Maybe it's just me, but the lighting that WWE uses both RAW, Smackdown and Superstars and most PPVs kind of bugs me. I'm not sure when it was first introduced, but for a while now there has always been a red or blue tint across the first few rows of the crowd on RAW and Smackdown, and a lot of PPVs have really brightly coloured lights around the arena. To me, it kind of distracts from what's going on in the ring. I'm not really sure why it bugs me other than that, probably because the lighting is a lot like the stage designs nowadays i.e. virtually the same at every single PPV.
Here's a couple of clips to show the difference.
Monday Night RAW in November 2002
Couple of notes:
1. Great match
2. Notice the strobe lighting for RVDs entrance, also cool pyro, something else lacking today.
3. Pause at 2.43 to get a good look at the lighting; the whole crowd is lit and the place looks filled to the rafters, but at the same time there are no bright colours every where taking the focus off of the competitors.
Monday Night RAW in May 2012
Not only does the LEDs-all-over-the-damn-place stage look crappy compared to back then, but notice the red glow over the camera-side crowd, as well as how the corners of the arena are totally blacked out.
Basically I think the way the arena is lit nowadays is not only detracting from the action in the ring, but it also doesn't give off such a cool atmoshphere; especially those blacked out parts (probably due to half the arena being empty, sad face).
I know it's an odd thing to be bugged by, but I really do miss a lot of the presentation aspects of WWE years back; the unique stages, the unique pyro in entrances, the strobe lighting, the the red ropes on RAW, and what I've talked about here, the arena lighting (which again changed for a lot of guys' entrances, these days only a handful have mood lighting for their entrance).
So, I'd like to get your opinion on this. Cheers.
