I know I'm not the only one who finds it odd that on consecutive years (89-90) Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake was unable to challenge for the Intercontinental Championship due to injuries.
Do you guys feel it was a coincidence, or curse?

I don't think he was due a title shot at Summerslam 89. From memory Brutus teamed with Hogan against Zeus and Savage in the main event.
He was meant to face Honky at the 1988 event but was supposedly injured by Outlaw Ron Bass. But even then i think he was selling the attack by Bass so that the Warrior could take his place and win the title from Honky.

I stand corrected. I totally forgot that he was slated to face HTM in 88, so it was not consecutive years, but still 2 out of 3.

If there is an IC Title curse at SummerSlam, it's that it mainly changes hand at that event.
88 - 92 it changed hands. Then again in 94, and 97 - 2002 it changed hands. HBK retained it in 93 and 95, 96 and 2003 it wasn't even on the card, and in 2004 Edge retained it.

I was just thinking about Beefacke the other day and how ing unfortunate he was for this to happen TWICE.both times he was gonna have Vince behind him 100%....as as one of the most over guys(which he was)it made sense. makes you wonder what would have happened had he beat HTM in 88 & Perfect in 90 like was planned.what would the Warriors big getting over moment have been......

I think the Summerslam 88 match was planned out well as Warrior was going to be the bigger thing. Surprising Hogan didn't have any say in it for Beefcake to keep the shot. A feud with Bass would really go nowhere but a hair cut match.
If Beefcake had gone to the Summerslam match maybe it would go down one of two ways. 1) Beefcake wins, Honkytonk wins back another night, Warrior wins next all within a few weeks or 2) Bass interferes in the match, cuts up Beefcake with the spurs, ref wants to stop the match and DQ Honky and Warrior comes out and like Wrestlemania 9 with Hart/Hogan Warrior comes in and defeats Honky in record time.
As for Summerslam 90 I see Beefcake getting a bigger run than Tornado. Tornado was popular, got a big ovation at Royal Rumble after not doing much for months but I think Beefcake was more popular and over with the home crowd. Beefcake was probably more reliable and had been in the company for 5 years and was a Hogan friend. Maybe a title run until Wrestlemania and Perfect beats him, Beefcake goes on to do the Barber shop and Hart wins at Summerslam. I just can't see Beefcake keeping the title only a few months like Tornado.

Also, at SummerSlam 90, the original plan after Beefcake fail through wasn't for Von Erich to win the belt, but Davey Boy Smith. But Davey Boy couldn't get his work visa's done fast enough so they gave it to Von Erich instead.

I loved Kerry, but He was done by the time he came to the WWF, and was not the prototypical IC workhorse. But seeing him win it was a big deal for me none the less, and though I felt Beefcakes winning the title was overdue, I preferred The Tornado over him.

I actually didn't care for Beefcake though.
