I'm working on an essay. About...well it's irrelevant. It has to do with passion.
My question to you all, mainly NFL fans, but NHL and NBA fans are invited to answer.
Does anyone just watch their favorite sport without playing fantasy leagues? Do you watchm ultiple games to enjoy being entertained by them, or do you simply read highlights and hope your favorite player this week did well?
As well, do you think as big as fantasy leagues have become, they've ruined the passion of watching and rooting for sports teams in general?
Woot.

It all depends on who you watch with, honestly. Personally, I do play Fantasy Football and have off and on since 08. But that being said, I still find myself watching pretty much all Sunday and rooting for one team or another. The league portion of it is a fun factor, in my opinion, and is something I keep in the back of my mind.
I see a news scroll at the bottom of someone on my team doing well or bad, sure I read it. But I do watch the games, simply to watch the games.

I absolutely LOVE fantasy football. Every Sunday and Monday night I am now more excited for the NFL than I have ever been before and that is because of fantasy football. The only thing fantasy football has done for me is make me an even bigger fan of the game and of the NFL. I now actually care about a game like Cleveland vs. Jacksonville whereas before fantasy football I wouldn't have given a game like that the time of day. My love for fantasy football, however, doesn't even come close to my love for the Chicago Bears. Give me a Super Bowl championship any ing day of the week over a stupid ass fantasy championship.

I played fantasy football with the English Premier League for a couple of years. It did broaden my interest in other teams and players but ultimately it was killing my enjoyment. I was always thinking about what kind of points I was aiming for and if I had players from a rival team I was conflicted cos I needed the points but wanted that team to lose. If I was watching a live game I'd be focussed on my players and couldn't really just relax and watch. So now I've stopped playing fantasy football.
I don't know if I ever will play it with NFL but for now I just like to watch as many games as I can because I love the sport and it'll help me to know what the other teams are like. At the moment I'm watching 4 or 5 games a week and I see the rest in a highlight package during the Sunday night game.

I love fantasy football but I would watch every football game I could anyway, FF is just an added element that makes the season even more fun.

I absolutely hate Fantasy sports. While I know its not always true, when I think about people that play fantasy sports I think of those fat kids in high school who were unathletic as hell and wanted to be one of the kids that played all the sports but clearly couldnt so they did everything to memorize everything on the back of a football/baseball card to sound like they knew about the game.
Ive always wondered what the ratio was between the people that play fantasy sports and also played real sports at a decent/high level (HS, College, pro etc) and those that only could wear a band uniform.
Now as to what I watch. When it comes to football, Ill watch any kind of football on any level. Peewees, High school, College, NFL...doesnt matter. Sports that I just cant identify with like basketball and hockey, Ill pop in on them during the Finals. Baseball is a long ass sport that I watch and enjoy but it comes and goes as well. I might watch every Yankees game one season and then only watch them once a week the next.

Are you making the point that to truly love a sport, you would have had to of played it, and at a "decent level" no less, if you play fantasy sports?

No I just wondered what the correlation was between the two. Like I said, I know it isnt true but when I picture people sitting around getting all excited about their Fantasy Draft and Fantasy team, I just see a bunch of unathletic over weight people sitting around Hooters sucking down chicken wings and Mt dew. Kinda like the "arm chair QB" types.

People of all different shapes, sizes and athletic ability or lack thereof play. I know this.

But I do watch the games, simply to watch the games. I'm more or less the same way. When you start to really enjoy football, it's hard not to get wrapped up in playing the fantasy aspect for the fun of it. I do enjoy that side of things, but I try not to let it impact my enjoyment of the games that much. In the end, I watch football because I've grown to love it, not because I want player X to perform well for my fantasy team. As far as rooting goes, I have a few teams that I actively cheer for, and a few that I actively root against consistently. Though I have plenty of teams that fall in the middle, I still love watching those games as well. I'm sort of an odd case, actually. Sports is all relatively new to me. My dad has always loved football and followed the Patriots religiously, but I just never got into it. I watched a couple games with him here and there throughout the season, and of course, the Super Bowl, but that was that. In '08, during my freshman year of college, I was away from all my family and friends and I'd get incredibly bored on Sunday afternoons, so, I started watching football. By week 3 or so, I was absolutely hooked. It's been one of my favorite things to do since.

I've been playing fantasy football for 4 years now, & I think its actually increased my love for football, which I didn't think was possible. I don't think its ruined the sport by any means, but I'm sure pro athletes get tired of hearing "you're on my fantasy team, I lost in fantasy this week because of you." Etc.
Baseball is my favorite sport, but there's no way I could play in a fantasy league. The seasons are just too long. Plus the price for a package to just see majority of the daily games is way out of my price range. NFL Redzone is fantasy football's best friend. I can see all of the games on a weekly basis for $8 a month.
I too have to disagree with the "assumption" of what type of people play fantasy football. For me personally, everyone I know that plays were athletes in either high school or college (myself included). But I never assumed only athletes played fantasy games. My sister does extremely well in her fantasy hockey league but I never thought it was odd because she didn't play hockey in high school

I absolutely hate Fantasy, I never do it. Im a huge Giants fan. If Im Vsing a kid who has Seattle Defense and that week Seattle is Vsing Phili, your telling me I want Phili to run all over Seattle. Hell no screw that.
I'll watch games that either have value for my team, entertainment value or prime time games. I like different players from different teams so I may watch them.

There are fat folks who play Fantasy sports....and there are an awful lot of fat folks.... I play no fantasy sports...i watch basketball, hockey and baseball about a game each a week....more during the playoffs.

I do fantasy hockey but it's puely for fun. If it comes down to a play on my fantasy team playing against my favorite team, I'd rather him not play well and my favorite eam get a win.
Also, I love hockey and will have fun watching any 2 teams play. Hell, I'll even watch you and your firends play if I had enough beer and a buddy to talk to about it. I do think fantasy sports can get a bit ridiculous...but I just don;t hang out with the kind of people that get too into it.

Also, I subscribe to NHL Center Ice and watch on average 1.5ish NHL games per day during the season.

I don't ever play fantasy sports whatsoever. I'm an NBA guy myself and while my favorite team is the Lakers, I also enjoy watching the Celtics, Bulls, Sixers, Knicks, Mavs, Thunder, and Jazz. I try to watch as much 'ball as I can whenever I have the time as I just got into the sport in 2011 when the Mavs made their play-off run (I blame Dirk for all this lol).
I do wish that I had gotten into the sport around the same time I did wrestling though as alot of my favorite players like Magic, Worthy, Kareem, Bird, King, Stockon, and Malone were playing.
