Is anyone else sad to hear that sears will be closeing 100+ stores?
I know it sounds like sad news to me. Things I remember as a kid seem to all be disappearing fast. Indoor malls seem to be closing and I love those. I hate the outdoor strip style malls.
As a kid I can remember my parents going to the Brickyard mall in Chicago. They would go to Montgomery Wards, Silo, then maybe my dad would take me to Kaybe toys or spencers for toys or Coconuts or Sam goody, or Suncoast for games/movies. Sadly though the mall was torn down and replaced by a big strip mall. Not many chain stores at Brickyard nowadays. And the stores listed above are gone. If not dead they are hard to find.
I also have fond memorys of my parents shopping at sears. Sears is where my dad bought me my first tool set.

It just sucks walking into a mall and not having a KB Toys, FYE or Borders in there.

It's not gone yet. They are closing around 100 Kmart/Sears stores out of the 4,000 or so that are around in the US and Canada.

I would be sad had Sears not had the ability to compete well and stay current in people's minds. I don't think I know anyone who shops at Sears or Kmart still. Anytime I wander through either they're dead.

Why is sears stores closing Declining sales, even during the holiday season. If the Sears in my area isn't one of the 100 stores closing, it will only be a matter of time before it does close down anyway. Every time I go in there it's practically empty. It's sad to seeing any business close its doors.

I always liked Sears growing up, but it's an outdated concept these days. The only time I ever go there is to buy tools, lawn equipment, or appliances. But honestly, I don't do that very often. Lawn equipment, tools, and even appliances are often cheaper at Home Depot, or other electronics stores. And those stores are more convienant.
As a kid I used to go to Zayers, Richway, Service Merchandise, KB Toys, Lionel Playworld, Rich's, Walden Books, FAO Schwartz, Woolworths, and other stores that are all gone now. K-Mart, Sears, JC Penny, Ace Hardware barely exist now, and are one step away from shutting completely.
It happens to everyone as they get older. Business changes, and evolves.

The store I started at the company with is one that got the axe. My store is a border store, and we get a lot of out of state people dodging sales tax, which keeps revenues pretty high. It's still pretty scary when the company makes an announcement like this, then doesn't release the list of stores for a couple of days.

Sears actually does pretty good business here. But yeah to see things that were booming when I was younger, things that are reminders of my childhood, to see them closing it is kinda sad. Suncoast is already gone, but FYE is still here. Hopefully to stay, because I need somewhere to go when Best Buy doesn't stock stuff I want. Case and point, had to go to FYE for the new Devildriver and In Flames albums because Best Buy didn't stock them.....smh.

What I think is sad is that I read Sears, in part, is unable to compete with Target and Walmart. Which are supposed to be "trendier" stores. I agree that NEWER Walmarts/Targets look nicer than older sears. The only thing I disagree with is that Sears in its heyday sold very nice, good quality clothing. I loved getting my Carharts there as well as clothing. Then they merged with Kmart and kinda lost my interest.
The thing IMHO about Walmart/Target is that the clothes they sell seems cheap quality to me. I dont think they carry any good name brand clothing. I might be wrong, I dont really get clothes at either store. I know when I go to Walmart/Target it's usually for grocerys, paper goods, toys, dvds, and seasonal items. I never buy clothes at either store, except maybe socks, and the ocasional novelty Tee.
Kmart seems really poor quality to me. And yet I go to look for the 1 Jakks Ra figure made every year.

it'll be a sad day when sears goes under, the wishbook is one of my favourite yearly things to do around the holiday season.

It just sucks walking into a mall and not having a KB Toys, FYE or Borders in there. Same here, I barely go to malls now since many stores I personally prefer are gone.

May I ask if anyone remembers since I was so young at the time, what happened to Montgomery Ward?

I miss having a KB Toys in my mall. I remembered always leaving with something everytime I went there.
