Before you start..no this isnt a big sing song about whether or not vince hates bret hart etc etc thats old news. I always felt that maybe Bret thought the wrestling was more important to the show rather than the entertainment aspect of storylines and promos which is what Vince really cares about. Dont get me wrong im sure Vince appreciates a good wrestling match but Bret was never an entertainer in the same mold as some of the other main event guys. Do you think there's any truth in that? Bret was like the older guys mind set of a good wrestling match makes the show where as Vince had the vision of what WWE is now and he probably felt Bret was never going to be part of that vision. HBK admitted it to his face in the rivalries dvd between the pair, Shawn mentioned along the lines that Bret was like the old dinosaurs of the 80s and needed to be shifted aside for a newer "mindset" of wrestlers. I dont think im explaining as best i can but hopefully you can understand what im trying to get at.

Honestly, I could see that. Bret didn't have much charisma (although he did have the look). He just went out there and did a hell of a job in the ring. His in-ring work spoke for itself but maybe that wasn't enough for Vince.

Hart won the title what like 5 times before the screw job and was being paid a ridiculously huge salary and a contract that was suppose to last like15 years. He was suppose to go directly to creative/managment after he retired.........I would say Vince was a pretty big fan up until the event of the screw job.

Well in terms of the contract Vince changed his mind on that before the screw job. Bret says so in his book which is why he was planning on leaving to go to WCW.

Thats true, but the whole reworking the contract and letting him leave for more at WCW was not to long before the screw job happened

Where is the source on Vince hating Bret? I've never heard that.
If Vince hated Bret, he would never have put the belt on him...kept him as champ when houses dropped, and brought him back, induct him in the hall, do a couple of DVD's, live mic time.....

I think Vince has a lot of respect for Hart. If he didn't, then Bret would had never gotten the title back in 92. A lot happened between them, but I think Vince always like Bret and felt that a company could be built around him. Certain he has stated that before, and was very critical of what WCW did to him.

I don't think it's fair to say "never." I think Vince was a huge Bret Hart fan until he decided that the future of the business was down a path that Bret couldn't lead him on.

I may be wrong but I always heard that Vince said Bret was one guy you could build your company around and that the fact that WCW didn't utilize him right was downright stupid.

My only problem was how it seemed Bret was being knocked from his spot for guys like Luger, Diesel, and Michaels, yet Bret always rose to the top in the end.

Bret has spoken many times about having a very good, close relationship with Vince, even viewing him as a father figure many times. So I'm sure they had a really good relationship for a long time, especially during most of Brets main event run.
However, Bret does not fit the typical mold of what Vince prefers, I'm sure. Vince has always been more "entertainment" minded and not as much for the pure, technical wrestling style. Bret basically was anti-what Vince wanted, but just wrestled his ass off to become a main eventer.

Bret was the total package. For anyone who says he doesn't have charisma or any mic skills. They didn't watch him in 97.
The reason Vince kept trying other people is because of Bret's size. It's as simple as that. Vince loves the hugely tall, overly muscular men. That's why he tried Lex Luger, and that's why he tried Diesel.

^ anvil nails it. bret wasn't disliked, it's just big guys WERE liked. essentially only bret hart and shawn michaels made it to the top despite their size for the time.

Yeah, but I think there is something to be said for Bret feeling like he was just keeping the title warm for Shawn leading into WrestleMania 12. The whole Hogan WrestleMania 9 thing was an indication of Vince not viewing Bret as his stereotypical top guy, same with Diesel. Bret makes it sound like he never felt like Vince trusted him at the top. However, he did get his run in 1994 when it could have been Lex, Razor, or even Taker of the bigger guys. I get what the OP is saying and just based off of what Bret himself has said, I tend to agree with it on some level. I don't think anyone is questioning their personal relationship though. I think up until the screwjob that Vince and Bret were like family.

Vince was always looking for "bigger and better" instead of just being satisfied with Bret as his #1 guy.

Vince wasn't content with Bret. He tried on several occasions to replace Bret with a bigger star. But one by one they failed to get as over as Bret. So Vince kept going back to his workhorse.

I've seen a recent shoot YouTube video with Bret where he pretty much says what Anvil Fan says. Bret was always the goto guy when Vince needed someone to carry the belt for awhile until he found the next big guy/Hulk Hogan...
