Regarding all of the recent talk about custom Jakks heads, I thought I would just give this quick little "shout out". I wasn't sure if this should be in "Customs" or "Customs Support", but I figured more folks would see this here.
For you customizers who are undecided about whether or not to order any custom heads from bigeviljohn's "head shop", let me say that I recently received a variety of Jakks-scaled heads from him (advanced copies, if you will?), and I was absolutely blown away by what I received!
I'd never dealt with anything like these before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the quality was 100% top notch. My lot included various rescaled WWF Hasbro, AWA Remco, WCW Galoob, and Japanese figures, and there was absolutely no loss of detail from the original figure to the "rescsaled" version. Words can't describe at how pleased I was with the quality. I probably won't post pictures as bigeviljohn has plety of images up already that shows examples of his work. I must say that pictures don't do justice to the actual product. The detail is phenomenal.
Yes, there will be just a little bit of sanding and filling, as there are plastic "stems" on the top of the heads from the molding process that will need to be removed, but it is a minor fix. As for filling, besides where the stems were on the top of the heads, there were no real holes or air bubbles to speak of on the heads I received. Again, I was stunned at the quality of these things. Sanding or filling really shouldn't pose any major problems, even for those who may not have a whole lot of customizing experience.
Painting the heads looks to be the biggest obstacle from what I've heard from other members (mine came unpainted which I knew beforehand and have no problem doing myself).Yes, painting may be an issue for some, and I don't really know what to say about that one way or the other. If you have any experience painting and detailing customs, than you shouldn't have a problem with these. If you don't, then it's probably worth giving it a shot, or maybe working out a deal with other members to paint them for you.
Also, the heads did not come with the neck "pegs" so you'll need spare ones unless you want to glue them directly onto the body. For mine, the heads all seemd to fit just fine. Some of them were a bit tight, but they still popped on and retained full mobility. As such, I might suggest attaching the head onto the torso before painting it, as you don't want to run the risk of slipping up and chipping any paint off by pushing the head onto the neck.
In closing, I highly recommend supporting bigeviljohn once he gets things up and running. I was absolutely floored at the high quality product that I received, and I will for sure be a repeat customer. I know that casting these heads is a time consuming, not to mention expensive undertaking, and I'm thankful that someone like bigeviljohn is willing to take time out of his "real life" to help all of us here.
Just my two cents - thanks all, and have a great day!
