH, instead of the whopping zero that will.

This really sucks [more so for the people losing their jobs considering I rarely go to Sears *more to KMart but even that is rare*]. It doesn't look like any Sears/K-marts in my area are closing which is good news although like I said I probably won't go to my area stores much.

Yeah Suncoast has closed up in my area. But FYE is still open. And it's the opposite where my grandma lives. FYE is closed up, but the Suncoast is still booming.

KB Toys only ever operated under one name, so the store in your mall was just independently owned knock off.

They've failed to compete in a changing marketplace. Anyone buy anything at Sears.com? Me neither. They're far more expensive than online retailers. There's no reason to go there. I discovered today that my garbage disposal died. I found a replacement on Amazon for $100. I can buy the same model at at local hardware store for $130 or I can go to Sears and get it for $200. Why would I not go to Amazon? Now, if Sears offered the thing for $110 or something, I might be willing to pay a premium in order to not have to wait. Twice the price though?

Although oddly enough, I found the cheapest price online at Sears by about $75 for a console record player I got my wife for Christmas, and they had free shipping. I recognize it is rare, but I thought it was worth mentioning since you say that. I went in a K-Mart the other day for the first time in years, and walking around, I was in awe. I can't believe this place is still operating at all. It's practically a ghost town during the busy hours, not to mention how outdated the store looks, and how poorly run it is. K-Mart shutting down would be a mercy killing.

annnnnnd there goes my local Kmart down the road. Been there since before I was born. Same here, the Kmart near me is on that list. Pretty crazy how far it's fallen as far as sales and all. Sears and Kmart used to be bustling when I'd go in there.

It makes me feel like I've just walked into a timewarp or something. Its trippy to think that it seems out of date/old/cluttered/whatever today, and yet back in the day I bet that was top of the line as far as clean/nice retail goes.
