Historic Timeline of Bad News Brown's journey to the Championship Main Event at Wrestlemania 6. In this alternate history, Vince actually keeps his promise to Bad News Brown of making him the first black Heavyweight Champion. Also, Vince decides against moving to film to spend more on WWE programming. (Note all dates are about important events and character building in the storyline).
Saturday Night's Main Event: February 16, 1989 (taped for March 11 show)
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura.
Singles Match Hulk Hogan (with Miss Elizabeth) vs Bad News Brown
The match went on as it did, Bad News famously takes the mic as Hogan grabs unto Bad News's leg and struggles to get up. Brown says "Look at your hero, look at him begging...you think I'm gonna give him mercy?" Brown goes for the Ghetto Blaster but misses. Hogan hulks up (now comes the change) as Brown continues to strike but to no avail.
Hogan turns his back on Brown as he hulks up, Brown quickly hits the Ghetto Blaster and Hulk falls on his knees. Hulk is in pain as he struggles to get up, he reaches the middle of the ring as Brown runs to the ropes and hits the Ghetto Blaster on Hogan again. Brown pins Hogan for the the three count.
Winner: Bad News Brown
The fans boo (a few start cheering too), Jesse on commentary jumps to joy "I told you so McMahon!" as Vince says "I can't believe it!" Brown celebrates in the Ring as Miss Elizabeth tends to Hogan. Hogan sits up and can't believe what had just happened.
Aftermath: Hogan is in the dressing room for an interview with Mean Gene. Hogan says he can't believe that he lost and is walking back and forth with disbelief. Miss Elizabeth is trying to calm him down. Mean Gene asks how this will affect him at Wrestlemania V against Macho Man for the WWF Championship. Hogan calms down and takes a deep breath he says "sometimes you win some and sometimes you lose some." A clip with comments from (post recorded) the Macho Man says he said he now knows Hogan's weakness and will defeat Hogan at Wrestlemania V.
Bad News Brown makes comments at video interviews during Superstars of Wrestling weekly tapings and says that he is the only man to have defeated Hulk Hogan for a clean pin fall and that he deserves a title shot against whoever the Champion will be at Wrestlemania.
Wrestlemania V: April 2nd, 1989
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
Singles Match - Bad News Brown versus Jim Duggan.
The match didn't end in a double disqualification, rather Bad News Brown wins the match via Ghetto Blaster and pinfall.
Winner: Bad News Brown
Bad News gets a mic and says that he destroyed Hulk Hogan a few weeks ago and doesn't mind if he wins. He says he wants a title shot against whoever is the champion after Wrestlemania.
Event Note: Hulk Hogan wins the WWF Championship.
Superstars of Wrestling, April 8th, 1989
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Bad News Brown is invited to the Brother Love Show. Bad News Brown says that he now deserves a title shot and being the only man who clearly pinned Hulk Hogan, should be the No. 1 Contender. Jack Tunney walks out and says that Bad News Brown has proven himself as late as a great competitor, but is not the No. 1 contender, under a "rematch clause", Macho Man Randy Savage is the current No. 1 contender. Bad News says he can beat the Macho Man.
Macho Man comes out and says he deserves a rematch against Hogan. Macho says he can beat Bad News Brown has he has before any day of the week and says that he has found a new valet and he will introduce her next week. Bad News Brown says he doesn't give a damn about Macho Man or Jack Tunney, he wants his title shot. Jack says sorry and that Bad News isn't even close to being a No. 1 contender.
Bad News gets angry, he talks about how Black Men in Wrestling never get a chance and says it is a racial issue. Jack says it has nothing to do with race. Bad News grabs a hold of Tunney's tie. Bad News says he's assaulted Tunney before and he can doing it again. Macho grabs a hold of Bad News and holds him off. Tunney says that he's had enough and Bad News is now suspended from the WWF for a month.
Aftermath: Clips from the show are shown on future Superstars shows as they follow the story closely. Bad News still wrestles on a few house shows (two after and two before his return) despite suspension.
Superstars of Wrestling, May 13th, 1989
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
During a match of Ultimate Warrior vs a jobber, Warrior defeats the jobbey quickly till Bad News Brown walks out and attacks the Warrior. He hits the Ghetto Blaster and takes a mic and says "Look at your warrior now, he's nothing but a chump." Warrior gets up but Bad News hits the Warrior with the mic and drops it. Brown walks out gaining a lot of heat from the crowd.
Superstars of Wrestling, May 20th, 1989
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Video is shown of Bad News attacking the Ultimate Warrior. During the event, Hacksaw Jim Duggan gets crowned the new King of wrestling with several wrestlers who congratulate him on his victory against King Haku a week earlier. Bad News Brown appears with a crowbar and attacks Hacksaw and several wrestlers. Knocking them all out, Brown takes the Crown and places it on his own head. He grabs the cape too and a mic and says that he was the one who defeated Duggan at Wrestlemania and that he is the true King of Wrestling.
Aftermath: Following Superstars, Tunney says that Duggan is the King of wrestling and that Bad News has to return the crown and cape.
Superstars of Wrestling, June 17th, 1989
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
President Tunney and Jim Duggan walk out to the Ring. Bad News Brown (after wearing the crown and having a few jobber matches at previous shows and house shows) comes out with the crown and cape and walks out to the Ring with Jack Tunney waiting for him to return it to Jim Duggan.
Bad News says he's the real King, he's the man who defeated Hulk Hogan so he deserves it. Tunney says if Brown doesn't return the crown and cape to King Duggan, he will be fired from the World Wrestling Federation. Bad News asks Tunney if he wants a beating.
Ultimate Warrior runs out and attacks Brown. Warrior takes the crown and cape and hands it over to Duggan. Brown walks out in anger as Duggan is the true King of wrestling.
Aftermath: Tunney announces that Ultimate Warrior will take on Bad News Brown at Saturday Night's Main event on July 29th, 1989 (actual show on July 18th).
Saturday Night's Main Event, July 18th, 1989 (taped for July 29)
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Singles Match: The Ultimate Warrior versus Bad News Brown
Bad News Brown attacks Warrior right from the start, they lock up and Warrior tosses Brown to the corner showing his strength. Brown manages to attack Warrior with judo chops and continues tacking the Warrior.
Five minutes into the match, Warrior finally gains the upperhand after hitting a leaping shoulder block from the ropes for a pin. Brown kicks out and Warrior continues to go from each corner hitting three more leaping shoulder blocks.
Warrior finally goes for the Gorilla splash as he picks up Brown over his head. Ready for the drop, Bobby Heenan distracts the referee as IC Champion Rick Rude runs in and attacks Warrior with a leadpipe. Warrior and Brown falls. Rude runs out and watches at the sidelines.
As both men try to get up, Brown hits the Ghetto Buster for the pin.
Winner: Bad News Brown
Brown realizes that Rude had something to do with it and that he wanted a clean pin fall over the warrior. Rude walks in the ring but Brown gets angry and attacks Rude and leaves the ring an angry man.
Backstage before Hogan's match against the Honky Tonk Man, Bad News is in an interview with Mean Gene and says that as much as he is angry, he still proved tonight that he is the true No. 1 contender and deserves a title shot against Hulk Hogan and says SummerSlam is the best time.
Aftermath: Hogan's after match interview after defending the title gets asked about Bad News's challenge, Hogan says he isn't afraid of Bad News but Macho Man has already asked for his first rematch at SummerSlam.
Superstars of Wrestling, August 12th, 1989
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
On the Brother Love Show, Manager Slick announces that he will be managing Bad News Brown and brings him out. Brown says he is angry at how the WWF has treated him, he says he defeated guys like Hulk Hogan, King Duggan and the Ultimate Warrior and yet no one gives him a chance. What's worse is that for SummerSlam he has been taken off the card. He says it's because he's black and that he'll still be at SummerSlam whether or not Tunney wants him there or not. Slick promises him that he'll take Brown to the top.
SummerSlam, August 28th, 1989
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
During the IC title match between Warrior and Rude, Brown runs in and attacks Rude from the outside for Warrior to capitalise and win the WWF IC Championship.
During the Duggan/Demolition versus Andre the Giant/Twin Towers match, Brown runs out (Gorilla says someone get rid of this guy) and attacks Duggan for Akeem to get the win over Duggan during the match.
After Ted Dibiase defeats Jimmy Snuka, Bad News Brown walks in and takes the mic (as Ted watches) and says Virgil needs to be a free man and says that he feels like Virgil everytime he comes to the backstage. He tells Virgil to leave with him and he does so to Ted's shock.
Tunney makes a brief statement before the main event that if Bad News Brown or any wrestler interferes in the Championship match, they will be fined and suspended indefinetly. The Championship Match is Hulk Hogan (with Elizabeth) vs. Macho Man Randy Savage (with Sherri). Bad News Brown still walks out during the match with Slick only to watch the match at ringside. Both Macho and Hogan had a chance at a cheap shot at Brown, but Slick ensured Brown wouldn't intefere. Hogan wins the match via legdrop-pinfall.
Aftermath: Tunney suspends Bad News Brown, saying that he was still a distraction. Virgil returns back to Ted Dibiase with cash handed over to him, as Ted makes a promise to help Brown take legal action against the suspension. Bad News returns in early October on a Superstars of Wrestling show thanks to the Million Dollar Man who paid hefty lawyers. Ted says for Bad News to return the deal (no one really knows what the deal was) as Bad News laughs and attacks Ted Dibiase and says he's not for sale. Virgil leaves with Bad News and Slick as a new bodyguard.
Saturday Night's Main Event, September 21st, 1989 (taped for October 14th)
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Singles Match: Bad News Brown vs. Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase
Bad News locks up, Ted counters and hits standing clothesline and an elbow drop twice. Ted goes for the figure four leglock early on as Bad News counters and goes to the ropes for the break. Ted runs to the ropes as Brown hits a spinebuster. Brown tosses Ted out of the ring and distracts the referee. Slick grabs a hold of Ted and Virgil takes a cheap shot at Ted and tosses him back in the ring.
Bad News hits a suplex and powerslam for a pin at two. Brown goes to the ropes for Ted to counter with a back elbow smash. Brown goes down as Ted goes behind him for the Million Dollar Dream. Brown is fainting, referee arm counts to two till Brown is able to get back on his feet and hits a massive clothesline. Ted gets up on his feet as Brown runs to the ropes for the Ghetto Blaster and the pin for the win.
Winner: Bad News Brown.
King of the Ring, October 14th, 1989 (historically untelevised)
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Taped and shown (as highlights with commentary) on following week WWF Prime Time Wrestling with hosts Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Pipper and Bobby Heenan with special guest Slick.
16 Competitors go one on one to be crowned King of the Ring.

Bad News Brown is crowned King of the Ring at the end of the event with Slick and Virgil by his side. Duggan gives the crown and cape to Bad News as he had too do so (due to an "injury" he had to give up his title). Bad News says he doesn't need a crown anymore and throws it out at ringside. He says the only thing he wants is a title shot against Hulk Hogan.
Superstars of Wrestling, November 4th, 1989

Bad News Brown, Slick and Virgil make it out on the Brother Love Show. Bad News says he wants Hogan to come out as he wants to challenge the man face to face for the title. Hogan walks out to a big pop with the Demolition by his side. Hogan says he'll give him a title shot, but before they go at it, it's time they meet at Survivor Series. He tells Brown to bring his own team and Hogan will bring his. Brown accepts.
Survivor Series, November 23rd, 1989

Order of Elimination: Ax, Smash, Jim Duggan, Big Boss Man, Powers of Pain (Slick and Virgil were kicked out as managers) and Jimmy Snuka.
Bad News Brown and Hulk Hogan were all that was left till Hogan managed to toss Brown out of the ring and smashes him to the steel steps. Hogan walks in for the countout win. Hogan and Elizabeth celebrate in the middle of the ring.
Winner: Team Hulkamaniacs and survivor Hulk Hogan
Bad News is furious and attacks two referees as he leaves the ring. Backstage Bad News Brown and Slick with Virgil make there way to Mean Gene for a locker room interview. Bad News Brown starts to destroy everything in his path including throwing down lockers/bins and punching a hole in one locker. Slick is trying to calm him down. Brown says he can't calm down, he says he can't believe he lost to Hulk Hogan. Slick says that it was just the Survivor Series and says not to worry because in a World Title match this wouldn't happen. Brown says he wants his title shot, no more games, no more survivor series, no more tag teams just Brown versus Hogan for the WWF Championship.
Saturday Night's Main Event, January 3rd 1990 (taped for Jan 27)
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
On the Brother Love Show (in the middle of the ring this time), Bad News Brown comes out with Slick and Virgil, he says he now wants Tunney to come out and give him his contract to face Hulk Hogan. Tunney walks out in the middle of the ring with two security guards. Tunney says that he won't give Brown a title shot because he has shown poor performance and behaviour in the last year and attacked two officials at the Survivor Series.
Brown threatens that he will attack Tunney, Slick holds him back. Slick speaks up and says his man will have his title shot. Tunney says no way. Brown says he was right all along, that Tunney's been getting favours from Miss Elizabeth all this time. Tunney says he's had it and walks away. Brown says Tunney will be very sorry by the end of the night.
During the Main Event, Hulk Hogan took on Mr. Perfect for the WWF Championship. After Hogan hits the legdrop for the win, Bad News walks out with a sledgehammer and swings at Hogan who moves out of the way to protect Elizabeth. They both leave the Ring as the WWF belt is on the mat. Brown takes the belt, places it in the middle of the ring and smashes it hard. The belt breaks apart as Hogan can't believe what just happened. Miss Elizabeth convinces Hogan to just walk away as they exchange words for the end of the night.
Royal Rumble, January 21st 1990
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
Bad News Brown is banned from the Royal Rumble battle royal and fined for breaking the WWF Championship belt. As Hulk Hogan wins the Royal Rumble after tossing out Mr. Perfect, Bad News walks out with the Powers of Pain and Virgil who assault Hogan. Miss Elizabeth is on the outside screaming for help. Bad News watches from the outside as Miss Elizabeth begs Bad News to stop. Bad News smiles and strikes her in the face (away from the camera, behind Elizabeth so it's not shown on TV directly).
Bad News gains the biggest heat of his career from the crowd, they throw objects at him as he enters the ring and attacks Hulk Hogan till several Royal Rumble participants finally enter the ring to stop him. Hogan starts to hulk up and wants to attack Brown as wrestlers hold him down. More wrestlers and officials run into the ring to try to stop the two. When Brown leaves Hogan watches to the horrors of seeing Miss Elizabeth on the outside, layin on the floor unconcious. Hogan is in tears as he cries out for help as a stretcher takes her in the back.
Aftermath: Picked up much media attention from the attack.
Superstars of Wrestling, February 10th, 1990
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
A special Piper's Pit makes a return featuring Hulk Hogan as its guest. Piper talks about Miss Elizabeth who has been resting at home since the vicious attack. Hogan comes out red in anger, he talks about Bad News who has been on his back for almost a year, he says that he's asked Jack Tunney not to fire or suspend Brown. He says he wants to dedicate his matches to Miss Elizabeth.
Piper asks Hogan if he will face Brown at Wrestlemania, Hogan screams out "yes!". He says he wants to see if it was just a fluke last year that Brown beat him. He wants to see how far Brown is willing to go to take the gold (the same design but new belt is with him). Slick walks out and tells Hogan to sign a contract. Hogan agrees it will be done on next week's Superstars.
Superstars of Wrestling, February 17th, 1990
Announcers: Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura
Piper's Pit is being done in the middle of the ring at the end of the show. Tunney walks out and sits at a chair. Piper talks about the two men, Hogan and Brown and there past confrontations. He asks for Brown out. Bad News Brown walks out with Slick, Virgil and Rick Martel (who has a large object with him). Brown says he's been waiting a year for this, he says that he's beaten Hogan before, he's beat guys like the Ultimate Warrior. He says no one has been able to pin him or make him submit. He also says that he publically apologizes for hitting Elizabeth, but if he would do it again at the time, he would have. Hogan walks out to much pop. Hogan says enough talking and just sign the damn contract. They both sit face to face.
Slick says he wants a special stipulation, that the match won't be just a regular match, that it is a match that must have a winner. No countout and no disqualification. Tunney makes a comment on the contract, signs it and Hogan agrees with a nod. Hogan finally signs the contract and Bad News signs it as well. Hogan and Brown get up, throwing the table aside for a staredown.
Hogan attacks Brown with a big fist nearly knocking him out as Martel walks infront of Hogan and sprays him with his object. Slick calls it "Arrogance" and they laugh away. Brown beats on Hogan repeatedly as Tunney calls for an end of it.
Aftermath: Bad News Brown makes an appearance on Arsenio Hall's late night show talking about his match and how he'll be the first african-american Heavyweight Champion of the world to much cheers. He says this match is for everyone. Arsenio asks about his attack on the lovely Elizabeth, Brown says his mother taught him never to hit a woman, but she is no woman and that she's a snake and always has been. He gets boos, but says he was forced into it and would apologize for his actions, though he says women have no businesss at ringside. Arsenio cracks a joke that makes Bad News angry as Arsenio calls for security. Bad News says he won't need security because he's saving it all for Wrestlemania.
Wrestlemania 6 Press Conference is held and Bad News makes a quick appearance pushing and shoving WWF officials including Jack Tunney. He makes a quick announcement that no one will stop him and he wants Hogan at Wrestlemania. He says this is for the black man and he will be champion. Hogan walks out to much cheers as Bad News sits and watches Hogan making a speech of his own. Bad News laughs it off and leaves with Slick and Virgil by his side.
Wrestlemania 6, April 1st 1990
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
Hogan Promo: Says that he can't wait to get his hands on Brown tonight. Dedicates the match to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth at home interview (from a celebrity news anchor): Her black eye is gone and broken nose is good and she is better now (though not perfect as shown visibly) She is asked about her career and past relationships, she says she supports Hulk Hogan and is sorry she couldn't be there. Asked whether women should be managers, she said absolutely and that she will return as a valet one day.
Brown Promo: Says he won't need Slick or Virgil tonight, they start to argue with him, but he says no. He has to do this alone. He has to prove to the world that he could do it. That he could pin or make Hogan submit. Slick and Virgil are in shock.
Hulk Hogan (Champion) versus Bad News Brown for the WWF Championship
Bad News Brown enters the arena without Slick and Virgil to a mixed reaction, as he tries to get on the "ring-train-platform" they deny his entry and he pushes and shoves them aside and walks to the ring. Hogan makes his entrance on the ring platform and enters the ring with the belt. Brown and Hogan are face to face. Hogan attacks Brown and over powers him. They lock up and Hogan proves that he has the upperhand in strength.
Five minutes into the match and Brown has taken a beating from Hogan. Brown tries to fight it off and uses a bit of judo moves on Hogan rather than wrestling (which looks new to fans). Hogan now takes the beatings from Brown.
Ten minutes in to the match and Brown has been using objects from ringside including a steel chair on Hogan. Brown even uses nunchuks he found under the ring, but Hogan was able to block and throw it out of the ring.
Fifteen minutes into the match and Hogan gets the upper hand by repeatedly striking Brown with a steel chair till Brown is tossed out of the ring. Brown is a bloody mess. Hogan is out of the ring and as he tries to grab another chair, Brown uses a brassknuckle from his tights and knocks out Hogan. Hogan starts to bleed.
Twenty minutes into the match and Brown finally hits a Ghetto Blaster. Going for the pin, Hogan kicks out at two and hulks up. Brown struggles to take Hogan down, but to no avail. Hogan gives the three punch, tosses Brown to the ring fast but Brown actually ends up falling out of the ring. Hogan starts to say no way and grabs a hold of Brown and tosses him back into the ring. Hogan gives a body slam on Brown and goes for the leg drop. Brown quickly gets up and gives Hogan a spinebuster.
Both men are on the mat. The referee can't count and waits. Hogan starts to get up, and starts to Hulk up again, Brown is up and Hogan strikes Brown with a running kick to the face. Hogan hits the leg drop for the pin. Brown has his shoulder up at two as Hogan is in utter shock. The crowd actually start to cheer as no one can believe it. Gorilla Monsoon is in shock and doesn't say anything. Jesse says "I can't believe it! No one has kicked out of that before!"
Hogan goes for the nunchuk out of the ring, Brown tries to get up, Hogan tries to use the nunchuk till Brown quickly counters and hits a Ghetto Blaster. Hogan is on his knees, bleeding and in immense pain. Brown screams to Hogan to get up. Hogan does as Brown goes to the ropes and hits the running Ghetto Blaster. He pins Hogan for the three.
Winner: Bad News Brown and new WWF Heavyweight Champion.
He actually gets more pop this time around, though many boo him as well. Bad News is given the title by the referee as Slick and Virgil make there way to the ring to celebrate. Virgil places the belt around Bad News as several heels and a few faces make there way to the ring to congratulate him.
Aftermath: Backstage interview with Hulk Hogan who says he plans to "retire". On a Superstars show, Brown publicly apologizes to Elizabeth, though he says he doesn't want to ever see her again. Vince starts planning for the Ultimate Warrior to be the new face of the WWF after Hulk Hogan.
