I'm relatively new to Jakks, I had several TTL figures when I was a kid, but I missed the Ruthless Era completely, both the toys and the television program (for the most part, anyway, I would watch from time to time). So I guess I'm just wondering if anybody else here is a newbie to Jakks, and what has brought you here?
Me personally? I'm a huge Mattel fan, but I have almost everything I want from that line, so it'll just be whatever is new with them. I really like TNA, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, so of course I have a lot of Jakks TNA Deluxe figures, but again, I'm fairly comfortable with my collection of TNA figures. What has brought me to Jakks older WWE ruthless and Deluxe and Maximum Aggression figures is my desire to collect rookie figures and one-offs and mid-carders and such. I realize that there are a lot of wrestlers that will never get a Mattel treatment, and possibly another toy ever.
I also love Jakk's headscans. Mattel does nice work, and I dig a lot of the stylized sculpts that they do. I think the more stylized they go the stronger they get, for instance the new Miz headscan is tremendous. But when they try for realism they fall flat compared to Jakks. Jakks, hands down, has the best wrestling scans on the market. And they have a lot of them. And I've been catching up with DVD's and Youtube on the greatest matches of the last ten years, and it's nice to have figures of Triple H, for instance, in his prime.
Jakks had some cool accessories as well, and I appreciate how many belts I have so far with Jakks. The truth is that this is not a race, not everything in the world has to be the best to be enjoyed. My favorite band? King Crimson. Does that mean that I can't enjoy other bands that aren't as skilled as them? No. I apply that same logic to Jakks. They have some unique things that make them better than Mattel, and despite their flaws they still look cool as hell on my shelf. And I really get a kick out of putting them side by side with Mattel versions of the same wrestlers to see how different two companies approach the same project. When it comes down to it, I prefer every Jakks John Morrison scan to Mattel, although the last Mattel scan was pretty awesome.
Jakks, I for one appreciate your work, I know that a lot of people come on here to bash them, and I know that they might not be where they were 5 years ago in terms of quality and productivity, but I wish them nothing but luck. They have a difficult path to follow and a smaller fanbase now, both with the TNA crowd and Jakks loyalists, but I really wish the TNA toy line could continue for many years to come. Expect me to be purchasing everything from DI7. You can complain all you want about them being repaints, and it won't matter to me. I will buy them all because at least they are very good looking repaints that are a whole lot more up to date than what they've been doing in that line. And if you buy them, who knows? Maybe they'll be able to truck on and make rookies and up to date versions of our favorites and continue the license past this year.
