Pretty much every guy WWE brings in from other places like Low Ki, Kings of Wrestling etc have ALL had to change their names because WWE wanted to copywrite them to WWE so they couldn't use them elsewhere but Punk hasn't.
I even remember reading last year, that WWE wanted Punk to sign his name over, thats why Punk was hesitating to sign a new contract, basically wondering how come WWE have let Punk keep his CM Punk name when they brought him in and didn't make him change it because they couldn't have it

If I remember correctly, he fought hard to keep it without WWE copyrighting it. I think it may have been one of the reasons his TV debut was delayed for a while.

I think if he debuted on Raw or Smackdown first he would of had more trouble. But ECW fans were more indy watchers and would feel weird if he got a name change.

I'm sure Heyman had something to do with it. Otherwise we'd have Brookfield Zoolander as our WWE Champion right now.

Heyman wanted Punk to come in with as much fire as possible, and keeping his name was part of it since he had the ROH following. Heyman wanted to push Punk to the moon like 5 years before WWE got around to being forced to do it.

But on slightly different note, I can't imagine the look that CM Punk had at the time being credible as a main eventer. I never really bought into him as champion until he had short hair, I think he looks a lot more legitimate now and, I dare say, older.

It would have been really interesting to see how Heyman handled the whole thing. I have to believe that whatever blueprint he had for Punk was designed to make us take him seriously right away. Obviously, it all worked out, albeit with Punk forcing the push, but I would love to hear Heyman talk in-depth about his plans at the time.

I think he was the main talent Heyman had interest in, he had some creative imput to ECW when Punk got called up, probably pulled some strings to let him keep it.

Basically what everyone else has said. Heyman bargained hard for him, and he was pretty much the last of an era. Anybody else could continue using the same name if they wanted to sign it over to WWE.

I wonder if he signed his name over when he resigned with the company this past summer?

I doubt it, I think I remember that being part of the issue with him resigning.
I know that Heyman wanted Punk to go over in the Extreme Elimination Chamber and Eliminate Big Show in the opening moments of the match to make him look crazy over. Of course we all know how that went. Hey Vince, how's Lashley working out for ya?

Bingo. Heyman had Punks back in the early times and did a LOT of talking for him.
