From the second you heard the glass shatter....or you heard "oohh ohhh Shawn!", or maybe "If Ya smeeellllllll, what the rock, is cookin'!"
You KNEW someone special or a star was about to come out. Ever since the 80's a wrestlers entrance theme has been such an important part to their character & gimmick.
Undertaker....wouldn't be the same without the gong. The first few notes of "Real American"... The drums of the Ultimate Warrior... hell, the WWE turned "pomp & circumstance" into one of the coolest themes ever.
You wonder why a guy like Antonio Cesaro can't get over?? His theme song flat out SUCKS. When it hits, half the people in the arena probably don't even know who it is. The one he had before this (the instrumental) was actually REALLY good, it was catchy...memorable, and unique.
It's all about the sound, the WWE for the most part has some great themes: Rhodes, Sandow, Del Rio, Christian, Orton...to name a few.
But among those there are some REAL stinkers: Cesaro, Ted DiBiase, Jinder Mahal, Jack Swagger, Yoshi Tatsu.
Or some that could use a real good update and fresh sound: Mysterio, Kofi, Primo/Epico
Or what about Ryback? His instrumental theme was badass, it sounded like the guy coming out was going to kick the living hell out of his opponent....they they go and change it to some bootleg, generic nu-metal sounding garbage. Why not just add the "Feed Me More" at the beginning and keep the original? Tell me that would not be 100x better.
Ziggler's faster "Perfection" theme was a million times better than "Here to Show the World"....mainly due to the upbeat guitar riffs, however HSW is not a terrible theme so it still kept him relevant.
It's just a shame that we've gotten away from theme songs, and now everyone has to have some kind of song that is their theme. It works for some, but not all. Half of any wrestler's importance is based on their theme & entrance, or so it used to be.
Now again, this is all in my opinion. Music in general is debated constantly, basically due to taste. But there is one thing no one wrestling fan can really deny....the theme makes the star.
What are your thoughts on themes in general? Any you wish were replaced? Any you absolutely love? Do you prefer the instrumental "themes" as opposed to actual created songs?

I love "Cult Of Personality." That is all. Yeah, 20 years ago when it was actually controversial. The song as a theme song for a wreslter in 2012 makes zero sense.

A good theme needs to have a memorable intro. For example: Awesome!, Feed me!, Oh you didn't know? æìCé˜ü (Tensai), and Kane. Well, Kane doesn't really have one but you know he's coming when you hear the pyro.

I think a theme is important because it can boost a wrestler's confidence. I remember a Gangrel interview one time where he said Austin asked him why he liked his music and Gangrel said "I can walk to it." Austin then said that was the same reason he liked his music. An effective theme is something that gives the crowd a sense of the character.

As much as I love HBK, Sexy Boy made no sense for the latter part of his career. But the song becomes so attached to the wrestler, that you can't imagine anything else. I think that's the point that a lot of wrestlers come to, like Stone Cold or Undertaker.
I will say that most of the time, less is more. For example, Kurt Angle.
His theme is perfect. Well, was perfect. Right around when he moved to ECW, they updated his theme and had the beginning part start over 2 or 3 times, and it ruined the whole theme. It was simple, and felt very fitting to an American Hero.
Alberto Del Rio has to have the best theme song currently, in my opinion. No lyrics, nothing that strays too far from his character. Has a great beginning that blends really well with Ricardo or anyone announcing, as well as the car horn.
JBL's theme is right up there as well with those two, and for almost the exact same reasons. The Stock Market Bell at the beginning is just a great touch.
Man, I could go on for hours on how less is more.
I'm really not a big fan of theme songs with lyrics, unless it really matches in either tone or lyrics. Randy Orton's theme song could not fit more perfectly, both character and his actions. I can't say John Cena's really fits anymore, and has fallen into that "We expect him to come out to it" catagory. "You're time is up, my time is now" Who are you talking to, John? It's been your time for 7 years now.
I know I'll catch some flack for this, but best theme song of all time? 2002 Big Evil Red Devil Undertaker PRIOR to lyrics. Back when it was just a nasty guitar rift after the "Dead Man Walking". Couldn't have been more aggressive, while being simply a couple of guitars and a drum.

The point made about Kurt's theme, yes the intro was excessive, but the actual theme itself... well i actually felt his ECW was his best, felt alot more 'Olympic' to me and stopped the crowd chanting 'you suck'. That being said, the rest is perfect. Takers Themes have always been fantastic, but my least favourite have been his ABA lyriced themes... Look at Gangrel or Goldust, those themes give you the essence of the character by the way the music sounds, not by what the words of the music state... its much more impactful You imagine either of those themes with lyrics :X

I agree with theme songs being very important to a wrestler's character. I'm probably in the minority when I say that I liked Ted DiBiase's current theme, but only when he was trying to get over with the Million Dollar Man gimmick. Afetr he got drafted to Smackdown, he should have went to "It's A New Day", which fits him better.
For Yoshi Tatsu, I would like to see him use Tajiri's first theme.
Antonio Cesaro is more unique than his previous theme. It fits his current gimmick, but if he ever changes his gimmick, he should go to the theme he had in FCW/NXT.
Jinder Mahal's theme is alright, nothing I like, but for his character it fits.
My brother had a valid point with Ryback's theme when he saw that it had lyrics to it. IMO, I think the only lyrics that his theme should have had was the "Feed Me More" catchphrase at the beginning and the instrumental.

Someone needs to come back with the Heath Slater/Justin Gabriel Black or White theme.

Btw I noticed a few people mentioning Cesaro's theme. Did anyone notice that its a recycled theme? Dean Malenko used it with no lyrics during his WWE run. However, some of the best themes were recycled songs. Kurt Angle's theme originally belonged to the Patriot and the Val Venis theme originally belonged to Rick Martel.

We Are One is the best theme ever IMO.
I think theme songs are important because they get the crowd hyped up.

I agree that theme music is a big selling point. I think that's why Big Show never really got over that huge. He music is awful.
