Yes, yes, I know... This subject has been brought up a number of times but we are on a site dedicated to us wrestling figure fans and I think we like discussing figures just as much as collecting them. So... why not discuss this further? With that said, on to our subject.
The reason for this poll is to give Mattel and idea as to what we would like to see out of this new scale. I think it could sink or swim based on how it is executed. I also added the prices on the poll because the detail and articualtion does effect the pricing for these figures and that too has to be taken into account when people buy figures. $8.99 is about average for a nicely detailed and well articulated figure. I would like to think a smaller basic would be $5.99 because of the less tooling that is involved. I am basing the $5.99 off of the Green Lantern line which wasn't as well engineered as a Marvel Universe figures and that was how much they were going for. Granted the retailers are the ones who ultimatley set the prices but we'll see
Now, if these new smaller WWE figures are going be anything like their larger 6" counterparts then it could be a really good line. If these are going to be nothing more than smaller dulled down versions of thier 6" counterparts (Ahem... Green Lantern figures) so they can be cheaper priced, then they'll just be another line of figures whose sole purpose to to make a toy aisle give the illusion that it is full of product.
Of course Mattel could already be far into the process and have these ready to be shown at SDCC. In any event, I think this is a great opportunity for Mattel as figures in this scale appeal to all kinds of customers, and this could be a great way to make almost everyone happy. Rumblers get over just fine with adult collectors and these could too, just for the shear fact that they are small WWE figures. Smaller means cheaper prices, usually, but it doesn't have to mean low quality either as some companies have proven.
I personally would like to see shrunken Elite figures with Legends/Flashback thrown into the mix. If this is done right I would even consider selling off my larger figures and replacing them with these. It is also a great opportunity for Mattel to do what they didn't with the larger lines. A small elite style ring but at a better price, entrance stage playset at a decent size and price, arena add on's that wont take up a lot of space, etc. Hell, I'd pay $14.99 for a figure if it was packed with a ring skirt, ropes, stairs, barricade section, Raw or Smack down Stage add on, you name it.
Plus if you think about it this way, Mattel can gives us Legends in this scale but with better line ups and attire choices since the foundation has already been laid down for them. NTM the fact that they have signed more Legends since so a small legends series 1 can consist of Bret Hart, Ultimate Warrior, LOD, Camo Sarge, and Macho Man. Jakks didn't get as far with "Classic" B'nB so Mattel already has an upper hand in this department.
As far as current guys go Mattel can get away with making exact replicas of their 6 inch counterparts because these are technically different figures and people will buy them anyway. I think it would be the first time in a long time that a single series would have Cena, Orton, and Rey in it and no one would really complain (just as long these guys don't keep poping up in every series there after)
What do you guys think?
Is this just more stuff we don't need? Could it be another Flex Force situation? OR... Could this just be just the opportunity we need and a good way for Mattel to (lack of a better term) reboot without sacraficing the good work they've already done with their current lines?
