WrestleMania really is one of the biggest events in all of sports.
The WWE’s flagship pay-per-view is like professional wrestling’s Super Bowl, generating a ton of interest in the WWE product and a boatload of money for the city that hosts it.
That’s why a number of cities often get involved in intense bidding wars in an effort to host WrestleMania and subsequently provide a huge boost to the city’s economy.
We’ve heard a lot of speculation about which cities are in the running to host WrestleMania 29 in 2013, but it looks like a couple of those cities may no longer be in the running.
From WrestleZone.com:
There have been many speculations and reports over the last year that pointed towards WrestleMania 29 possibly taking place at the new Cowboys' stadium in Dallas or in Toronto. I have been told neither of those locations are going to be the site of WrestleMania 29.
New Orleans was also rumored to have been strongly considered as a possibility, and that is not going to be the site either, according to sources.
While I’d mark out big time if WrestleMania came to New Orleans (my hometown) and Cowboys Stadium would be a great fit for such a big PPV, I’m not surprised that WrestleMania may not take place in either city next year.
Cowboys Stadium could theoretically seat 100,000 or more fans, but scheduling conflicts—such as the NCAA men’s basketball tournament—are likely going to prevent the WWE from hosting WrestleMania there within the next few years.
Meanwhile, New Orleans is obviously in the southern part of the country, and the last five WrestleManias (including WrestleMania 28) will have been held in southern cities: Atlanta, Miami, Glendale (Ariz.), Houston and Orlando.
I realize that the WWE likes holding its flagship pay-per-view in warm-weather cities, but I think keeping it primarily in one geographical area (the Southeast) alienates fans from other parts of the country (and sometimes, the world) too much.
Although WrestleZone reports that Toronto will not host WrestleMania next year, I think that’s one of the prime locations the WWE will be looking at.
Toronto is a great wrestling city, and the WWE would be wise to hold its biggest PPV of the year in a city with such a loyal wrestling fan base.
Regardless of what the WWE has in mind at the moment, though, I think the WWE will be looking North for its WrestleMania 29 host city.
