Before tonight I hadn't seen this match in years. The match was a great match from the feud standpoint. It was a great grudge match to cap off a blood feud. But the thing I've wondered is, if the title was on the line do you think Piper still would have gone over?

Probably not, considering Hogan had a strangle hold on his contract at the time, but it wouldn't have killed them to give Roddy a title run until SuperBrawl VII.

I think if Piper would've won the belt he would have gotten the Luger treatment. He probably would've won the belt then lost it the very next night.

Yeah, that would've sucked. Hell, that's not even Luger treatment, that's KANE '98 treatment! lol

man I remember when Piper turned up in WCW I was mega shocked.......and at first it was great but Piper broke one of his own rules by staying around too long.....he always kept it brief and remained fresh and popular by doing so.
but in 97 he was way past the sell by date.that cage match at HH97 was an absolute stinker boys.

That cage always bothered me. Something about it just didn't look or seem right.

I very seriously doubt Hogan would've dropped the strap. I can easily see Hogan saying he'd put over Piper in a non-title match only if he wins when Hogans title is on the line.

lol I remember WCW promoting the match like the title was on the line, but then when Piper actually won the match, it was said to be a non-title match. And the funny thing is that in storyline, it was said that Piper and his lawyers drew up the contract for the match...
Anyway even WCW wasn't that dumb to drop the title to Piper at the time. By 1996 Piper could barely walk and its saying alot when Hogan was the better of the two in the ring by then. Piper winning a non-title match was a good nastolgia moment, but having Piper actually win the title, even for only a few days, would have done more harm than good for the title and the nWo.

I think the Bischoff reveal could have worked well here with it having been a title match and Bisch changed it......

I remember thinking after the match Piper won the title and then the announcers slipping in how it wasn't for the title. I was like what the hell.

funny thing is I had always assumed it was for the title until Piper won the match.......then I was like WTF? Yeah... in WCW! They always did this type of bait and switch bullcrapto the fans. I was pissed when I found out Piper did'nt win the belt. Its a damn travesty that Piper never held the World title... It makes me sad when I see guys like The Miz, and Del Rio wearing the title nowadays. Its disgraceful. craplike this really makes me say " you Hogan" eventhough I'm (was) a major mark for him.

lol but having Piper actually win the title, even for only a few days, would have done more harm than good for the title and the nWo. I disagree bud. What made the nWo becoming stale and watered down other than letting too many guys in and nWo run-ins on every single match was the fact that was that the nWo was too dominate. Nobody other than Sting really ever got the best of them! Even when Sting finally beat Hogan, he was champ for all of 2 seconds. He dropped the Title like a month or so later. Piper winning the WCW Title would have done more to solidify Pipers legacy than it would have done harm to that title. What killed the damn thing was David "I have no business in a wrestling ring" Arquette winning it! Haha!

I agree...i remember Savage doing that insane jump from the top of the cage, totally ****ed up his knees. I remember they were calling it the "greatest cage match ever" on Nitro...and it was funny when Cornette was "shootin" on that match on RAW..."Hogan you are be a household name, but so is garbage...and it stinks too when its old"....classic!

What killed the damn thing was David "I have no business in a wrestling ring" Arquette winning it! Haha! Had Piper won the title BUD, that would have had ill effects on the Sting feud. Yes, the nWo was watered down from too many guys and not many epople getting over them, but remember, Starrcade 96 was when the nWo was still only about 6 months old. How would it have looked if a guy who could barely walk and years past his prime have taken the title from the still fresh and dominating nWo? Nobody would have cared if String had done it a year later because a guy way older than him would have done it a year before him. And it doesn't matter that WCW completly f***ed things up after Sting won the title. The fact is that the buildup led to WCW's biggest buy rate ever and had Piper actually taken the title, it would have most likely have had negative effects on the Sting/nWo build up. It was great to see the underdog Piper get a win over Hogan, but to actually take the title would have been a dumb move. Luger was already chasing the title as well from Hogan so no need for Piper to get in the way of Sting and Luger.
