So basically im making this thread because a board memeber in the Talent that were meant to be big but flopped suggested it and i thought it was sick idea. Basically who were guys that were brought in to be basically nothing and looked like they were going no where and then suddenly became a big deal.
IMO the two biggest ones that I can think of are Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Miz. I would have said Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels but they were a pretty big deal as memebers of the Rockers and Hart Foundation. Austin was brought in and looked like crapas the Ringmaster and many thought he would be a flash in the pan like most guys were from 90 to 96 But by the end of the year he was one of the top heels in the company and by 98 he was the face of the company. And as for the Miz he started out as the host of smackdown and was goddamn annoyying and pretty much nobody liked him, then he was nothing more then a jobber for well over a year. Skip ahead about 2 years and the guy is headlining Wrestlemania and goes over the biggest name in the WWE in John Cena. So who else fits into the meant to be nothing mold?

Undertaker, I'm sure the gimmick wasn't suppose to go over as huge as it did

Zack Ryder, Santino Marella, Dolph Ziggler, JBL, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, The Rock, Stone Cold, Teddy Long (to an extent) and The Miz are the ones who come to mind for me, honestly.

Undertaker, I'm sure the gimmick wasn't suppose to go over as huge as it did Idk man Taker was pushed like crazy right from the start......The gimmick itself had it not debuted when it did would not have gotten over. 90 to 95 was the golden age of crazy gimmicks.

I think everyone they use is expected to be big or they wouldn't have been used. The Hardys started as enhancement talent, so I will add their names.

Wasn't MVP orginally a joke? Until he feuded with Kane, and went on to win the United States Championship a couple of times and had a Tag Team Championship run?

Miz I guess defines it.
The guy who was labeled as the "Jannetty" of his memorable tag team, was the one to Indeed, Main event and beat John Cena for the title.
If thats not the biggest turn-around of jumping from the bottom to the top, I dont know what is.

I doubt they expected Undertaker to become the best wrestler of ALL WWE. He is on top right now..he has won nearly everything..if not everything. Plus come on...19-0 at WM "fake" or not...pre-determined or not...UNDERTAKER is the man who has done the impossible and MORE. i Doubt Vince was like this guy is gonna be the legendary UNDERTAKER 20-0 at WM28.
iDK if he has won king of the ring though... hmm.

Taker never won KOTR...in fact, the only time he was ever in the tournament was 1995, the year Mabel won....
another one i'll go with is Kane.... brought in to feud with Taker, but the character took on a life of it's own and became so popular,he beat Austin for the WWF Championship....15 years later,he's still here...
Sean Waltman too....going from being the Lightning Kid in the independents, to debuting as The Kid,getting that surprise win over Razor Ramon, then basically rode it to multiple championships, and a huge career in both WWF/WWE and WCW....skinny little kid,and the sumbitch was HUGELY over!

THE UNDERTAKER lost in a KOTR tournament :\ with Mable winning thats sad.
Kane..yeah true but you failed to mention thats kanes title reign was hard to watch...he was in a first blood match with him..where austin was bleeding and it wasnt even kane who did it to him. next night kanes wwf title reign was over..sad sad sad. sucks too. I believe he won thanks to THE UNDERTAKER though.
Sean waltman def. was a major suprise to rise.

Mick Foley. He got pushed strong against Undertaker at the beginning, but I don't think he was ever seriously considered to be a main event guy or WWF Champion. The insane bumps at KOTR 98 in the Cell I think was the nudge that moved him up.
Cena too. He was floundering doing nothing on the verge of being released, before the rapper gimmick started and that got him over and just snowballed from there. But if Cena never got to be Vanilla Ice at the SD Halloween Party and cut the rap, we probably wouldn't be talking about Cena v. Rock right now.

You could have gone with best gimmick or best big (tall) man, and I would have let it go, but that, no. Additionally, Taker was WWF Champion 5 minutes into his WWF career. He has been booked like a star for 20 years. And going 19-0 isn't impossible when the matches are pre determined, Goldberg was 173-0. This is one of the more ridiculous posts I have read in a long time. Where's that "It's still real to me" gif when you need it.

I don't think Cena was supposed to be big - I remember reading Vince hated him at first.

Austin was not meant to be nothing. Fans knew who he was, he was an established upper midcarder in WCW prior to his WWF debut, and debuted with DiBiase as his manager, and the Million Dollar Title.

And while it may not be impossible, the streak certainly is extraordinary considering it was purely coincidence for the first 10 years and could have been booked to lose at any point (9, 14, 16, 17) come to mind To stay on topic I'd have to go with miz even after him and morrison broke up everyone though Morrison was going to be the break out star

Yeah, I'm gonna throw Cena in there too. Obviously he came in great and got to look competitive against Kurt Angle, and had a steady little push for a month or two. But by about August/September, the guy was on Velocity losing to the likes of Reverend D-Von and Chuck Palumbo. He was going nowhere until by fluke they found out he could rap and the rest is history. The first line of his bio on WWE.com says it all. "Really, now. Who ever saw John Cena coming?"
