Haven't seen this clip in a while and it got me wondering. The fact that Cena received a pop this big in MSG just really surprises me to this day. NYC is pretty much notorious for their hatred for Cena. I think this shows that while we all hate him and boo him and all of that he leaves a HUGE void when he's not around. So big that we all want him to come back but wont admit it. What does everyone else think?

He does leave a void, that's for sure. At the same time I understand why a lot of WWE fans get fed up of him.
It still baffles me how quickly he went from being the most cheered guy in the company to the most booed in the company within a couple of months though. And I find it quite sad how hateful some people are towards him (they're mostly retards and 15 year olds on Youtube but still).

At this point, it's probably gone from legit hate (there's been worse gimmicks/characters than Cena), and is more "fun" to cause the "Let's Go Cena/Cena Sucks" chants. Kind of like how everyone went "You Suck" during Angle's entrance regardless of alignment pre-ECW.

I think it proves people like surprises. Yeah. I love the Rumble and would be excited for ANY surprise entrant! Even someone crapty like Bobby Lashley!

I think that's the case with some fans too, but there's plenty of others who can't stand the fact that he's the Face of the WWE during it's 'crapty, kiddy, boring PG era.'

I think people started to hate on him because he started to become the 'cooperate champion' that Vince wanted him to be. Gone were the sweet raps he did, and having the fans end it by yelling a swear word. And it was all replaced by him saying stupid things in promos that you would hear a small child say that thinks it's funny. If Cena still came out to "Word Life! Basic Thuganomics" then I think the fans would explode. I remember a Wrestlemania a few years ago when that song started the fans went nuts. I believe it was at Wrestlemania 25. And then a bunch of Cena clones came out to that song, and then his "Time Is Now" song started, the fans started to boo again. Fans like 2003 - Wrestlemania 21 Cena. Once he got to Raw, he changed to fit the cooperate eye!

And as for that bit in bold, talk about irony. Yelling swear words isn't something that a small child would do, thinking it's funny? This argument seems ass backwards to me. He's made some big steps since his days of rapping about his dick and yelling 'Word life.' People cheered him and chanted his name against JBL at Judgment Day 2005, and by Summerslam of the same year, he was being booed 'cause he won. That's a fickle fanbase right there, and that's all it is. By the way I think the word you're looking for is corporate.

Yeah!! hahaha I typed it out fast, corporate! Well, at least you knew what I meant haha
But what I mean is, now when John Cena talk in promos, he says things that a small child would say. John Cena is like a big giant kid.
Yes, maybe the raps were corny and ending his raps in a swear word that the fans could yell, while Cena puts the mic' in the air is bold to do, but it was different and the fans did take to it.
I don't care to hear John Cena say stuff like "Holy peant butter bananas and fudge" when talking.
I rather him say something like "At Wrestlemania 28, my match with The Rock, he won't be down on his knees begging for mercy, he'll be down on his knees ready to suck my... " and the fans yelling "cock!!"
That would probably make fans still like Cena, cause he would be edgier.

This wasn't really THAT big of a pop. It was a good pop, but there just wasn't any boos really. I've heard the Garden get WAYYYYYY louder than this.

I get one you mean there have been huge pops there that blow this one away but this guy gets reactions nowhere near this big anywhere nowadays. I think it just shows that they need to turn him heel now or they need to give him some time off so that people realize (like they did in late 07 while he was out) that Cena is a huge part of the show and that he's more entertaining then 90 percent of this board and the fans give him credit for.

I don't know, I mean fans love to see a guy rise to the top but don't like to see him stay there. What guy has gotten to the top of the mountain that people haven't eventually gotten tired of at some point or another? Triple H, Cena, Orton, Miz, now Punk. It happens to everyone from what I can tell. There is a big part of the audience that loves Cena still or loves Punk, but there are people that start to turn on them and if a guy does the same thing long enough more and more will turn on him as well. I enjoyed Legend Killer Randy Orton more than I did The Viper. I enjoyed rapping Cena more than I do boyscout Cena. That being said, it's the same guy, and neither of those gimmicks could have stuck around forever, as eventually the fans would have gotten tired of those acts as well. Guys change and evolve and some times it gets better or worse and some times it's just as good but just different. Stone Cold Steve Austin was never as entertaining in the 2000s as he was from 97-99, but he was still entertaining. Shawn Michaels was the most exciting from 96-98, but he spent 2002-2010 proving he is arguably the greatest wrester of all time. Wrestlers evolve and change and the fans will react based on the circumstances in which the performer is presented.
As far as the Rumble reaction though, I just think people love surprises. The WWE is built on mark out moments imo.

The Royal Rumble return has gotta be the most I've marked the out to a Cena-related moment, hands down. NOBODY saw that coming, and anybody who says otherwise is a liar. Cena was doing guest spots on radio shows right up until the weekend of the Rumble saying that he'd be out for the forseeable future and how gutted he was that he'd miss WrestleMania. He worked us all a treat. Great moment.

I think that WWE is being very careful with Cena right now. They're trying to make us love him again without shoving him down our throats. Using a fan favorite like Zack Ryder and using mega heels like Kane and Dolph Ziggler is a sure way to sugar-coat the "hatred" for him. It's almost like they're trying to make us forget that we hate him even though that's what the storyline is supposed to revolve around.
I, personally, have loved him since he beat Big Show for the US title, but I can definitely understand why he gets the wrap that he does these days. He's predictable and somewhat corny, but I just think that's who he is in real life. So I buy it. Keeping him off of TLC was a very good idea on WWE's part as well. I would love to see a heel turn, but the way this is panning out, it seems as though they're protecting his "faceness." I don't think a heel turn is in our direct future but it is inevitable.
And I love being wrong when it comes to wrestling. Keeps me excited.

Cena got heavily booed after he actually entered the match.

People quickly turned on Cena because his matches were never that good, especially when you still had guys like Angle, HBK, The Baby-Killer, and RVD around. Then with time, Cena started becoming cornier and his target fanbase started narrowing down to being kid-friendly. Because of this, the boos slowly started becoming louder and louder.
People cheered at the Rumble because of the surprise factor. If it was any other main-event wrestler who had been absent, the result would have been very similar.

"Rapping" Cena was so corny and ridiculous. Even JR said that Cena going backwards to a gimmick like that would be completely pointless (I don't remember the exact quote)
That pop at MSG was definitley because NO ONE knew it was coming. Cena was injured and for once there weren't 867 different reports and pictures of him at the airport the night of RR.

That was such a huge disappointment for me and to have him win it as well made it even worse.

Everyone hating Cena didn't really begin until the PG era, and I'm pretty sure this was before it. Cena still had a fairly large fanbase that didn't only consist of children at this point. Sure, people hated him, but a lot of people still loved him. Also, I don't think I've ever seen someone get booed at their return. Especially if it's a surprise. Call me crazy, but I think SOME of the fans are starting to like him again, at least I am. I think that the fans are starting to like him because right now he actually has a good rivalry going, that doesn't involve a world title. Slowly, I think a lot more fans will start to like him now that he isn't holding the title at every PPV. This past week on Raw, I found myself cheering a little bit when Cena came out and attacked Kane. This rivalry might be the WWE trying to get Cena back up there as a fan favorite.

Well, while it was a big pop, they did start booing once he got in the ring.
It was like "HOLY SH/T HES HERE.... Oh thats right, we hate him. BOO!"
